The U.S. Department of State's NSLI-Y Alumni Travel Program is a one-time initiative of the Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), and administered by American Councils for International Education (American Councils). NSLI-Y Alumni Travel Program Application Now Available!

Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, August 30, 2022, 11:59 P.M. U.S. Eastern Time

The Alumni Travel Program offers participants a 10-14 day overseas cultural immersion experience, including a minimum of 8 hours of language instruction, cultural activities and engagement with local youth and the community.

A limited number of in-person short-term cultural and language study programs are offered to alumni who have successfully completed NSLI-Y virtual programs and have not participated in an in-person exchange program.

These programs will take place in 2023. Dates and locations for each language are available on the application. Please note that program dates may be subject to slight change depending on travel logistics. Program descriptions will be shared with finalist notifications.

Applications for the Alumni Travel Program are due on August 30, 2022 and applicants will be notified of their status by mid-October, 2022.

To be eligible for the NSLI-Y Alumni Travel Program, applicants must: 

1. Have successfully completed all requirements for one or more of the following virtual programs: 

• 2019 Virtual NSLI-Y

 • 2020 Virtual NSLI-Y 

• 2021-22 Virtual NSLI-Y 

• 2020 Virtual Summer Intensive (VSI) 

• 2021 Virtual Summer Intensive (VSI) 

• 2022 Virtual Summer Intensive (VSI)

 • 2020-21 Virtual Academic Year 

2. Not have participated in a NSLI-Y program that included any international travel. 

3. Not have participated in other ECA in-country programs or been selected to participate in future ECA programs that include international travel. 


Preference will be given to: 

1. Alumni who are no longer eligible for NSLI-Y academic year or summer programs due to aging out. 

2. Alumni with no or limited international travel experience.
