Anti-Trans Bill Killed in South Dakota Senate Committee Vote

A South Dakota Senate committee has voted against a bill that proposed criminal punishments for doctors who prescribe puberty blockers and hormone treatments
for trans teens.

(Source: vox.com)
" Over the last month opposition to the bill has tried to focus on the adverse effects denying care to transgender youth would have on their mental and physical health.

Statistics from the Trevor Project show that in 2019 54% of transgender youth surveyed by the organization reported "seriously considering suicide" in the last year. Meanwhile, according to the Trevor Project, "pubertal suppression has also been shown to significantly improve overall psychological functioning after only six months of care" and significantly lower suicidal ideation compared to those who did not receive such treatment."

That was an excerpt from Sydney Bauer's article, posted two days ago on The Daily Beast. Another line from the article: " LGBT rights groups now say they hope the defeat of HB 1057 is a beacon to the other states considering similar legislation." Amen to that.

Nurse Speaker Needed for ANSIRH Webinar
Respond by February 14!

ANSIRH, a collaborative research group at the University of California, San Francisco, will be hosting a 1-hour webinar to discuss evidence related to state-level policies that regulate abortion providers. Specifically, this webinar will:
  • Explore how abortion fits into the professional values of nurses and facility surveyors;
  • Describe the research evidence on how the targeted regulation of abortion facilities and providers impact patient safety and outcomes
The intended audience for this webinar is local- and state-level health department staff, particularly those that work in outpatient facility regulation.

At this time, we are looking for a nurse with experience working in public health departments or as facility surveyor to join us to speak to the first point listed above. If you are interested in participating, please email Claudia Zaugg, Project Manager at ANSIRH, at  Claudia.zaugg@ucsf.eduor call her at 510-986-8943. She needs to hear from you by February 14 , 2020.

You can learn more about ANSIRH's research on abortion facility regulation  here .

Prenatal Care Takes a Village

Can group prenatal care make pregnancy and birth safer?

(Source: news.uams.edu)
" Proponents say one reason it works is that social support reduces stress. Dr. Amy Crockett, M.D., a maternal fetal medicine specialist in South Carolina who has researched CenteringPregnancy's track record, said that many of the pathways that lead to preterm birth are inflammatory pathways, and that inflammation is also associated with psychosocial stress.

Dr. Monica McLemore, Ph.D., a professor of nursing at the University of California San Francisco and a board member of the Centering Healthcare Institute, hypothesized that group care is effective because it provides peer-to-peer learning, more surveillance of providers and longer appointments that lead to deeper knowledge. This is particularly important given that medical systems often fail people from marginalized communities. "

That was an excerpt from Sarah DiGregorios's article, posted last month on NYT Parenting. Another excerpt:

"The data on improved outcomes has been mixed. A 2016 survey analysis showed group care didn't reduce preterm birth or intensive care admissions, with the notable exception of black women, whose risk of preterm birth decreased. Black women are 50 percent more likely than all other American women to give birth early, a risk that is increasingly linked to the experience of racism."

Oklahoma Republicans Want to Suspend Abortion Providers' Medical Licenses: Spotlight on the States

Anti-choice legislation advanced in Oklahoma and Arizona last week, and a Mississippi Republican proposed a bill even more extreme than the state's near-total abortion ban.

(Source: kjrh.com)
" The Oklahoma House passed legislation last Thursday that would strip doctors of their medical licenses if they provide abortion care. The bill's sponsor called it part of the ongoing effort to end legal abortion in the state, the Associated Press  reported .

The bill, HB 1182, stipulates that a doctor would lose their license for one year if they're found to have provided abortion care, with an exception for when a patient's life is at risk. The 71-21 vote to approve the bill came after four hours of debate, according to the AP. Oklahoma Rep. Cyndi Munson (D-Oklahoma City) called the anti-choice legislation "dangerous."

The legislation, if passed by the state senate and signed into law by Gov. Kevin Stitt (R), is likely to face a court challenge. "

related legislation moving through Mississippi, Arizona and Michigan.

NWLC Abortion Actually Campaign Launch

" Abortion - and the people who have them - have been called a lot of things. But what is  abortion actually ? An act of love. An act of compassion. An act of healing. An act of selflessness. Abortion actually is something 1 in 4 people will experience in their lifetimes. It's health care. It's freedom. Abortion actually can be emotional - or not. It's a personal decision. A family decision. A you-know-your-body-and-your-life-the-best decision. If you've had an abortion, you're the only one who can speak to what abortion  actually  felt like to you - and that's how it should be. It's time to reframe the conversation on what abortion actually is about. What is abortion actually to you? "

The inaugural class of Haring Fellows will start in September, 2020. Applications will be available on January 15, 2020.

Through this fellowship, we strive to create a premier LGBTQ+ healthcare training program that enhances knowledge, increases compassion, and brings awareness to the healthcare barriers that LGBTQ+ communities face. This full-time, 12 month program consists of precepted and independent sessions as well as specialty rotations and didactic portions. Haring Fellows will have benefits and earn a modified salary. The fellowship is designed to give the academically prepared practitioner an opportunity to spend more time under the guidance of a preceptor.
