Please join us in congratulating 166 JD, 65 MS, and the first NSU Law LL.M. student who will be graduating with their respective degrees from NSU Law this May. NSU Law also celebrates the
NSU undergraduate Paralegal Studies and Paralegal Certificate Program students earning their degrees this term.
NSU and NSU Law continue to evaluate the best way to hold the live celebration of these outstanding academic achievements of our graduates when it is safe to have groups assembled together.
Members of the JD Class of 2020 provided more than 6,100 hours of pro bono service to the local community. Thirty-four candidates participated in the Pro Bono Honor Program, earning Gold (300+ hours each), Silver (125-299 hours each) and Bronze (50-124 hours each) honors.

Congratulations to all four of the College of Law 2020 STUEY finalists and our winner, Professor Megan Chaney, who won the university-wide honor for Co-curricular Advisor of the Year. Professor Chaney joined NSU Law in the Summer of 2013 and was awarded tenure in 2016. Professor Chaney has worked tirelessly to help fortify the advocacy pillar of the law school’s global initiative. Professor Chaney co-directs the Criminal Justice Field Placement clinic, teaches Criminal Law, Trial Advocacy, Criminal Procedure and Advanced Trial Advocacy, while also coaching nationally recognized competitive trial and moot court teams.

17th Judicial Circuit Internship Welcomes
40 NSU Law students
|
|
More than 40 NSU Law students were placed with members of the 17th Judicial Circuit for the 2020 Summer internship program. This program is designed to expose law students to judicial practice. With the assistance of the Honorable Robert F. Diaz (J.D. 1984), Professor Heather Baxter (J.D. 2000), and Michelle Denis (J.D. 2015) Associate Director in the Office of Career Services and Professional Development, rising 2L students are paired with 17th Judicial Circuit Court judges. Students gain first-hand insight in to the legal profession through observation, legal writing and research, and engage in legal discussions with various judges and attorneys. NSU law students are eligible to receive pro bono hours or receive academic credit by participating in the Judicial Field Placement Clinic, led by Professor Heather Baxter.

Professor Kathy Cerminara
Served as a judge for two 2020 nationwide scholarly paper competitions sponsored by the Law and Society Association. One was to determine the undergraduate student paper that best represented outstanding law and society research, and the other was to determine the graduate student paper that best represented outstanding law and society research.

Associate Dean for Faculty And Student Development, Director of the Legal Research and Writing Program & Professor Olympia Duhart
The ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar notes the publication of the long-anticipated third edition of the
Legal Writing Sourcebook
. The Sourcebook is the primary reference source for those designing, directing, and teaching in legal writing programs. Associate Dean and Professor Olympia Duhart served on the Executive Steering Committee for the book. Professor Duhart also co-authored two chapters:
Pedagogical Methods in First-Year Courses
and
Ensuring Quality Instruction.
Professor Duhart serves on the Publications Committee for the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.

Professor Marilyn Uzdavines
Participated as a video panelist in an Interprofessional Education (IPE) activity with colleagues from the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences and the NSU College of Psychology and College of Pharmacy. The panel discussion will be used as part of a grant titled, “Opioid Curriculum Integration Initiative,” and will also be used in classrooms throughout NSU’s various colleges. Professor Uzdavines discussed the benefits of having a lawyer as part of the interprofessional team when caring for patients taking opioid medications and also discussed the legal and regulatory barriers that are preventing the comprehensive adoption of an interprofessional approach to healthcare practice.

Lorna Brown-Burton was interviewed in the May 2020 issue of the Broward County Bar Barrister on page 15. Brown-Burton has served on the Florida Bar Board of Governors representing the Seventeenth Circuit since June 2012. She was elected to the Executive Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee and serves on the Board Review on Professional Ethics, Budget, and Program Evaluation Committees. Brown-Burton is a partner at

Creary has served on the Florida Bar Board of Governors representing the Seventeenth Circuit for two years and is the Board of Governors Liaison to the Public Interest Law Section, and the Clients Security Fund. Rambana & Ricci, an immigration law firm in Tallahassee, where she specializes in complex immigration matters.

Jennifer Diaz, President of
Diaz Trade Law has had an article titled
PPE Imports During Covid-19 published in Bloomberg Law. Diaz is a Board Certified International attorney specializing in Customs and International trade law. Diaz focuses her practice on assisting companies in successfully complying with the vast U.S. federal laws and regulations for import and export transactions as well as supply chain security. Diaz also spoke at the “Top Customs and FDA Enforcement Issues for Imports of Pharmaceuticals, Biologics and Medical Devices,” FDANews’ webinar.

Michael A. Harris of
HARRISLAW in Miami appeared as the discussion leader for two panels, “Mr. Roboto: Tech issues” and “The Show Must Go On — EB5,” at the American Immigration Lawyers Association South Florida Chapter’s 41st Annual Immigration Law Update in Miami Beach. Harris focuses his practice on immigration law and is a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in Immigration & Nationality Law.

David Miller, ABA delegate on behalf of the Palm Beach County Bar Association, had his article

May 2020 issue of the Palm Beach County Bar Association Bulletin beginning on page 5 Miller is an attorney with
Mathison Whittles, LLP in Palm Beach Gardens. Miller focuses his practice in many areas of law including class action, construction, commercial/business litigation, landlord/tenant, medical malpractice, personal injury, and probate.

Jocelyne Macelloni is an attorney at
Barakat Law. Macelloni represents businesses in state and federal courts throughout the country and in various practice areas including corporate disputes, employment, construction, commercial real estate disputes, asset recovery, factoring and other UCC-related disputes, and protecting creditor’s rights in bankruptcy. Macelloni is also an
adjunct professor of law at the Shepard Broad College of Law.

AOD: Alcohol on Demand published in the May 2020 issue of the Broward County Bar Barrister on page 11. Lida focuses his practice on criminal defense and professional license defense.
2016
Dan Daley had his article,
The Honorable Ari Abraham Porth, published in the Judge’s Corner section of the May 2020 issue of the Broward County Bar Association Barrister. The article is on page 17. Daley is the Corporate Counsel to
13th Floor Homes. He is also a Member of the Florida House of Representatives from District 97 (Northwest Broward County).

Chrystal Robinson has joined
Kelley Kronenberg in West Palm Beach as an attorney. Robinson focuses her practice on insurance defense litigation and business/commercial matters.

Nadine Mathieu has joined
Kelley Kronenberg as an attorney in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office where she assists in handling matters related to First Party Insurance Defense Litigation.
Melissa Usher has joined
Kelley Kronenberg in West Palm Beach as an associate where she assists in handling matters related to First and Third Party Insurance Defense Litigation and Civil Litigation.

Payal Salzburg (J.D. 2008), a partner of Laredo & Smith LLP, signed on to assist doctors and nurses with patient discharges and escorts at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she spends as many as 30 hours volunteering during this crisis.

Robert Solomon (J.D. 2006) and
Ariel Saban (J.D. 2006) of
Saben + Solomon in Plantation, rented a food truck to deliver lunches to police officers and public servants. As a result of their efforts, they have served over 700 hot meals to workers on the frontlines and are even receiving donations from others in the community to expand their impact. "The food truck is something we would like to continue doing even after the country reopens," said Soloman. "By bringing awareness to our cause it has brought in donations from various local businesses which will enable us to continue giving back." Hear their story as reported by Local10News

Jordan Weinkle (J.D. 2014) left his Hollywood law practice at
Weinkle Abergel Law Group PLLC, to volunteer for five weeks in the fight against COVID-19. As an infantry officer with the Florida Army National Guard, he assisted with testing sites and general logistics for emergency and medical supplies.
