NSU Names Debra Moss Vollweiler as Interim Dean for
Shepard Broad College of Law

NSU is pleased to announce Debra Moss Vollweiler, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, has been appointed as Interim Dean of the Shepard Broad College of Law.
Dean Vollweiler will be replacing Dean Jon M. Garon who will begin a sabbatical in 2020 returning to NSU Law as a member of the faculty. “Debra Moss Vollweiler is a proven leader who has been a part of NSU Law for 25 years,” says Dean Garon.
A member of the College of Law since 1995, Dean Moss Vollweiler was appointed to the law faculty in 2001 after having served as Director and Founder of the Public Interest Law Center. She earned tenure as full professor in 2008 and became Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in 2017. Dean Vollweiler’s teaching focus is on Contracts, and the Uniform Commercial Code Articles 2 and 9.

She has published more than thirty works on professionalism, teaching, learning, and attorney discipline. Her latest work, entitled
If you Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em: Institutionally Managing Law Students as Consumers,
which is forthcoming in the Pace Law Review. She is the co-author of
Legal Education at a Crossroads
, an interdisciplinary book examining curricular change in law schools nationwide and advocating for databased curriculum development.
Dean Vollweiler is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching excellence and professionalism including the College of Law’s Executive of the Year for the NSU Student Life Achievements Awards (2018), NSU’s Distinguished Professor of the Year award (2017), the Florida Bar’s statewide Law Faculty Professionalism Award (2017), National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism Fellow (2016), "Professor of the Year" by the College of Law Student Bar Association (2007, 2014 & 2015), and College of Law Faculty Member of the Year for the NSU Student Life Achievement Awards (2015). She is a frequent speaker on teaching, learning and professionalism at national conferences, including the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), Southeastern Association of Law Schools, National Conference of Bar Examiners, and ABA Conferences, among others. She has served as a member of two executive committees of AALS, and serves as a site inspector and team chairperson for the ABA accreditation process. Dean Vollweiler earned degrees from Tufts University (B.A.) and Boston College Law School (J.D. cum laude).

Dean Jon M. Garon Completes his Service as Dean to Begin a Year of Speaking and Publishing

As announced in September, Dean Jon M. Garon will return to the faculty at NSU Law beginning in January 2020. In addition to remaining a tenured member of the faculty, President George Hanbury has been appointed Dean Garon to serve as the Director of the Intellectual Property, Technology and Cybersecurity Law Program for the College of Law.
Dean Garon plans an ambitious publication and public speaking agenda during his sabbatical before returning to his teaching duties. Among these, the third edition of “Entertainment Law and Practice” is scheduled for publication in 2020, his new work, “A Short and Happy Guide to Privacy and Cybersecurity” is scheduled for publication in 2021, and the “Law Professor Desk Reference,” is scheduled for 2022. Upon his return, Dean Garon will focus his teaching on Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law, Cybersecurity.

NSU Law Celebrates December 2019 Graduates
|
|
On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, twenty-four graduates were honored at the December Graduate Reception. Dean Jon Garon opened the ceremony with a welcome message, followed by Julie Farach as the student speaker and Professor Randolph Braccialarghe as the faculty speaker. They both were selected by the NSU Law December 2019 graduating class. The NSU law atrium welcomed more than 250 enthusiastic guests cheering on their new attorneys to be.
Dean Michele Struffolino read off the names of the twenty-four graduates as they crossed the stage to shake hands with Dean Garon. NSU Law December graduates completed 584 hours of pro-bono service with organizations, such as Americans for Immigrant Justice, Broward Legal Aid, the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Two students received Pro Bono Honors: Joannes Raminez (Gold Level Distinction), Meagan Kelleher (Silver Level Distinction). All graduates received the sounding blocks to go with the gavels that they received when they started law school. Congratulations, good luck on the Bar Exam and cheers to a successful legal career.

In January we will welcome Dr. Susan D. Landrum as our new Assistant Dean for the Academic Success and Professionalism Program. Prior to joining NSU Law, Dr. Landrum served as the Assistant Dean for Academic Achievement at St. John’s University School of Law and as Director of the Office of Academic Achievement at Savannah Law School. Before becoming a law school administrator and educator, she also practiced as an associate attorney at Zieger, Tigges & Little LLP and clerked as staff attorney for the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

Canned Immunity Continues
|
|
The Public Interest Law Society and the National Security and Law Society worked together to promote, gather, and donate over 5,500 canned goods to LifeNet4Families and the Fisher House.
“Canned Immunity” is a College of Law tradition where students who donated canned goods are entitled to pass on a question if called on in class by their professor. The student’s primary motivation, however, was to reach out to those less fortunate. Competition played a role in the donation process as classes competed to have the highest number of donations. Professor Michael Flynn and Professor Michael Richmond’s section received this honor.

Presented at a public forum, “Election Security & Your Vote” on December 5, 2019, at the Hollywood Beach Culture & Community Center. The non-partisan event was hosted by Canova’s community advocacy group, Progress For All, and cosponsored by Hollywood Democrats, the Broward Republican Party, Bring It Home Florida, and the Republican National Lawyers Association. The forum included leading election experts on the vulnerabilities in our election systems and discussed a number of proposals to reform future elections to ensure fairness, accuracy, and transparency.

Professor Michael Dale
Will be program director at a National Institute for Trial Advocacy three-day trial skills program in December at the Children's Law Center of California (CLCC) in Los Angeles. In November Professor Dale teamed with a second NITA instructor, to conduct a NITA teacher training program for supervising lawyers at CLCC. Together with three other long-standing NITA teachers, they will be assisting the newly trained supervisors in conducting a three-day trial skills program for 32 relatively new CLCC attorneys.

Dean Emeritus Joseph Harbaugh
Was elected to a two-year term as Chair of the Board of Florida Humanities, the Florida affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). As Chair of the Programs Committee for the last five years, Harbaugh has supervised several million dollars of funding to support programs presented to thousands of Floridians focused on literature, history, jurisprudence, philosophy, archaeology, ethics, the environment, history and criticism of the arts, and other aspects of the social sciences, which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods. During Harbaugh’s term as Program Committee Chair, the Council developed the unique Florida Stories app, which provides free cultural, historical, and architectural walking tours of 35 communities across the state of Florida.
