Martin Luther King, Jr., won the Nobel Peace Prize. President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Pop Tarts, Diet Pepsi, and the Ford Mustang made their debuts. And on December 4, 1964, the modern university that would become NSU was born. Terry Mularkey, M.A.S., CFRE, vice president for advancement and chief of staff, looks back 60 years and shares stories from this moment in the university's history.

DONOR Spotlight | Milton and Barbara Jones

Fellows Society Members Milton and Barbara Jones are longtime supporters of NSU. Milton Jones also serves on the NSU Board of Trustees. Recognized for their philanthropy at the 2024 Celebration of Excellence, the couple's generosity includes endowed scholarships and support for NSU's efforts to help veterans and active-duty members of the military. The home of the Veterans Resource Center and Army ROTC on NSU's Fort Lauderdale/ Davie campus was recently renamed the Milton and Barbara Jones Office of Military Affairs in their honor.

Florida Congresswoman Secures Funding for NSU Research

Breast cancer survivor and U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently presented NSU Barry and Judy Silverman College of Pharmacy with a $963,000 check from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The funds will be used to support research for the early detection of breast cancer and other diseases.

COMMUNITY Spotlight | Ocean Exchange

Connected by a passion for innovation and concern for the health of our oceans, NSU supports the annual Ocean Exchange awards, recognizing Blue Economy startup organizations and collegiate efforts.

In 2024, Ocean Exchange awarded $320,000 to companies working on affordable oyster reef restoration, a new technology for clean micro waste-to-energy, and decreasing carbon footprint through an economical, green methanol. Our NSU University School students were thrilled to receive the prestigious High School Award presented by Guy Harvey, along with a $1,000 prize, recognizing their outstanding achievement and dedication.


NSU hosted the opening reception of this year's event at the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation. Finalist pitches were presented at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.

About the Artist

The masthead for this month's issue was created by Savannah, GA native Raul Perez. Perez hopes to become a concept artist and design characters for the video game industry. When illustrating, Perez draws inspiration from artist Kazuma Kaneko to create semi-realistic characters with a moody, melancholy, or pensative tone. He typically uses neutral colors with small splashes of vibrant color to enhance the details.
