The International Law Students Association (ILSA) earns Top National Public Interest Award from ABA Law Students Division
August 10-13, 2017

NSU Law has been awarded the 2017 Judy M. Weightman Memorial Public Interest Award by the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Law Student Division. The honor was announced at the ABA Annual Meeting in New York City, held August 10-13, 2017.
The award recognizes the efforts of the NSU Law International Law Students Association (ILSA) Journal of International and Comparative Law, and ILSA’s Bilingual component, which is comprised of members fluent in two languages. Full Press Release
Hate Speech and Our Community Response
August 31, 2017

Over 160 guests attended a community forum, co-hosted by NSU Law and the NSU College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, regarding the recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia. The event brought together school leaders, law students, and experts to discuss the importance of identifying and confronting racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, bigotry, and hatred. The forum featured two panels: one addressing the legal and historical contexts of the events; the other exploring effective community response.
United States Supreme Court Swearing-In Ceremony March 19, 2018

This spring, a limited number of law alumni will have the opportunity to be admitted to appear before the United States Supreme Court. NSU Law alumni are invited to apply now and join us at our upcoming Supreme Court Swearing-In Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Monday, March 19, 2018. Successful applicants will attend the Supreme Court session where attorney Bruce Rogow will move for the admission of the NSU Law candidates to the Bar of the Supreme Court.

Law alumni and special guests will gather for a small reception in Washington, D.C., on Sunday evening, March 18. Breakfast will be provided on March 19 at the Supreme Court prior to the ceremony. Attorneys and other guests in attendance will be invited to stay for the Court’s oral argument sessions.

Nova Law Review Symposium
Entrepreneurship 2.0: Legal, Regulatory, and Economic Challenges to the Innovation Economy
NSU Shepard Broad College of Law and the Nova Law Review will address the intersection of law and business as it focuses on new technologies, ethics, and regulation. The Symposium is an opportunity for academics, practitioners, and students in a variety of legal, business, and technology to exchange ideas and explore emerging issues.
The Symposium will be held on October 6, 2017. CLE Credits will be available.

Professor Heather Baxter and Associate Dean for Faculty and Student Development & Professor Olympia Duhart presented “Grit in the LRW Classroom: Practices that Promote Passion and Perseverance” at the 2017 Biennial Conference of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, held at the University of Minnesota Law School on July 19, 2017. 
Veterans Law Clinic Director Jayme Cassidy joined the Board of Florida Justice Technology Center, a nonprofit organization that increases access to civil justice in Florida.
Professor Michael Dale presented “Developing deposition skills in one hour—using the National Institute for Trial Advocacy method” to the Broward Public Defender’s Office on July 26, 2017. Professor Dale served as an instructor with Professor Kathleen Webber Nunez, Clinic Director Jayme Cassidy, and NITA Instructor and attorney Jim Zloch on using the NITA Model to teach millennials at the NSU Law International Consortium for Global Legal Education’s 2017 Faculty Training Workshop on July 27, 2017. Professor Dale also served as an instructor on “Advocacy In Immigration Asylum Matters for Children” at a NITA/ABA co-sponsored trial skills training program, held in Houston, Texas, August 1-5, 2017.
Associate Dean for Faculty and Student Development & Professor Olympia Duhart and Associate Dean of Graduate and Online Programs and Adjunct Professor Susan Stephan presented on “Best Practices for Active Teaching and Effective Feedback” at NSU Law’s Adjunct Faculty Training, held August 17, 2017.
Dean Jon M. Garon will be a panelist on “Identity Theft, Economic Crimes and Electronic Fraud” at the Broward County Crime Commission’s Psychology of Cybercrime Conference , to be held in Deerfield Beach, Florida on September 14, 2017. The panel will be moderated by NSU Law alumnus Senior Judge Joel Lazarus (J.D. 1977).
Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus Joseph D. Harbaugh, with the Practising Law Institute, received the “Best Award” from the Association for Continuing Legal Education for the Interactive Learning Center’s “Mastering Negotiations: The Significance of Planning and Preparation.” The award was presented at the Association’s Annual Meeting, held in Montreal, Canada on August 1, 2017. | Read Full Article Here.
Professor Areto Imoukhuede , with former NSU Law visiting professor Vincenzo Zeno-Zencovich, presented and was a panelist at the Roma Tre University Law Department research discussion on “Gun Control and Gun Rights: Trans-Atlantic Views,” held in Rome, Italy on May 24, 2017. While on sabbatical this year, Professor Imoukhuede presented at the University of Miami, The John Marshal Law School, Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law, and many others.
Professor Robert Jarvis was quoted in the Miami Herald article Legal ruling in: Facebook ‘friends’ aren’t necessarily real friends, on August 23, 2017.
Professor Shahabudeen Khan published the featured article One Decade Later: Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law Alive and Well in the Intercultural Human Rights Law Review of St. Thomas University Law School, found at 12 Intercultural Hum. Rts. L. Rev. 115 (2017).
Professor James Levy was appointed Co-Editor in Chief for the Thomson Reuters publication Perspective: Teaching Legal Research and Writing.
Dean of Student Services and Professor of Law Michele Struffolino is serving on the planning committee for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida Committee on Professionalism Summit, to be held on September 15, 2017.
Professor Fran Tetunic accepted an offer of publication for her article The Irony of Mediator as Problem Maker: Mediator Misconduct Setting Aside Mediated Agreements in the Harvard Negotiation Law Review, to appear in print in the Fall 2017 issue.
Assistant Professor Marilyn Uzdavines accepted an offer to publish her article Dying for a Solution: The Regulation of Medical Devices Falls Short in the 21st Century Cures Act in the Nevada Law Journal. Professor Uzdavines also presented to faculty at the University of Barcelona on the future of mental health care coverage under the Trump Administration, in May 2017.

