SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT
The Dr. Larry and Linda Starr Comeback Student-Athlete Award
| | |
“Everyone applauds when you get back on the court or in the water or on the grass, but no one applauds when you get your stitches out, or able to start walking for the first time, or you achieve symmetrical range of motion for the first time. This is a recognition of the process. It takes literally a village to help get a single person through an injury, and this scholarship is a tacit acknowledgment of what those individuals do to come back.” – Dustin Gatens, NSU assistant athletic director for Sports Medicine
The Dr. Larry and Linda Starr Comeback Student-Athlete Endowed Scholarship was named for NSU Athletics Hall of Fame member Larry Starr, Ed.D. and his wife Linda Starr, M.Ed. The inaugural recipient of this award was Paul Boos-Patton, a senior student-athlete who logged 1,335 minutes—more than any other player on the team—on the soccer pitch this past season.
| | COMMUNITY Partnership | Rock the Ocean | | |
Did you know around 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the oceans?
That's just one of the reasons Rock the Ocean is working to save the three-fourths of the world comprised by the oceans. The organization's signature event, the Tortuga Music Festival, was conceived by founder Chris Stacey, using his background as a music producer and promoter and his desire to protect the seas. The three-day festival brings live music to the beach with a focus on meaningful environmental impact. Funds raised during the event are used to support programs—including several NSU initiatives—featured at the festival's Conservation Village.

NSU Swimming Coach Ben Hewitt won his first swimming championship title—a group relay race in Indiana—at the age of 10. Individual accolades followed, and a connection with the pool was forged. After college, he picked up a whistle and stopwatch and began coaching others to reach their swimming goals.
On Saturday, March 15, the NSU Women's Swimming team earned a three-peat under Hewitt's leadership. The Sharks pulled off a “fourth-quarter comeback” to win their third consecutive NCAA Division II women’s national title. Swimming World recently featured Hewitt and his journey to success.
| | PROGRAM Highlight | Art+Design | | Have you seen the sharks circling the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale? Inspired by Christo's Surrounded Islands, this art installation is the brainchild of Kolos Schumy, assistant professor in the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts at NSU's Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. The technology behind the art is also being used by students in NSU's B.A. in Arts+Design program. The final exam for one of this year's courses featured virtual reality headsets on the beach. Schumy also directed the senior project course this year, which culminated in an exhibition of student work in the Cotilla Gallery at the Alvin Sherman Library. Metamorphosis, the 14th Annual Senior Exhibition, is on display through May 1. | |

About the Artist
The masthead for this month's issue was created by Savannah, GA native Raul Perez. Perez hopes to become a concept artist and design characters for the video game industry. When illustrating, Perez draws inspiration from artist Kazuma Kaneko to create semi-realistic characters with a moody, melancholy, or pensive tone. He typically uses neutral colors with small splashes of vibrant color to enhance the details.
