Guardianship and All That Jazz: Law, Science, and Community Building

Friday, March 15, 2019 | 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 pm. Includes Live Jazz Luncheon

The roundtable brings together stakeholders in the AIDD community to network, learn, and plan strategic responses to address the legal needs of AIDD persons. This year the roundtable will include a CLE opportunity with confirmed speakers from the local bench and bar. This interdisciplinary event will explore the procedural and substantive aspects of Florida guardianship law.

Broward County honors three NSU Law Judges
Judge Renee Goldenberg, Judge Ginger Lerner-Wren, Judge Melanie May
The Honorable Renee Goldenberg (JD 1984) will be inducted into the Broward County Women's Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is hosted by the Broward County Women's History Coalition, will be held on Sunday, March 31, 2019. RSVP

The Honorable Ginger Lerner-Wren (JD 1983) will be honored at A Celebration of Women in the Legal Community, Broward’s Women Pioneers International Women’s Day event on Friday, March 8, 2019. This honor is being given to her as the Founder of the Broward County Mental Health Court, the first mental health court in the nation.     RSVP

The Honorable Melanie G. May (JD 1981) will be honored at A Celebration of Women in the Legal Community, Broward’s Women Pioneers International Women’s Day event on Friday, March 8, 2019. This honor is given to her as the first female judge to preside over the Broward County Drug Court, and the first and only drug court judge to be on the board of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.   RSVP
Ronald C. Long 2019 Distinguished Visiting Chair in Public Interest Law

On February 21, Ronald Long presented “Law and Emotion - The Financial Industry and the Fight Against Elder Financial Abuse” to over 80 NSU Law students, faculty, staff, and guests. Ronald C. Long is currently the Director of Regulatory Affairs and Elder Client Initiatives, reporting to the Chief Compliance Officer of Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC. In addition to his presentation, Mr. Long attended and spoke at a variety of NSU Law classes during his week-long visit.

Long serves as the 2019 John B. Anderson Distinguished Visiting Chair in Public Interest Law. Supported through the generosity of the C. William Trout Charitable Trust, this program allows the Shepard Broad College of Law to expand its teachings, projects, and research in the field of public interest law.

Earlier in the week, Barbara Atwell, Professor of Law and Director of Diversity Initiatives at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University gave a special presentation on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and focused specifically on the Medicaid expansion piece of the ACA.
40+ Public Interest Legal Organizations meet with NSU Law Students
NSU Law hosted 40+ federal, state, and local public interest organizations in the Leo Goodwin Sr. Building on February 21. These employers shared their experiences and spoke to students about their work. The purpose of the event is to educate law students about opportunities in the field of public interest law and to encourage their participation in the community.

The NSU community will be hosting a Sexual Assault Title IX presentation that will cover the perspectives on sexual harassment in the legal profession and the role of Title IX in maintaining harassment-free law schools.

Mentoring Dinner: Business Etiquette Training
Sharon Abrahams (Ed.D. 1998) with Assistant Dean Janice Shaw and Assistant Director Michelle Denis.
Sharon Abrahams (Ed.D. 1998) guided a business etiquette workshop to over 50 NSU Law alumni and students in February 2019. Dr. Abrahams discussed the importance of first impressions, listening and eye contact, and the priorities of networking. She also demystified the protocols of eating and drinking with colleagues in a dinner or networking event.
Developing Interview Skills through the Practice Interview Program

The Office of Career Services and Professional Development an held inaugural Practice Interview Program on February 12, 2019. Five alumni interviewers performed practice interviews for 20 students who registered to participate in the Spring On-Campus Interview program. The interviewers met with each student for 30 minutes and provided verbal feedback. Special thanks to our alumni volunteers: Matt Botkin (J.D., 2014), April Martindale (J.D., 2015), Christina Hero (J.D., 2016), Brooke Latta (J.D., 2013), and Damary Valle Stokes (J.D., 2006).

Red Tide, Green Algae, Drilling Bans and More: Post – Election Environmental and Land Use Law Landscape
The seminar will feature lawyers and other speakers from south Florida and around the state, addressing environmental law changes resulting from the November 2018 Florida Constitutional Amendments, current issues involving south Florida’s water pollution problems, recent and pending legislative, rule and policy changes coming from Washington and Tallahassee. Speakers will emphasize land use and environmental issues impacting Florida’s coasts.

