I hope this note finds you well. I am happy to report to you that our new communications director has arrived! She has a tremendous story -- moving here on the coldest, stormiest days of our winter-- to realize her dream of living here in New England! Meet Director of Communications and Grants: Cassie Chance:
|
|
Natick Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Anna Nolin has announced the hiring of Cassie Chance as the district’s director of communications. Chance began her duties on January 18 and oversees communications and media relations, including implementation and evaluation of communications programs, community engagement, crisis management, social media, and internal communications.
“We are excited to have Cassie working with us,” Nolin said. “She brings a wealth of experience that will benefit the district in multiple ways. Her work in social media and digital marketing, as well as working with highly diverse and complex organizations, brings a fresh perspective to Natick Public Schools.”
Before joining NPS, Chance served as the marketing and social media manager for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and vice president of communications for the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority, Oklahoma’s only Public Broadcasting Service network. Her former roles also include advising the state of Oklahoma’s tourism office in public relations and serving as the lead media contact for two professional sports franchises and NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics programs at the University of Oklahoma and Mississippi State University.
“I’m excited to join Natick Public Schools and look forward to continuing to move our mission forward in serving our students, staff, and community,” Chance said.
Chance earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication from Mississippi State University.

Her commitment to innovation, resilience and storytelling make her a perfect fit for our small but mighty team!
Thank you to those of you who wrote to me last week with encouragement for our staff as we get through this surge time period. The notes and consideration mean more than you know. If you have it in you to write to our staff and let them know of their impact on your child(ren), it is gold to us all.
Strengthening the District
I wanted to let you know that the district will be hiring two grant funded positions in the near future: Director of Social Emotional Learning and Equity, and Coordinator of Safety and Security. Both positions are aligned with our strategic plan and we have been seeking grant funding for both for some time. Both grants have come to fruition this year. We are looking to diversify our staff and in the coming weeks as the job postings come out, I ask you to send the opportunities to your networks--you, the Natick community--know what is needed for our community and might find us that just right match. The Director of Safety and Security position will work on our safety technology (cameras, etc.) work on safety drills and planning and conduct security audits for all of our facilities. The position will be shared with our town partners; Police Chief Hicks and I will be working on this together. In current times, someone to coordinate our safety work across town and with state and federal agencies is a vital part of our town planning and collaboration efforts. I am excited to welcome these roles to our team.
Other Budget Updates
On Monday, I will also present my DRAFT early recommendations for our FY 23 budget in addition to the detailed presentation of the technology and transportation budget.
Nothing is so constant as change......COVID version 5.0
At our School Committee meeting Monday, I will be sharing the new COVID testing program from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
At Home: The new testing program allows families and staff to receive weekly antigen testing distributed at school for your use with your child(ren) and for staff to use on themselves. The expectation is for weekly testing.
At School: Our nurses will continue to provide symptomatic testing should your child or staff become ill at school. Staff will come to antigen drive through if they feel they may have to miss work.
Antigen At-Home Tests --Want one per week? Sign up here!
Please fill out this OPT in sign up form if you would like your child to receive the tests, which will be distributed through school every two weeks. You should fill this form out for each child you have in the school system. Any student, vaccinated or unvaccinated is eligible for this type of testing. Unvaccinated students who are required to test in order to participate in extracurricular activities will need to continue to test in the manner arranged for them already but may add this antigen testing as well.
The test kit you will receive is this kit: DESE Provided Antigen Kits. Information on the test, how to test, etc. are included in the link above.
Please join us for our Monday School Committee meeting to hear the complete overview of the COVID safety program revisions and updates. The meeting is taped and can be found on Pegaus TV should you miss it live.

