The Celebration of Excellence is NSU’s annual signature event, hosted by our president. During the celebration, we share NSU’s achievements and future vision, present the President’s Award for Excellence in Community Service, and introduce the newest members of NSU’s Shark Circle—donors who have generously given $1 million or more to the university.

Meet a MAKO

NSU Shark Circle Society members Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, and his wife LaDonna met in New York City more than 30 years ago. They moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2016 when he was tapped to lead what is now NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine. “Less than half the people who have long COVID know they have it…”—Nancy Klimas, M.D., Director of NSU’s Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine

Makena Carr, research program manager at NSU's Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine (INIM), provides an in-depth look at a new research study designed to understand more about long COVID and the doctors who are determined to find answers.

Women's Basketball

Fins up for NSU's women's basketball players! The #16 ranked team clinched at least a share of the Sunshine State regular season conference title with their victory over Florida Southern on February 24. The Sharks have won a record-breaking 20 consecutive games—dating back to December 2, 2023. The streak includes an upset of the 15th-ranked University of Tampa Spartans in early January. Morgan Kane, a graduate student in exercise and sports science, was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week on January 22, 2024.

GIVING Opportunity

NSU’s Charismatic Megafauna and Oceanography Laboratory's (CMOL) Amy Hirons, Ph.D., is dedicated to preserving and conserving marine and freshwater ecosystems. The lab's researchers in the NSU Halmos College of Arts and Sciences explore habitats in Alaska, Antarctica, the Caribbean/Florida, the Hawaiian Islands, and Peru. Target species include the Florida manatee, Hawaiian monk seal, northern fur seal, bowhead whale, sea otter, and Humboldt penguin.

About the Artist

The masthead for this month's issue was created by Gabriel A. Hidalgo. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Hidalgo moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in the arts. He will graduate from NSU in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. His work is defined by graphic elements and vibrant visual concepts offered through colors and self-expression. In the future, Hidalgo aspires to work full time as a graphic designer/artist for a visual communications firm or start his own design business.
