The NSGLC is pleased to offer the October 2022 issue of Ocean and Coastal Case Alert. This month’s edition includes a case challenging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to eliminate seasonal restrictions on dredging in two North Carolina harbors. Environmental groups alleged the agency failed to consider impacts on endangered or threatened species of sea turtles and sturgeon.

2022 marks the NSGLC’s 20th anniversary! SandBar 21.4 celebrates the anniversary with a special 20th anniversary cover and a timeline of important events in Law Center history. The edition also includes articles on recent litigation over rules to protect the right whale, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. EPA, a proposed national marine sanctuary, and a challenge to a rule requiring industry-funded at-sea monitors.

Lake Champlain Sea Grant reached out to the National Sea Grant Law Center seeking information about whether the Federal Partners Working Group (FPWG) is limited in its membership to five federal agencies. NSGLC Law Fellow Samantha Hamilton’s review of the statute, the FPWG Memorandum of Understanding, and federal membership on other related committees is located here:

Later this year, the NSGLC will be releasing a call for proposals for research projects examining the effectiveness of coastal adaptation and resilience laws and policies. The competition will be open to Sea Grant Programs, colleges, universities, and nonprofit, non-academic institutions directly associated with research activities (e.g. public policy organizations).

The Great Lakes Aquaculture Collaborative (GLAC), led by Minnesota Sea Grant, was awarded $425,000 by the National Sea Grant Office. GLAC supports an environmentally responsible, competitive and sustainable aquaculture industry in the Great Lakes region. The Law Center will assist GLAC with compiling and analyzing aquaculture laws in the Great Lakes region.

On October 19th, NSGLC hosted a discussion group on the Jackson water crisis at the University of Mississippi School of Law.
