Remembering
Dr. Steven P. Wallace

Along with our Diversity Program Consortium (DPC) community, NRMN is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Steven P. Wallace—a professor, researcher, mentor, and friend. Dr. Wallace worked closely with NRMN as a leader within the DPC’s Coordination and Evaluation Center. Our NRMN colleagues have shared their memories and reflections of him.

- My fondest memories of Steve include sitting and chatting over drinks when we would be together in the same place for a meeting. Steve always found time to sit, relax and connect...and of course during those special times to make everyone laugh. He will be deeply missed.
- When I think of Steve the first word that comes to mind is dedication. His efforts and impact to this consortium will always be felt.

Our NRMN leaders have published an article detailing the success of MyNRMN in connecting mentees and mentors nationwide, which helps diversify the biomedical science field. The article shows that through providing engagement features, helping our community build a personal network of mentors, and guiding members through the mentoring process, MyNRMN has grown to include a diverse population, along with having high engagement activity. Overall, MyNRMN has expanded opportunities for mentorship in the biomedical sciences, particularly among those not from a culture or institution that historically supports mentorship.

A nationwide network of 260+ women faculty in biomedical engineering collectively released a powerful commentary through Cell calling attention back to the most critical barrier to success of Black faculty in the workforce: funding. The commentary suggests solutions for the NIH and other funding entities, individual scientists, the private sector, and academia as a whole on how this can begin to be dismantled.

Research mentors are reticent to address, and sometimes unaware of how, racial or ethnic differences may influence their mentees’ research experiences. Increasing research mentors’ cultural diversity awareness (CDA) is one step toward improving mentoring effectiveness, particularly with mentees from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. The indicators of CDA for research mentors are not yet known. Thus, we developed a scale to assess CDA related to race/ethnicity (CDA–R/E) in research mentoring relationships informed by multicultural counseling theory and social cognitive theory.

An online survey was conducted to assess the impact of COVID-19 on Tiny Earth (TE) faculty (n = 44) teaching and mentoring. Prior to our survey research, TE faculty were trained to teach Tiny Earth content in an online format. Our research showed that COVID-19 impacted the ability of TE faculty to work and conduct research. Faculty also reported that family, university, and department were helpful resources in adjusting to the challenges that the pandemic presented, with noteworthy male and female differences in response. COVID-19 also impacted the manner in which TE faculty provided or received mentorship, with an increase seen in online mentorship support for students and an increase in barriers when seeking guidance from mentors. Lastly, the majority of TE faculty reported that professional development tools to transition to an online course were needed. These results show the challenges faced and the social support that is helpful in adjusting to increased demands due to COVID-19 on TE faculty’s personal and work life.

Maintaining your research team’s productivity during the COVID-19 era can be a challenge. Developing new strategies to mentor your research trainees in remote work environments will not only support research productivity and progress toward degree, but also help to keep your mentees’ academic and research careers on track. We describe a three-step process grounded in reflective practice that research mentors and mentees can use together to reassess, realign, and reimagine their mentoring relationships to enhance their effectiveness, both in the current circumstances and for the future. Drawing on evidence-based approaches, a series of questions for mentees around documented mentoring competencies provide structure for remote mentoring plans. Special consideration is given to how these plans must address the psychosocial needs and diverse backgrounds of mentors and mentees in the unique conditions that require remote interactions.
