NRMN Collaboration with BUILDs
Request for Virtual Mentors

BUILD Virtual Summer Research Experience.

Due to the current pandemic and the closures of research laboratories to the NIH BUILD trainees, several of the BUILD program sites have collaborated to develop a summer research alliance. This summer the alliance will be comprised of five of the ten BUILD sites and will offer two research options for the participating trainees. In an effort to assist with the small group nature of the research options, we would like to involve more researchers in our effort. Please review the research options below and inform us of your interest.

Translation is the process of turning observations in the laboratory, clinic and community into interventions that improve the health of individuals and the public — from diagnostics and therapeutics to medical procedures and behavioral changes.
Translational Science is an emerging field that seeks to identify broadly generalizable scientific and operational principles for translational research. Translational science examines translational research from a systems perspective to develop approaches that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of translational research endeavors, broadly.
In this course , students will learn key principles of translational science, taught by way of a case study of a highly successful translational research partnership involving NCATS, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Northwestern University and the University of Kansas. The partnership produced a promising potential drug shown to inhibit metastasis in animal models, which is being examined in a first-in-human clinical trial in 2020.
NRMN in the Community
The UI Journal Presents: The Use and Impact of NIH-fueled Resources for Mentoring— Reports from the Field
In August 2019, the Special Issue editors elicited our interest in publishing a series of papers from the NIH Diversity Consortium. Specifically, the papers would report results from the implementation of various research mentor and/or mentee training interventions at BUILD (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity) institutions using resources from the first phase of NRMN (National Research Mentoring Network).

We are very pleased to present this Special Issue, The Use and Impact of NIH-fueled Resources for Mentoring— Reports from the Field, consisting of seven papers plus an Introduction from NIGMS and an Overview by the Special Issue editors. We believe this collection reflects state-of-the-art lessons for the UI community. We also welcome suggestions of topics for other special issues.
