On-Farm Climate Action Fund for Nova Scotia Open

OFCAF is part of the Government of Canada's Agricultural Climate Solutionsa multi-stream program to help farmers tackle climate change.

Farmers can access up to $100,000 in funding to implement Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) that will contribute to on-farm sequestration of carbon and reduce greenhouse gases. Eligible projects must focus on:

  • Nitrogen management
  • Cover cropping, or
  • Rotational grazing

Perennia will be implementing the fund to help farmers adopt these practices in Nova Scotia. Training for farmers and agronomists will also be offered over the three-year program, which ends in March 2028.

Deadline for the first intake of applications is August 31, 2025.

The first step in applying is to complete a program pre-screening form, found on this page https://ofcaf.perennia.ca/funding/. Once the pre-screening is submitted and reviewed, a link to the on-line application form will be sent.

For more information on the program please visit ofcaf.perennia.ca

Upcoming Events

Are you interested in learning more about rotational grazing and improving pasture quality for your grazing livestock?

Join Perennia on pasture this summer to discuss soil health, rotational grazing, frost seeding and pasture rejuvenation, fencing talks and more!

Perennia's Summer Pasture Walk Series has begun! Upcoming Pasture Walks will occur:

Registration is now available at Agriculture Learning Opportunities – Perennia

For every pasture walk you attend, your name will be included in a draw that could win you a pasture focused prize valuing over $500.00 including a bag of red clover. The draw will happen at our last pasture walk in December! The more pasture walks you attend, the more chances you have to win!

The Farm Resilience Mentorship (FaRM) Program, an initiative of Farmers for Climate Solutions, is excited to host a webinar with Dr. David Burton, FCS’ Scientific Advisor and Professor Emeritus at Dalhousie University. Together, we will dive deeper into nitrogen management BMPs, and the impact that they could have on building on-farm resilience and reducing emissions.

The Nova Scotia Small Farm Expo will celebrate the provinces small-scale commercial farming community with an educational event in Antigonish on Thursday, July 24th.

Join the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture at the Small Farm Expo as we bring together small-scale commercial farmers, experienced producer-speakers, agriculture service providers, and suppliers in a dynamic trade show setting. This is a great opportunity for peer-to-peer learning, connecting with ag industry professionals and service providers, and sharing insights and experiences with fellow small-scale farmers.

The cost to attend is $30.00, which includes nutrition and coffee breaks, plus a BBQ chicken and pork lunch with a salad bar.

Registration is required and must be completed by Monday, July 7, 2025.

If you have any questions, please contact your Regional Office for more information.

Data-driven decision-making is key to optimizing agricultural performance. Applying this approach in your fields, vineyards, and orchards can improve operational efficiency and reduce input costs. On July 24, we’ll demonstrate how drone imagery and soil mapping tools can detect spatial variability in soil and nutrient levels—supporting the development of site-specific management zones for more targeted and effective input application.

Registration NOW OPEN!

Join us for a full-day, hands-on Silvopasture CALP Workshop on August 12 at the Manning Family Farm (Falmouth, NS) or August 13 at Round Barn Farm (Old Barns, NS). Led by Brett Chedzoy, Senior Resource Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension and a recognized leader in silvopasture across North and South America, Brett brings over 30 years of experience helping farmers integrate trees, forage, and livestock for better animal welfare, pasture productivity, and climate resilience.

These sessions will walk through site assessment, silvopasture establishment, and practical management systems for Nova Scotia’s evolving climate. Whether you're new to the idea or already experimenting, these workshops will be great for all levels!

FREE registration for either session opens soon on Perennia's website. Keep an eye out!

Under the OFCAF Program, Perennia is hosting two Cover Crop focused days this September! Day one is a Cover Crop Extension Training Day that is a discussion-based workshop for agronomists and industry to understand more about the "whys" of the BMPs, current levels of adoption, barriers to adoption in industry, and identifying support for producers. Day two is a field day at the Perennia Fieldhouse and Demonstration site for producers and industry with presentations on current cover crop adoption levels, agronomy and management, and showcasing cover crops in the field!

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