Jessup Moot Court Team finished as Quarter-Finalists
The team of Sheena Kelly, Cecilia Ferrari, Vanessa Alvarez, Diana Mateo, and Alec Taylor, coached by Michelle Murray, Michael Richmond, and Rob Beharriell competed in Chicago, IL at the 2019 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

In addition, Vanessa Alvarez won 7th best overall advocate.

NSU Law Summer Fellowships
NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Summer Fellowships provide law students with an opportunity to earn compensation for dedicating their summer to public service. NSU Shepard Broad College of Law offers six different summer fellowship funding sources to students who wish to work with a public interest or government organization:

1.      The Christopher T. Byrd Environmental Law Fellowship;
2.      The Ferroli Family Public Interest Law Fellowship;
3.      The Martin A. Feinrider Summer Fellowship for International Human Rights;
4.      The Ovid and Clare Lewis Public Interest Fellowship;
5.      The Public Service Summer Fellowship; and
6.      The Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship.

Marta Estevez has been promoted to Chief Innovation Officer of Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA). This role was created as a way to advance sustainable and new ideas and promote leadership within CCLA in an effective and meaningful way. Ms. Estevez will be responsible for idea development and the efficient and transparent implementation of innovative projects and processes for the organization.
 
Sean Thompson is part of the newly formed firm of  Liberman Cabrera Thompson & Reitman  in Ft. Lauderdale. The firm focuses on medical malpractice and personal injury claims.
 
2005
The Honorable Maxine Cheesman is highlighted in the Judicial Profile section of the February 2019 Palm Beach County Bar Association Bulletin . The article, written by Andrea McMillan, begins on page 1 and continues on page 12. Judge Cheesman was invested as a circuit judge for the 15 th Judicial Circuit on March 1, 2019. Judge Cheesman is the first African-American and Jamaican to be elected judge in Palm Beach County, without first being appointed. She will have chambers in Division FA/IB (Family/Probate) in the main courthouse.
 
Kristin Murphy has won the 2019 Broward Teacher of the Year Award. Murphy, a pre-law teacher at Nova Middle School, was one of five Broward County teachers nominated for the award. Along with the award Murphy won Thursday night, she also received a $1,000 check and a bouquet. Murphy has been teaching for 20 years and has spent the last three at Nova Middle School in Davie.  https://wsvn.com/news/local/kristin-murphy-of-nova-middle-school-wins-broward-teacher-of-the-year/

Michael S. Kantor  of Weiss Serota Cole & Bierman in Ft. Lauderdale has been named director of legislative affairs of the Human Resources Association of Broward County.

Alexander D. Kochman has been named a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg.

Brittney Little has joined the firm of Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Aughtry as an associate in the firm’s Atlanta office’s tax practice group. Little represents clients in disputes with the IRS with a special focus on cross-border and international tax issues. She also advises multinational corporations on international tax matters including U.S. inbound and outbound tax issues related to global transactions, U.S. withholding tax, and international tax compliance and reporting.

Alison Trejo has been named a partner in the Fort Lauderdale office of Kelley Kronenberg. 
 
Sonia Oliveri , a Partner with Kelley Kronenberg , has been recognized by EB5 Investors Magazine as one of the Top 5 Rising Stars in the EB-5 industry. She was featured in a special Top 25 Attorney edition of the publication among the EB-5 industry’s most accomplished and influential legal professionals . An Italian native, fluent in six languages, including Italian, Farsi, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English, Oliveri leads Kelley Kronenberg’s EB-5 Practice Group and is highly experienced in assisting investors and their families with all stages of the EB-5 process. She is dual degreed having earned her Juris Doctor from Roma Tre University in Rome, Italy and then her second Juris Doctor degree from NSU Law. 
 


In Memorium

Scott Alan Clark , age 46, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away on February 9, 2019 at his residence. He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 2007. Scott was a master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine, and manager of family-owned business, Hinkles Hamburgers. Contributions in Scott’s memory can be given to The Shriners Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607. 

Douglas J. Roberts , age 50, passed unexpectedly on February 21, 2019 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 1994. Douglas is survived by his wife of 19 years, Lisa Vunkannon-Roberts, daughter Olivia, and son Pierce. Mr. Roberts was Board Certified in Construction Law. He practiced in the areas of Construction Law and Commercial Litigation for over 15 years. He was a founder and partner in Stearns, Roberts, and Guttentag,LLC . The Mass of Christian Burial took place on February 27 th at St. Coleman Catholic Church in Pompano Beach. Online tributes may be made at www.kraeerfairchild.com
