It's Our Honor to Share
An Open Letter from Two Black Midwives to Our Community

As we begin the second month of a new decade, a month acknowledged for honoring and celebrating the contributions of African Americans, markedly in the "Year of the Midwife," Nurses for Sexual and Reproductive Health (NSRH) affirms our commitment to speaking truth to power and our dedication to anti-racism as we lift up the rich legacy and tradition of Black midwives - past, present, and future.
We are honored to be in community with Black midwives like Aiyana Davison (CNM, WHNP) and Lodz Joseph (CNM, MPH), and we invite you to read Aiyana and Lodz's piece, "An Open Letter from Two Black Midwives to Our Community," a labor of love and calling in of the midwifery community "to honor the diverse history and legacy of midwifery in America.

You can read their piece, as well as our organizational commitment to centering our mission and walking more deeply in our values by clicking  here.

These states are starting to embrace doulas -
especially for vulnerable moms

(Source: healthlaw.org)
" The efforts to expand doula access, encouraging as they are, beg the question: Why don't more states and the federal government cover the care through Medicaid and require private insurers to include it as a standard maternity benefit? The U.S. has the highest rate of infant and  maternal deaths  among affluent industrialized countries, with shameful racial disparities. Black women die of pregnancy- and birth-related complications at nearly three times the rate of white women, and Native American women die at double the rate. Programs across the country like the Priscilla Project offer free doula services in underserved communities, but there are not nearly enough. Most women who want a doula must pay out of pocket - an average $1,200 in New York City, according to one  study.   For too many families, this essential service is an unaffordable luxury. "

That was an excerpt from Fran Smith's story, posted last week on USC Annenberg's Center for Health Journalism. It closes with the following:

"The Priscilla Project has provided doula services since 2003. By participating in the New York state pilot, it will finally get reimbursement for them. But money isn't the whole point, said Sondra Dawes, the program coordinator. "Our goal is to prove
that every woman should have a doula."" Agreed -- *all* pregnant people should be able to have a doula, not just those who are 'vulnerable.'

Nurse Needed to Participate In Webinar

ANSIRH, a collaborative research group at the University of California, San Francisco, will be hosting a 1-hour webinar to discuss evidence related to state-level policies that regulate abortion providers. Specifically, this webinar will:
  • Explore how abortion fits into the professional values of nurses and facility surveyors;
  • Describe the research evidence on how the targeted regulation of abortion facilities and providers impact patient safety and outcomes
The intended audience for this webinar is local- and state-level health department staff, particularly those that work in outpatient facility regulation.

At this time, we are looking for a nurse with experience working in public health departments or as facility surveyor to join us to speak to the first point listed above. If you are interested in participating, please email Claudia Zaugg, Project Manager at ANSIRH, at  Claudia.zaugg@ucsf.eduor call her at 510-986-8943. She needs to hear from you by February 14 , 2020.

You can learn more about ANSIRH's research on abortion facility regulation  here .

Vaginas and Probiotics... Two Takes...

Should you use probiotics for your vagina?

""There are some women who could benefit from probiotics - at least in theory," says Dr. Mitchell. Among them are women with bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection. For example, when it comes to recurrent bacterial vaginosis, the thinking is that introducing more of the helpful lactobacilli might protect against that overgrowth of harmful organisms, and consequently reduce recurrent infections. However, proof is lacking, says Dr. Mitchell. If that theory is shown to be true, a probiotic could be beneficial, but no one is sure. And it's not at all clear that taking a probiotic orally will help the vagina."

That was an excerpt from a piece by Kelly Bilodeau, posted on the Harvard Health Blog in December. Now, read on...

Bacterial Vaginosis: What Everyone With a Vagina
Should Know About BV

""The only way I've been able to get rid of BV is to take daily probiotics. After about two to three months of consistently doing this, I stopped getting BV for good. So, if you are suffering from BV, skip the at-home remedies you found on Google. I've already tried them all for you, and they don't work. Instead, educate yourself about your vaginal health - you'll be surprised by how much they left out in health class. And do your own research. Talk to your doctor about starting a daily regimen of probiotics. If it helped my vagina, maybe it can help yours too."

The author of the article excerpted above, Vera Papisova, was at her wit's end before trying probiotics. (Teen Vogue, December 2019)

The Keith Haring Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Fellowship in LGBTQ+ Health - Callen-Lorde

" Welcome to the Keith Haring Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Fellowship in LGBTQ+ Health! Callen-Lorde is so proud to offer the first LGBTQ+ health fellowship available to nurse practitioners. The inaugural class of Haring Fellows will start in September, 2020. Applications will be available on January 15, 2020.

Through this fellowship, we strive to create a premier LGBTQ+ healthcare training program that enhances knowledge, increases compassion, and brings awareness to the healthcare barriers that LGBTQ+ communities face. With this training and experience, our fellows will bring the skills they learn with them to help close the gap in health disparities for LGBTQ+ people.

This full-time, 12 month program consists of precepted and independent sessions as well as specialty rotations and didactic portions. Haring Fellows will have benefits and earn a modified salary. The fellowship is designed to give the academically prepared practitioner an opportunity to spend more time under the guidance of a preceptor.

The Keith Haring Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Fellowship in LGBTQ+ Health is funded, in part, through the The Keith Haring LGBTQ+ Health Equity Endowment, which was established at Callen-Lorde by the Keith Haring Foundation in 2019. "

Planned Parenthood clinic in Kentucky
resuming abortions after halt

(Source: wlky.com)
" A Planned Parenthood clinic in Louisville, Ky., is set to resume performing abortions later this year after the state's former governor halted the procedure.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky  announced on Friday that abortions will resume at the Louisville clinic after it was granted a provisional license from state officials.

The license, which makes the center the second abortion provider in Kentucky, allows for abortions and other reproductive care to be performed starting in March."

That was the beginning of a brief article by Tal Axelrod, posted on The Hill late last week. After the past couple of weeks, we all could use some good news... Just what the nurse ordered!

Sifting in the Afternoon

Some people might describe this room as spare:
a bedside table and an ashtray and an antique

chair; a mattress and a coffee mug;
an unwashed cotton blanket and a rug

my mother used to own. I used to have
a phone. I used to have another

room, a bigger broom, a wetter sponge.
I used to water my bouquet

of paper clips and empty pens, of things
I thought I'd want to say if given chance;

but now, to live, to sit somehow, to watch
a particle of thought dote on the dust

and dwindle in a little grid of shadow
on the sunset's patchy rust seems like enough.
