Expired Respirators. Reused Masks. Nurses in the Nation's Original Covid-19 Epicenter Offer Sobering Accounts of What Could Come.

When nurses at one Washington State hospital complained about having to use expired respirators, they allege that staff were ordered to remove stickers showing the equipment
was years out of date.

"
Nurses in Washington, where the virus first surfaced in the U.S., believe their early experience can help prepare health care workers elsewhere. The Washington State Nurses Association has even produced a list of recommendations for other states, called " Lessons learned from the front lines ." Those lessons include, "Know your employer's plan for PPE (personal protective equipment)," and "Know the testing and treatment protocols now."

When the novel coronavirus spread across Washington in February and March, the lack of supplies in hospitals, coupled with uncertainty over what protective measures were needed, presented many nurses with a difficult choice. Nurses given a dangerous job could accept the assignment and its attendant risks, or refuse and face possible discipline. The WSNA, a union that represents more than 17,000 nurses,  advised members who refused an assignment to stay and do other jobs. For those nurses who accepted an "abnormally dangerous" assignment, the union advised filling out what is called an ADO form. ADO stands for Assignment Despite Objection.

When ProPublica mentioned ADO forms to some nurses in Washington, they did not react with enthusiasm. "It's the stuff of fairytales," said one nurse in the Seattle area who specializes in mental health. "Nurses, administratively, are strongly discouraged to use the forms or outright shamed for documenting what they are uncomfortable with in a caregiving situation." "

That was an excerpt from a story by a story by Ken Armstrong and Vianna Davila, posted last week on ProPublica. Read the entire article for lessons learned.

With Hospitals Reaching Breaking Point, Pregnant People Face
Additional Uncertainty During Pandemic

(Source: nytimes.com)
"New York hospitals cannot force pregnant people to give birth without a chosen support person. That's what an executive order released by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Sunday revealed. The order comes in response to a move by the NewYork-Presbyterian and the Mount Sinai hospital systems to bar partners from labor and delivery rooms, causing widespread outrage. But how are pregnant people coping with new hospital guidelines and uncertain conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic? We speak with freelance journalist Amy Littlefield, who focuses on the intersection of religion and healthcare, about what she is confronting now at the end of her pregnancy. Her piece for Insider is "I'm nine months pregnant, and I'm bringing my baby into a world I no longer understand. I have to remain hopeful anyway."

Federal Appeals Court Lets Texas Resume Abortion Ban

(Source: vice.com)
"
A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled that Texas can temporarily enforce a ban on abortions as part of its coronavirus response.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a temporary stay on a ruling from a lower court that had blocked Texas from enforcing the ban. State officials argue the ban is intended to conserve medical supplies for health workers on the front lines of the coronavirus response. But abortion rights advocates say states are using the pandemic as an excuse to block access. "

"People Were Sobbing, People Were Begging for Us to See Them Anyway": Texas' Abortion Ban Is Cruel

(Source: newsweek.com)
"Care has been thrown into chaos. Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas said it was forced to cancel 261 procedures last week; Amy Hagstrom Miller, president and CEO of Whole Woman's Health, told Mother Jones that her three Texas clinics turned away at least 150 patients while the initial abortion order was in place. A couple of those patients are minors, who she said "went to a really troubled place." She told me one woman was turned away because of the order after she drove 250 miles to seek abortion care. She refused to leave the clinic, instead pledging to stay in the area until she was able to get her abortion. Eventually, she traveled to a clinic in Colorado; she and a friend drove nonstop to get there, crashing in an Airbnb that they tried to disinfect as best they could before falling asleep. The next day, they drove back to Texas.
"

That was an excerpt from Becca Andrews' story, posted yesterday on Mother Jones. It examines the ban's personal toll on clinic staff and the people who can no longer access their abortion care services.
