NSU Law Alumni Newsletter - June 2020
|
|
NSU Law students, faculty, and staff continue to mobilize through the current social justice crisis that impacts the entire nation.
The NSU Black Law Student Association (BLSA) led the way for the NSU Law community in denouncing racism, prejudice, and police brutality. The BLSA Statement read, in part: "As law students, we too have the power to raise our voices. Let us encourage each other in reforming and reconstructing our justice system into one that demands equality and fair treatment regardless of race. We will not continue to stand by silently as more black and brown lives are senselessly taken by police misconduct around the world." For full statement visit:
NSU Law Stands In Unity webpage.
The student group also included a list of books and resources that address systemic racism.
The NSU Law Faculty also issued a resounding Anti-Bias and Social Justice Resolution. The resolution, which affirms an institutional commitment to combat systemic racism and uphold the rule of law, was modeled after the faculty resolution adopted by Penn State Dickinson Law. The full NSU Law resolution is available at
The NSU Law Stands in Unity webpage
.
The resolution was brought to the faculty by Dean Debra Moss Vollweiler, and the effort to adopt the Anti-Bias and Social Justice Resolution was led by Associate Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Public Impact & Professor of Law, Elena Maria Marty-Nelson and Associate Dean for Faculty And Student Development & Professor of Law, Olympia Duhart.
On June 10, 2020, Dean Duhart and Dean Marty-Nelson led a dynamic and engaging Virtual Town Hall for more than 70 members of the NSU Law community on "The Role of the Lawyer in Eradicating Racism: Rights, Responsibilities and Resilience." Panelists included Professor Areto Imoukhuede, Professor Jane Cross, Jordana Rostant Nunes, President, NSU Law BLSA, Anton Marino, Staff Attorney for ACLU of Florida, Dr. Steven Gold, Director, Trauma Resolution & Integration Program and Professor, NSU College of Psychology and Samantha Janvier, Psychology Trainee, College of Psychology.
The BLSA organized a virtual "Say Their Names"5K Walk for Justice which had more than 47 virtual walkers and runners and more than 80 donations. A few photos from the walk are below.
The NSU College of Law is committed to organizing more events to continue this critical conversation and exploring solutions to combat racism. All information is available at:
