9th Annual Conference:
Celebrating NPEA's 10th Anniversary in 2017: NPEA is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! As we reflect on our 10-year history, we want to thank each one of you for your participation in and contributions to the critical work of supporting underrepresented students on the path to and through college. We are tremendously grateful you are a part of the NPEA community, and we applaud the work you have done over the past decade to make a difference in the lives of the students you serve. We invite members to submit a brief testimonial about your work with NPEA over the years and look forward to sharing your reflections and stories on our website, through social media, and at our 2017 Annual Conference.
Thank you for all you do in the field of educational access and success. We are excited to continue our work with you.
Warmly,
The NPEA Team

Educational access work in the words of NPEA members.
The February 2017 NPEA Member Spotlight features Give Something Back (
Give Back).
"If I had to give advice, it would be that as a new chapter of an educational focused organization, we have learned so much from others in the field. There are groups out there who have best practices and we realized quickly that we can model our programs from them - rather than having to reinvent the wheel. They have pointed us in the right direction, and to the right people. Networking has been essential for us and we have learned to not be afraid to ask for help...This field is a community of people that really wants to help each other, because ultimately the need is so great and we all have the same end goal."
- Kathleen O'Connor
Deputy Director, Mid-Atlantic Chapter

"In music, you have scales. In Jiu Jitsu, it's drilling. Most of us just call it practice. Whatever you label it, many believe that greatness, heck even mere competency, requires training a skill well past proficiency. It's continuing to practice your free throw even after you've nailed every shot. It's playing through that song one more time even though you've made no mistakes.
Scientists call this training past the point of improvement 'overlearning.' And a recent study in
Nature Neuroscience suggests that it might improve performance by altering chemicals in the brain that 'lock in training.'"
