3 rd Annual NSS Faculty Retreat

The NSS Steering Committee is calling for proposals for the 3 rd Annual NSS College-wide Retreat titled, “ Agents of Change: Promoting Equity-mindedness through Teaching and Research .” The committee invites proposals that showcase the innovative ways in which faculty members engage students in research and practices that promote equity and/or understanding of civic responsibility. All tenured, tenure-track and lecturer faculty are welcome to participate.

For interested presenters, please submit a brief abstract (150 words) by Friday, April 26, 2019.

NSS Strategic Plan Townhall

The NSS Steering Committee invites you to a townhall meeting on April 30, 2019 to offer feedback on the NSS Strategic Plan. Feel free to submit comments or questions ahead of time through the RSVP link below. The event will begin at 3:00 p.m. in MUS 149.

 
25 Years of Zapatismo Across Time and Space

Save the date for an Encuentro (gathering) celebrating 25 years of Zapatismo, continuing the Dialogo and learning from experience. The event will take place from April 26 - 27, 2019 on the university campus, Floricanto Community Center, and Eastside Cafe.

The Latin American Studies program invites proposals for papers, panels, roundtables, workshops, art projects, performances, installations, booths, dialogues, and other activities related to the Zapatista movement and to movements and organizations that are inspired by it. To participate, please submit a short description of your proposal to [email protected] and write “Encuentro” in the subject line.
NSS Alumni Panel

The NSS Alumni Panel will be held on April 24, 2019 at the University-Student Union Theater followed by a catered networking reception. Attendees will gain new perspectives while networking with student leaders and notable alumni.

The Making of The Houseguest from Xinjiang

The Cross-Cultural Center will be showing the documentary “The Making of The Houseguest from Xinjiang ” on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at 4:30 p.m. in Los Angeles Room, University-Student Union. 

“The Houseguest from Xinjiang” is an original play written by ChorSwang Ngin and C.Y. Lee, featuring storylines of encounters between a Chinese Muslim exchange student and a community in Southern California.

The documentary splices together extended scenes from the original play at Cal State LA in October 2017, with interviews with the playwright, producers and directors. A Q&A will be held following the documentary.
Understanding the Concepts of Non-Market Valuation

Hyunhoe Bae, a visiting scholar from Yonsei University of South Korea, will be presenting her research “Understanding the concepts of non-market valuation,” on May 1, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the University Library Community Room (B101).  
 
This lecture examines various methods to estimate shadow prices of non-marketed goods which can be used for public decisions or cost-benefit analyses.

Vote for CaSIG to win $100K

The Civic and Social Innovation Group (CaSIG) is a finalist to win $100,000 in grant funding from the My LA2050 Grants Challenge. If awarded, funds from the proposal will establish the CaSIG Rooted Innovation Incubator (RII) as the vehicle to equip students to spark social enterprises and nonprofits throughout LA that facilitate economic opportunity and promote progress in a number of issues. The RII changes the game of social innovation for students who are intimately aware of their communities’ needs and opens doors for brilliant students who are under-resourced to develop their ideas and climb the economic ladder as they serve their communities.
