NSU Law response to COVID-19

NSU continues to monitor the health and well-being of all its students, faculty and staff. The COVID-19 situation is monitored closely and the NSU community is receiving updates from the NSU Office of the President.

All NSU college classes across all programs have been suspended effective 11:59 pm March 12, 2020 through March 22, 2020. Beginning March 23, all NSU Law classes will be held online.

The NSU Shepard Broad College of Law has the utmost concern for the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, while remaining committed to academic success. We appreciate all members of the community working together with us in meeting these dual goals. 

At this time NSU Law has canceled and postponed all its March 2020 events. University policy is prohibiting events with attendance of more than 50 people, so we are working to convert some April events to remote access. Please monitor email for further information.

SSRN has listed Professor Garon's recent paper Dysregulating the Media: The Unintentional Deregulation of American Media a Top Ten publication on six different distribution lists.

Professor James Wilets 

Professor Wilets is working on creating a documentation of center for human rights abuses that occurred in the everyday lives of Broward County, FL residents under Jim Crow/apartheid. The history will be a part of the Broward County’s Destination Sistrunk Welcome center, a black historical destination.

1981

Douglas McIntosh has joined Segal McCambridge after combining the two firms, Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney and McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya. He is a shareholder in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. McIntosh’s practice focuses on insurance defense. Mr. McIntosh is the current Chair of the Board of Governors of NSU Shepard Broad College of Law.  

1982

James C. Sawran has joined Segal McCambridge after combining the two firms, Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney and McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya. He is the managing shareholder in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. Sawran defends professionals and healthcare clients in a range of high-stakes litigation matters. Over the course of his career he has represented hospitals, nursing homes, physicians, surgeons, podiatrists and other healthcare providers in medical malpractice and related claims. He has served as lead trial counsel to one of the largest hospital corporations doing business throughout Florida and has represented clients in class actions and complex product liability matters. 

1992 

Hollis Salzman, partner and co-chair of the Antitrust and Trade Regulation practice at Robins Kaplan, has been elected Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Antitrust Law Section. The election was confirmed on January 30, 2020. PLEASE NOTE: This is a correction from the February 2020 newsletter as to the date the election was confirmed.  

1994

Beth-Ann Herschaft wishes to share with the NSU Law community previous work on cruise ship liability that is timely in light of today’s world events. In 1992, she published an article regarding cruise ship liability for medical malpractice in the Nova Law Review and she was quoted in an article about the same subject in the SunSentinel on July 17, 2006. Ms. Herschaft retired in 2009 from the Broward County Attorney’s office. 2003

Manu Davidson was promoted to partner at Braverman Greenspun in New York. Davidson focuses her practice on representing the interests of condominium and cooperatives in litigation involving a wide array of challenging issues, ranging from breach of contract disputes to claims of discrimination in housing and accessibility issues, such as those under the FHA, Title III of the ADA, the New York State Human Rights Law and the New York City Civil Rights Law. She also represents attorneys and real estate professionals in professional malpractice claims.

Kent B. Frazer opened The Frazer Firm, P.A., in Jupiter, Florida. Frazier litigates business and commercial disputes, and provides counsel to businesses, executives, professionals, and individuals in contract negotiations, business transactions, and operations. 

2005

Matthew Schwartz became a shareholder at Kass Shuler in Tampa.

2006

Jennifer Diaz of Diaz Trade Law was appointed to the South Florida District Export Council. Diaz focuses her practice on assisting companies in successfully complying with the vast U.S. federal laws and regulations for import and export transactions as well as supply chain security

2007

Annabella Barboza of Barboza Law & Associates in Fort Lauderdale is the 2020 president of the Broward Attorneys Real Estate Council. Barboza is Board Certified by The Florida Bar in Real Estate Law. Her practice includes the legal representation of real estate owners, investors and lenders in the acquisition, sale, and finance of real property as well as in foreclosure cases.

2008

Brooke Ehrlich was promoted to partner at Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman in their Fort Lauderdale office. Ehrlich’s primary areas of practice include employment litigation, labor law, commercial litigation, and appellate law.

2009

Michael Kantor was promoted to partner at Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman in their Fort Lauderdale office. Kantor’s primary areas of practice include employment litigation, labor law, and commercial litigation.

2011

Dane Leitner was named an equity partner at Ward Damon in West Palm Beach. Leitner concentrates his practice in the areas of civil litigation, marital and family law, and real estate law which includes condominium and homeowner association law.

Marc A. Marra has been promoted to partner at Kelley Kronenberg in Fort Lauderdale. Marra focuses his practice on assisting banks and other financial service providers with regulatory, enforcement, transactional, and litigation matters. He also handles representation of Condominium and Homeowner’s Associations throughout South Florida in areas including collections, foreclosures, estoppel, enforcement of covenants, vendor negotiations, and day-to-day management. Marra is the current president of the Broward Chapter of the NSU Law Alumni Association.

2012

Natalie G. Coldiron was promoted to member at Icard, Merrill, Cullis, Timm, Furen, and Ginsburg in Sarasota. Coldiron focuses her practice in the area of real estate law, real property closings, and title insurance.  

Jennifer L. Rosinski joined Robinson, Pecaro & Mier in Sunrise.

George Taylor was promoted to partner at Brinkley Morgan in Fort Lauderdale. He practices in the Estate and Trust Litigation and Business Litigation practice groups. His Estate and Trust Litigation practice focuses on resolving disputes, will and trust contests based on undue influence, removal of personal representatives and trustees for breach of fiduciary duty, litigation between trust protectors, trustees, and trust beneficiaries. Taylor’s Business Litigation practice focuses on solving legal problems resulting from commercial and business relationships, including the litigation of those matters in both state and federal courts.

Daniel A. Velasquez became a partner at Latham Luna Eden & Beaudine in Orlando. He is in the firm’s bankruptcy reorganization department. Velasquez concentrates his practice on complex commercial reorganizations.

2013

Ilana Olman has joined Segal McCambridge after combining the two firms, Segal McCambridge Singer & Mahoney and McIntosh Sawran & Cartaya. Olman is a shareholder in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. Her practice includes a broad range of insurance coverage and bad faith claims and lawsuits, where she has represented insurers in complex insurance coverage disputes relating to commercial general liability, property, errors and omissions, directors and officers, umbrella and excess policies, as well as other specialty insurance products.  

Rebecca A. Rodriguez of counsel at GrayRobinson in Fort Lauderdale and Miami has been appointed to the board of directors of Legal Aid Service of Broward County. Rodriguez focuses her practice on state and federal litigation, appeals, and general compliance matters for corporate clients, financial institutions, and government entities.

2015

Levi D. Thomas joined Kubicki Draper in Fort Myers. Thomas focuses his practice on automobile and motorized vehicles, insurance coverage, and premises liability claims.

2019

Vanessa J. Alvarez joined Robinson, Pecaro & Mier in Sunrise.

Nicholas Fiorello joined Kelley Kronenberg in Fort Lauderdale. He assists in handling matters related to Business Litigation and Complex International Corporate Transactions.

Natalie C. Fisher joined Kelley Kronenberg in Fort Lauderdale as an attorney. She assists in handling matters related to Complex Commercial and General Business Litigation, and Construction Defect Litigation.

2020

In Memoriam

Alan Wayne Workman (JD 1991) passed away on November 14, 2019. He was 58 years old. We were made aware of his passing when it appeared in a publication from the Florida Bar. All were advised, "If you want a way to honor Alan's memory and celebrate his life, just raise a glass or remember him fondly when you get together for upcoming holidays with your loved ones."
