Ben Hecht 2018 Distinguished Visiting Chair in Public Interest Law
On February 21, Ben Hecht presented “The 5 Drivers of Transformative Social Impact You Need to Know in 2018” to over 90 NSU Law students, faculty, staff and guests. Ben Hecht is the President & CEO of Living Cities, a collaborative of eighteen of the world’s leading foundations to work together to boldly fight poverty in America’s cities.

Hecht serves as the 2018 the John B. Anderson Distinguished Visiting Chair in Public Interest Law. Supported through the generosity of the C. William Trout Charitable Trust, this program allows the Shepard Broad College of Law to expand its teachings, projects, and research in the field of public interest law.

Public Interest Law Society Auction raises $12,000
The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) hosted the 25th annual auction on February 1, 2018. With all the generous contributions, the event raised over $12,000 for the Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship. PILS honored Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc., NSU Law Alumni Lisa Goldberg, Esq., and NSU Law student Michaela Vrazdova for their continued support and dedication to our community.

NSU Law and community organizations host Immigration Legal Screening Clinic
On Saturday, February 24th, NSU Law, Americans for Immigrant Justice, Catholic Legal Services, and Hispanic Unity of Florida along with NSU Law student organizations ILSA, ILO, HSBA and PILS partnered to provide free legal screenings to the community. This pro bono immigration clinic offered over 60 participants the chance to learn more about how immigration law affects them and their families with Know Your Rights Presentations. Participants also had the opportunity to participate in intakes and receive a free consultation with an immigration attorney.

Public Interest Law Day
NSU Law hosted 40+ federal state and local public interest organizations in the NSU Law atrium on February 15th. These employers shared their experiences and spoke to students about their work. The purpose of the event is to educate law students about opportunities in the field of public interest law and to encourage their participation in the community.
NSU Law hosts Regional Transactional LawMeet
The National Transactional LawMeet is the premier “moot court” experience for students interested in a transactional practice. NSU Law participated this year as host of a regional conference and by hosting our own competitive team.

The National Transactional LawMeet is a part of the LawMeet family of live, interactive, educational competitions designed to give law students a hands-on experience in developing and honing transactional lawyering skills. Professor Donna Litman and NSU Law coordinate the regional competition for 12 teams with over 40 team members and advisers on February 23, 2018. A special thank you to our volunteer judges: James H. Barrett, Kiyan Bigloo, Colleen M. Grady, Andrew J. Markus, John T. Murphy, Mahesh H. Nanwani, Flora R. Perez, Jay M. Rosen, Mike Segal, Zachary M. Schlichter, Erin M. Swick, Jeffrey D. At the regional competition held in Georgia, NSU Law’s own team took home a significant honor. NSU Law students Hannah Wolinsky (2L) and Timothy Shields (3L) were Semi-Finalist for the Sellers at the University of Georgia Regional LawMeet also on February 23, 2018.

Environmental Law Symposium
Environmental Issues in Changing Times

The conference will explore environmental law and policy shifts at the federal level under the new administration as well as at the state level after the 2018 Florida legislative session. Presenters will include practicing lawyers and academics offering a local, state and national perspective on issues such as climate change and sea level rise, energy issues, regulatory issues, sea level rise, property rights, and other issues.

Spoke on a plenary panel at the LatCrit 21st Biennial Conference on “Outsider Jurisprudence and Progressive Formations” in Orlando, Florida.

Ten NSU Law students were inducted into the newly recognized Phi Kappa Phi international honors society, which focuses on recognizing students and faculty across all academic disciplines. The NSU student inductees are Veronika Balbuzanova, Johnna Ehlert, Tammy Eick, Lora Esau, Carlos Ibarcena, Jamie Nakoa, Meredith Norkus, Bethany Pandher, Anna Peterson, and Jason Smith . Dean Jon Garon was inducted as part of the founding of the chapter.

The inaugural student induction ceremony included students from all eighteen NSU colleges.
