COMMUNITY Spotlight | American Heart Association | |
Heart disease is the no. 1 killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. The American Heart Association (AHA) is dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. A shared focus on cardiovascular health unites NSU with the organization's more than 35 million volunteers and supporters. Here's a snapshot of the university's partnership with AHA.
- On March 9, NSU will host the 2025 Broward Heart Walk. In 2024, members of Nurse My Heart (pictured above), the team from NSU's Ron and Kathy Asaaf College of Nursing raised more than $7,700 for the event.
- The South Florida Heart Ball takes place on May 17. NSU President and CEO Harry K. Moon, M.D., FACS, FRCSEd, and Ann Marie Moon are the co-chairs for this year's event.
- The AHA's proven Practice-While-Watching technique is utilized in the Heartsaver CPR AED course offered by NSU's Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. No medical training is required to attend the class, which provides instruction on basic CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and choking relief for non-health care providers.
- NSU alumna Farisha Saifi (M.B.S.) was a 2023-2024 scholar in the AHA's National Hispanic Latino Cardiovascular Collaborative program. Saifi earned a master's in biomedical science at NSU, where she worked to advance women's health through her research.
- Another NSU alumnus, Robert Hill (M.P.H.), serves as vice president of community impact for AHA, where he works with families and young children struggling with health issues.

When illustrating, Perez draws inspiration from artist Kazuma Kaneko to create semi-realistic characters with a moody, melancholy, or pensative tone. He typically uses neutral colors with small splashes of vibrant color to enhance the details.
