November 2022

The Nova Scotia Cattle Producers issue a monthly update to all members, occurring on the last Friday of each month. This is comprised of industry news and updates, upcoming events, upcoming sales and relevant articles.

Call for Nominations

The NSCP are seeking nominations for three positions to be elected in 2023 for Zone 3, Zone 6 and Member at Large. The Zone Directors will be elected at their respective Zone meetings. The Member at Large will be elected at the NSCP Annual General Meeting on March 11, 2022, with the location to be determined. The nomination period will be open from November 1st – 30th, 2022, with nominees being announced in the December 2022 NSCP newsletter. Please contact the office for a nomination form.

Price Insurance Focus Groups!

December 5-17

Meal will be included in session: PARTICIPATION HONOURARIUM AVAILABLE* $150 per operation. Eligible producers shall be in good standing with their provincial cattle producer association, RSVP by Friday December 2nd, and participate in a survey and discussion in the focus groups.

National School Food Policy - Share Your Thoughts

The Government of Canada is taking steps to build a national school food policy. This policy could help guide the expansion of school food programs in Canada. When more children have healthy meals at school, it helps them learn and sets them up to reach their full potential.


They need your input

They want to hear about your experiences and views on school food programs and the most important objectives for a school food policy. To do this, they have launched an online consultation.

Please visit their consultation web page to read the discussion paper and share your views by December 16, 2022. 

Canadian Cattle Association - Wants to hear your story!

The Canadian Cattle Association wants to hear your story and are inviting you to share your unique sustainability story with them by recording and submitting a 1–5-minute video.

Using your smartphone camera, tell them your sustainability story.

Nova Scotia Cattle Producers Programs - Deadline November 30th, 2022

The NSCP have two programs available for this year:

Nova Scotia Genetic Improvement Program (formerly the Elite Sire Program, or Bull Bonus) This provides funding for applicable sire purchases, as well as for genomic testing and carcass ultrasound.


Nova Scotia Soil, Pasture & Forage Management Program This program provides funding for lime purchases, as well as soil, manure and/or feed analyses.

Farm Financial Fluency Training Program

From registering for the program, you will benefit from a deeper understanding of your financial situation and the different options available to remain competitive and take calculated risks for continued success. Farm Management Canada is currently offering a program focusing on beef productions. The programs will be applicable to farmers across Canada.

Farm Safety: Farm Safety Plan Workshop

Join The NSFA in person at the NSFA office in East Mountain to learn about and create a Farm Safety Plan for your farm. Guides and Workbooks will be supplied at the event.

AHEM Webinars - Mental Health

January 17

According to the 2021 study of ‘Farmer Mental Health in Canadian’ done by the University of Guelph; 1 in 4 Canadian Farmers felt that their life was not worth living, wished they were dead, or thought of taking their own life in the last 12 months.



Executive Director Megz Reynolds says "The needle has moved regarding mental health in agriculture it still has a long way to go before we are no longer loosing community member's to death by suicide. It is on each and everyone of us to work together to end the stigma surrounding mental health and change the culture, this starts with self education and by joining the conversation."

 

AHEM is pleased to partner The Do More Agriculture Foundation in delivering a 1-hour live virtual webinar focused on mental health in agriculture.

Nova Scotia Cattle Producers

The NSCP have two programs available for this year:

These programs have an application deadline of November 30th, 2022, and are a one-step process application. No applications will be reviewed before the application deadline, so there will be no follow-up on missing documents. Applications will only be considered if all necessary information is provided. Please call the office prior to submitting if you have any questions. Application forms, as well as program guidelines, are available here!

Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture’s programs for funding for agriculture are now open for the 2022-2023 year! A full list of these programs, such as the Cattle and Sheep Industry Development Program and the Wildlife Mitigation Program, can be found on the Nova Scotia Programs webpage HERE!

Canada

An all-inclusive information portal is available to help farmers, food processors and agri-food businesses find information on new and existing programs and financial resources to address hardships that many are experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