Gary Betensky, has been reappointed to the executive committee of the Ambassadors Board of Nova Southeastern University and received a special recommendation from the Florida Supreme Court, the Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, and the Florida Pro Bono Coordinators Association for his pro bono work as an attorney ad litem representing children.

1995
Bruce S. Liebman has joined Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck as an employment practices liability partner. He will be co-managing partner of the firm’s Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton offices.

2002
Sorraya M. Solages-Jones , joined “Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey & Fronrath” in West Palm Beach focusing on appellate law.

2004
Scott Atherton , has changed the name of their firm to Atherton McAuliffe & Reeder, P.A. (AM&R) in West Palm Beach. It was formerly known as the Atherton Law Group. AM&R is a business litigation and trial law firm.

2006
Janette M. Smith , published “Constitution Day 2017 The Legal Community can Influence Florida Constitutional Revisions” in the August 2017 Broward County Bar Association Barrister magazine.

Natalie Giachos , published “SEO Made Easy: Get Your Firm Listed on Google’s First Page” in the August 2017 Broward County Bar Association Barrister magazine.

2010
Paul E. Przepis , has joined the Kimsey Law Firm in Tampa as the firm’s managing attorney. Przepis handles all personal injury and criminal defense matters for the firm.

2014
Adam Tannen , has joined Shutts & Bowen, LLP in Miami, FL focusing on litigation.

2015
Augusto Perera , of Albert Bordas, P.A. , in Miami was the guest speaker at “Desayuno con CABA — Immoral, Scandalous & Offensive Trademarks” at Holland & Knight.

Kyle S. Roberts , joined Kelley Kronenberg Fort Lauderdale office. Roberts assists in handling matters related to third party insurance defense and general liability.

Bryan Dyer , is a contract Specialist at the National Ocean & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Norfolk, VA.

Jordan Dulcie has joined the West Palm Beach law firm of Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley, PA , focusing on personal injury and specializing in the areas of medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, wrongful death, and products liability.

William F. Mueller , joined Kelley Kronenberg in the firm's Fort Lauderdale office. Mueller assists in handling matters related to real property litigation for banks and other financial services providers.

The Moot Court Society
The Moot Court Society’s Elizabeth Fridman and Nicholas Palomino were quarter finalists at the Annual Workers’ Compensation Educational Conference. In the quarter final round, Elizabeth and Nicholas had the honor of presenting argument before Judge William R. Holley (Florida), Judge Jason P. Cording (Virginia), and Judge Johnny Mason (Georgia).

Trial Advocacy Summer Institute
The NSU Trial Association hosted its third annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI) from August 8-12, 2017 at NSU Law. TASI is a five-day course taught by NSU Law faculty and members of our litigation community. Students practiced oral advocacy, trial skills, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination, and evidence law in a trial setting. NSU Law alumni served as volunteer judges and instructors, and the event drew nearly seventy participants.
Orientation 2017
Fall orientation at NSU Law welcomed over 250 new students during the week of August 14 to 18. Over 200 full-time students, 43 part-time students, and 10 duel-degree students enrolled for the 2017-2018 year, increasing NSU Law’s full-time enrollment numbers from last year. Orientation was a chance for students to network with their new classmates and professors, learn more about classes and extracurricular activities, and sit in on various panel discussions and previews of courses. Students also participated in team building activities, such as a challenging College of Law scavenger hunt and a boat-building collaboration event. In addition, 1L students participated in professionalism presentations with NSU Law alumni Judge Kal Le Var Evans, Judge Robert Diaz, Judge Giuseppina Miranda, Judge Dennis Bailey, Judge Betsy Benson, Judge Renee Goldenberg, Judge James Laird Martz II, Judge Alberto Ribas, Jr., Judge Stacy M. Ross, and Judge Michael I. Rothschild, as well as sixteen NSU Law alumni attorneys. The judges and attorneys held small group ethics panel discussions with the incoming law students. Fall 2017 has brought with it an exciting class of students who are excited to succeed.
Republican Law Students Association  
Kevin Cooper, Candace Lerman, and Cynthia Miller, Vice President and members of the Republican Law Students Association, were invited by the White House and the Vice President’s Office to attend the Vice President’s remarks on U.S. plans regarding Venezuela.
