Guardianship and All That Jazz: Law, Science, and Community Building

The roundtable brings together stakeholders in the AIDD community to network, learn, and plan strategic responses to address the legal needs of AIDD persons. This year the roundtable will include a CLE opportunity with confirmed speakers from the local bench and bar. This interdisciplinary event will explore the procedural and substantive aspects of Florida guardianship law.

(JD 1984) will be inducted into the Broward County Women's Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is hosted by the Broward County Women's History Coalition, will be held on Sunday, March 31, 2019.

(JD 1983) will be honored at A Celebration of Women in the Legal Community, Broward’s Women Pioneers International Women’s Day event on Friday, March 8, 2019. This honor is being given to her as the Founder of the Broward County Mental Health Court, the first mental health court in the nation.

On February 21, Ronald Long presented “Law and Emotion - The Financial Industry and the Fight Against Elder Financial Abuse” to over 80 NSU Law students, faculty, staff, and guests. Ronald C. Long is currently the Director of Regulatory Affairs and Elder Client Initiatives, reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer of Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC. In addition to his presentation, Mr. Long attended and spoke at a variety of NSU Law classes during his week-long visit.
Long serves as the 2019 John B. Anderson Distinguished Visiting Chair in Public Interest Law. Supported through the generosity of the C. William Trout Charitable Trust, this program allows the Shepard Broad College of Law to expand its teachings, projects, and research in the field of public interest law.
Earlier in the week, Barbara Atwell, Professor of Law and Director of Diversity Initiatives at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University gave a special presentation on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and focused specifically on the Medicaid expansion piece of the ACA.

NSU Law hosted 40+ federal, state, and local public interest organizations in the Leo Goodwin Sr. Building on February 21. These employers shared their experiences and spoke to students about their work. The purpose of the event is to educate law students about opportunities in the field of public interest law and to encourage their participation in the community.

Sharon Abrahams (Ed.D. 1998) guided a business etiquette workshop to over 50 NSU Law alumni and students in February 2019. Dr. Abrahams discussed the importance of first impressions, listening and eye contact, and the priorities of networking. She also demystified the protocols of eating and drinking with colleagues in a dinner or networking event.

Developing Interview Skills through the Practice Interview Program

The Office of Career Services and Professional Development an held inaugural Practice Interview Program on February 12, 2019. Five alumni interviewers performed practice interviews for 20 students who registered to participate in the Spring On-Campus Interview program. The NSU community will be hosting a Sexual Assault Title IX presentation that will cover the

Red Tide, Green Algae, Drilling Bans and More: Post – Election Environmental and Land Use Law Landscape
The seminar will feature lawyers and other speakers from south Florida and around the state, addressing environmental law changes resulting from the November 2018 Florida Constitutional Amendments, current issues involving south Florida’s water pollution problems, recent and pending legislative, rule and policy changes coming from Washington and Tallahassee. NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Summer Fellowships provide law students with an opportunity to earn compensation for dedicating their summer to public service. NSU Shepard Broad College of Law offers six different summer fellowship funding sources to students who wish to work with a public interest or government organization:
1. The Christopher T. Byrd Environmental Law Fellowship;
2. The Ferroli Family Public Interest Law Fellowship;
3. The Martin A. Feinrider Summer Fellowship for International Human Rights;
4. The Ovid and Clare Lewis Public Interest Fellowship;

Scott Alan Clark
, age 46, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away on February 9, 2019 at his residence. He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 2007. Scott was a master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine, and manager of family-owned business, Hinkles Hamburgers. Contributions in Scott’s memory can be given to The Shriners Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
Douglas J. Roberts
, age 50, passed unexpectedly on February 21, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 1994. Douglas is survived by his wife of 19 years, Lisa Vunkannon-Roberts, daughter Olivia, and son Pierce. Mr. Roberts was Board Certified in Construction Law. He practiced in the areas of Construction Law and Commercial Litigation for over 15 years. He was a founder and partner in