UPDATE for Sports Team and Spectators and Arts/Concert Attendees
1/21/22
|
Sports Spectators
In alignment with many schools of the Bay State Conference, Natick High School and Middle School Athletics has extended the following protocols for all games/contests until Sunday, January 23, 2022. These guidelines will be reevaluated with the hope to return to full capacity and pre January 1, 2022 protocols at our athletic contests.
This is a proactive measure to limit the scope of the latest COVID-19 surge. We are doing this for many reasons but ultimately this is aimed at giving our teams the best opportunity to continue to participate and to keep everyone safe. As a community, we will support and comply with this measure in full.
For all games considered home games/contests hosted by Natick up until Sunday, January 23, 2022, we will follow these new guidelines:
-limiting spectators to 2 adult guests per player for both home/away teams
-visiting teams will be arriving dressed to play with no locker room availability
-live streaming games at as many levels as our teams/Natick Pegasus can handle
Arts/ Honors Recitals
None pending this week

Weekly COVID Case Dashboard
|
POOLED TESTING UPDATES:
Please note: of the 51 pools here, only 16 cases were detected. Some were new cases of COVID, some recent or passed.
Johnson: 1
Brown: 8
BenHem: 8
Memorial: 3
Lilja: 4
Wilson: 7
Kennedy: 10
Preschool: 1
State Changes to COVID protocols are here:
Also, given the huge surge in cases in our region, state and town, the Department of Education has asked us to treat any student as if they are a close contact.
To the best of our ability, we will notify parents of close contacts, in keeping with DESE expectations. As of November 30th, the state contact tracing unit CTC closed and no support from the state has been given to municipalities or schools. In the surge, both boards of health and schools are now overwhelmed by cases and cannot definitively track close contacts. You will see that for some schools, the sheer number of cases means that close contacts cannot be determined. Many students contracted COVID over the break and have been tested at school and been found positive. We tested over 500 students this past week. We expect a similar surge week this week.
If your child has symptoms, do not send them to school, call your physician and the school nurse to strategize on next steps.

Chart Terminology:
CC's = Close Contacts
Reading Note:
CC does not mean that these students are in quarantine. Depending on the circumstances, masking and vaccination status, location. As a reminder, direct contact from school nurses and principals occur if a person is a close contact. We share the close contact information and remind everyone that vaccination helps to avoid needing to quarantine should a close contact occur.
The following close contacts are exempt from testing and quarantine response protocols:
-
Asymptomatic, fully vaccinated close contacts: Individuals who are asymptomatic and fully vaccinated are exempt from testing and quarantine response protocols.
-
Classroom close contacts: An individual who is exposed to a COVID-19 positive individual in the classroom while both individuals were masked, so long as the individuals were spaced at least 3 feet apart, is exempt from testing and quarantine response protocols.
-
Bus close contacts: Individuals on buses must be masked according to federal requirements. As such, individuals who are masked on buses when windows are open are exempt from testing and quarantine response protocols.
-
Close contacts who have had COVID-19 within the past 90 days: An individual who has been previously diagnosed with COVID-19 and then becomes a close contact of someone with COVID-19 is exempt from testing and quarantine response protocols if:
- The exposure occurred within 90 days of the onset of their own illness AND
- The exposed individual is recovered and remains without COVID-19 symptoms.

Included in this link are all the updated DPH and DESE COVID Response Protocols (link) --updated this week. However, due to the surge of cases across the Commonwealth, DESE and our Department of Public Health has been informed that we cannot contact trace. To this end, any student in a class with an infected student or pool has been notified of being a possible close contact. We do feel, at this time, however, that everyone should act as if they
PLEASE NOTE: Our school nurses are here to serve students and their medical needs. Please do not call school seeking advice if you or your family are sick or quarantined, traveling or testing. If our nurses contact you, it will be about contact tracing within school and outcomes of our testing programs in school.
Our school nurses are NOT contact tracers or advisors for the Natick Department of Public Health like they were last year. If your child is a close contact and eligible for any symptom or test and stay testing you will be notified directly. All other calls should go to your Dr. or department of public health relative to your community based COVID cases.
