The Barry Goldwater Foundation for Research Excellence awarded the
2019 Barry Goldwater Scholarship
to
Jacob Parres-Gold
, an undergraduate majoring in biochemistry. The scholarship program is one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics fields, and seeks to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who demonstrate exceptional promise of becoming the nation’s next generation of research scientists.
After graduation, Parres-Gold plans to obtain a Ph.D. in biochemistry and pursue a career as a researcher, and ultimately, a professor. In his undergraduate career, Parres-Gold has gained research experience through his work in Professor Yixian Wang’s (chemistry and biochemistry) lab, and the Amgen Scholars Program at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
Parres-Gold is the second Cal State LA student to be named a Goldwater Scholar and is member of the University's Early Entrance Program. In his spare time, he serves as the president of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Club, and is an avid practitioner of parkour.

Council on Science & Technology
(CCST)
Translators Showcase
during the 2020 CCST Science & Technology Week in Sacramento. Sponsored by Assemblymember Jose Medina (D-Riverside), the event provided an opportunity for graduate students, postdoctoral students, and early-career faculty to engage with, and explain their research to legislative staffers, agency managers, and senior policy leaders.
Johnson is a graduate student in the Department of Geosciences and Environment.

Established in Ink Exhibit
|
|
The opening reception of
Established in Ink: Asian American Tattoos from the Street to the Studio
, was held on January 31, 2020. Curated by
Professor Juily Phun
(Asian and Asian American Studies),
Azalea Camacho
, and
Jamie Zeffrey
, the exhibit displays the work of tattoo artist Richard Vasak of Inkfiend Art Studio, who established himself as one of the renowned artists in the tattoo community. The exbihit features images of life in prison, religious and cultural symbols, women and tattoos, and the Asian American aesthetics in tattoos.
The exhibit is currently on display at the University Library through March 23, 2020.

Lecturer Appreciation Reception
|
|
On February 13, 2020, the colleges of Natural and Social Sciences, and Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology, hosted a joint appreciation reception for lecturers in recognition of their dedication to student success. Outstanding Lecturer Award recipients,
Jessica Bodoh-Creed
(2019-20) and
Howard Lum
(2017-18) were recognized, and lecturers who achieved range elevations for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

The college launched its inaugural professional development program for graduate students. The Teach-to-Train program brings together an interdisciplinary group of students to discuss teaching and learning experiences in a supportive setting. The program will explore teaching career interests and deepen the understanding of pedagogy. 29 graduate students attended the program’s orientation in January and subsequent trainings through the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) will be held throughout the semester.

The college will host its 2020 NSS Spring Food Drive for the
Cal State LA Food Pantry
through March 19, 2020. Donated items will provide currently enrolled students with free food regardless of verified need as a means of supporting their wellbeing. Please drop off donated food items to any NSS department office or the Dean’s Office and place in the blue bin. Items to consider include rice, oatmeal, canned meat, beans, canned fruit, juice, snacks, pasta, and pasta sauce.

Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program Applications
|
|
The Cal State LA Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship program is actively seeking applications from rising sophomores or students who will graduate in Spring 2022. Interested students should also be enrolled in a humanities or social science major, and interested in obtaining a Ph.D. The program offers a paid research experience, mentorship, professional development, and partial repayment of undergraduate or graduate student loans once enrolled in a Ph.D. program. The

Vera R. Campbell Promise Scholarship
|
|
The Institute for Field Research is seeking applications for the Vera R. Campbell Promise Scholarship reserved for Cal State LA students. The scholarship offers students hands-on experience through field schools in geology, environmental studies, ethnohistory, and paleotology. The scholarship provides financial support to attendees and full day-long workshops.

International Conference of the Indian Academy of Applied Psychology in India. The three-day conference, which focused on psychology for global happiness, brought together leading scholars, academics and researchers.

(history) on the publication of Yao's new book, Chinese Funerary Biographies. The book examines medieval epitaphs in Chinese culture.

Peréz-Silverman Endowed Symposium

On Thursday, April 16, 2020, the college will host the
inaugural Peréz-Silverman Symposium
,
“Understanding Health Determinants and Promoting Equitable Healthcare Access,” at the Golden Eagle Ballroom. The symposium is funded through an endowment from NSS alumni,

Amelia Peréz-Silverman
, and will feature a diverse panel of health industry professionals, reflective of our student body, who will discuss critical issues affecting equitable healthcare access in the community.
Students and faculty members are encouraged to display research posters pertaining to health determinants and its impact on the quality of life in the Los Angeles area during the symposium. The planning committee welcomes research topics that address the range of social, environmental, economic, and environmental factors that collectively contribute to the health of residents of the region. The deadline to submit an abstract is March 27, 2020.

Cal State LA Big Data Forum

The College of Natural and Social Sciences will host the
second annual Big Data Forum
with special guest speaker,
Meredith Lee
, executive director and co-principal investigator of West Big Data Innovation Hub, on April 20, 2020. The forum will showcase students’ intentional, innovative projects on community based mapping utilizing the City of Los Angeles’ GeoHub data. The event is free and open to all.
