Dr. Joan Walker Pivots from NRG NCORP Leadership Role to Focus on Mentorship

Joan Walker, MD, PhD recently announced that she will be stepping down from her position as Co-Principal Investigator (PI) of the NRG Oncology National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Research Base. Moving forward, she will be focusing her NRG Oncology efforts on the group’s mentorship activities as well as improving diversity and eliminating disparities in clinical research.

Dr. Lisa Kachnic Named NRG Oncology NCORP Co-Principal Investigator

Lisa Kachnic, MD, FASTRO, will be transitioning to the role of NRG Oncology (NRG) National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) Co-Principal Investigator (PI) effective immediately. Dr. Kachnic formerly served as the NRG NCORP Deputy PI and the NRG Cancer Prevention & Control Committee Chair. She will be replacing Dr. Walker, who recently stepped down as NRG NCORP PI to pursue a deeper involvement in the group’s health equity and mentorship activities. Dr. Kachnic has been a part of the NRG NCORP leadership since the inception of NRG Oncology in 2014.

Legacy Tribute: In Honor of Felix Feng, MD

NRG Oncology and the RTOG Foundation mourns the loss of profound genitourinary cancer research leader, Dr. Felix Feng. Former NRG Oncology Genitourinary Cancer Committee Chair and RTOG Foundation member, Dr. Feng passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

 

After years of dedicated and enthusiastic commitment to the NRG and previously the RTOG Genitourinary Cancer Committee, chairing or co-chairing 13 research protocols for NRG and RTOG, Dr. Feng was appointed Committee Chair in March 2018 following in the footsteps of Dr. Howard Sandler his mentor. Dr. Feng was also a member of the RTOG Foundation Board of Directors.

NRG Oncology has issued a chart of new protocols under development. These protocols will include the study’s disease site, title, Principal Investigator, and any comments pertaining to the study’s anticipated activation.

Testing Proton Craniospinal Radiation Therapy for Patients with Brest or Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Leptomeningeal Metastasis (NRG-BN014)

The NRG-BN014 clinical trial, also known as the “RADIATE-LM” study, is designed to compare proton craniospinal radiation therapy (pCSI) versus involved-field radiation therapy (IFRT) for patients with breast cancer or non-small cell lung cancer leptomeningeal metastasis (LM). This trial activated to patient enrollment in November 2025.

FORTE Site Calls

The last FORTE Site Call was on November 13, where guest speaker, Lisa Beaverson from the NRG Oncology Biopathology Center reviewed stool collection for NRG-CC005. This included detailed steps for site staff to prepare kits for enrolled participants along with instructions for participants. Lisa also reviewed stool collection data throughout 2024, including reasons that specimens have been deemed inadequate this year. Incorrect labeling was the number one reason specimens were deemed inadequate in 2024, with missing information including participant ID, bank ID, protocol number, biospecimen code, and collection date...

PRESS RELEASE: Adjuvant Tamoxifen May Reduce Recurrence Risk for Patients with ‘Good-risk’ DCIS Who Forgo Radiation

For patients with “good-risk” ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) who underwent breast-conserving surgery and did not receive radiotherapy, tamoxifen significantly decreased the risk of recurrence in the same breast, according to results presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), held December 10-13, 2024.

AACR Special Conference in Cancer Research: Translating Targeted Therapies in Combination with Radiotherapy

 

The AACR Special Conference Meeting will be held January 26-29, 2025 in San Deigo. This is the first meeting focusing on radiation and targeted therapy. The program has many oral and poster presentation opportunities from proffered abstracts in addition to presentations from experts in the field. Congratulations to Ana Stephens

Ana Stephens, Scientific Publications & Graphics Assistant at the NRG Oncology Operations Office in Pittsburgh, was awarded 1st Place and the People’s Choice award for her Lake Tahoe-themed Gingerbread House during the annual Nova Place Tenant Gingerbread House contest. The Pittsburgh NRG Biospecimen Bank staff’s entry earned 3rd place. Congratulations to all!
