NSU Ranked #1 in FL for Health Law and

#2 in Florida for Legal Research and Writing

Shepard Broad College of Law Health Law program has been ranked 1st in Florida, 56th nationally and the Legal Research and Writing program is ranked 2nd in Florida and 20th nationally by U.S. News & World Report . Schools in the specialty rankings are ranked based solely on the number of nominations received from U.S. law school faculty who teach in that specialty.

These successes are due to the teaching, scholarship, and broad interdisciplinary engagement of the NSU Law faculty and staff and NSU leadership. ILSA Journal of International & Comparative Law Symposium: Global Responses to Gun Violence and its Regulatory Effect on Society

The NSU Law ILSA Journal of International and Comparative Law hosted a half-day symposium on the global responses to gun violence and its regulatory effect on society on Friday, March 25, 2019. More than 90 individuals were in attendance.

The presentations and panel discussions were wide ranging and highly spirited. The panelists agreed that the problem of gun violence does not have one solution and that no single regulation, no matter how comprehensive, will solve all issues involved. Dean Khan noted that “gun violence is a symptom of many other issues within our country, states and communities. Keeping guns out of the hands of those that intend to do harm was also an overarching theme to the morning’s discussion.” Full Press Release

Successful Public Interest Law Society Auction

The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) hosted the 26th annual auction on March 14, 2019. With all the generous contributions, the event raised over $13,000 for the Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship. PILS honored Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Inc., NSU Law Alumni Pamela Flores, Esq., NSU Law student Samantha Gozlan and NSU Law Professor Michael Richmond for their continued support and dedication to our community. Information about applying to the Rebecca Knox Public Interest Fellowship and the five other fellowships are posted in this newsletter and with the NSU Law Public Interest Programs .

04-02-19 Sexual Harassment, Title VII, Title IX, and Everything in Between

The NSU community will be hosting a Sexual Assault Title IX presentation that will cover the perspectives on sexual harassment in the legal profession and the role of Title VII and Title IX in maintaining harassment-free law schools. Panelists include law school faculty and practicing attorneys. In addition, NSU’s Title IX staff will also be available to share NSU’s approach to Title IX compliance and sexual harassment prevention. They will also be available to answer questions.

NSU Law will be hosting a seminar sponsored by AGED, Inc. The topic, “Navigating Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid”, will include training on government benefits and pooled special needs trusts for professionals, supplemental security income and Medicaid, Medicaid programs for persons with disabilities, and ABLE accounts.

04-11-19 Law, Culture , & Context For Creative Works in Emerging Media - Presented by Dean Garon

This discussion will explore how 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, social media, and other emerging technologies provide new media for artists to explore the limits of culture and society. The talk will highlight experiments in new media and legal and cultural implications for these new works and their authors. RSVP

Red Tide, Green Algae, Drilling Bans and More: Post – Election Environmental and Land Use Law Landscape

The seminar will feature lawyers and other speakers from south Florida and around the state, addressing environmental law changes resulting from the November 2018 Florida Constitutional Amendments, current issues involving south Florida’s water pollution problems, recent and pending legislative, rule and policy changes coming from Washington and Tallahassee. Speakers will emphasize land use and environmental issues impacting Florida’s coasts.

ABA NAAC Moot Court Teams regional Semi-Finalists and Finalists

The NSU Law Moot Court Teams traveled to Washington DC to compete against 32 other law schools from around the country with decisive wins over LSA Law, Georgetown Law and CUA Columbus. Both teams had top brief scores, and one team received the 5th Best Brief Award. We are so proud of the effort and hard work by these students.

NSU Law Community Partnership with The Greater Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce

Professor Steven Kass with NSU Berger Entrepreneur Law Clinic students Deion Benjamin, Christopher Gonzalez, and Michael Page were thanked by The Greater Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce at their March community meeting attended by 300 community members. President of the Chamber Diane Grant recognized the students for their efforts in reviewing and revising the bylaws and also preparing a memorandum of law on procedural requirements. Professor Steven Kass presented the amended bylaw revisions at the membership meeting.

NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Summer Fellowships provide law students with an opportunity to earn compensation for dedicating their summer to public service. NSU Shepard Broad College of Law offers six different summer fellowship funding sources to students who wish to work with a public interest or government organization:

1.      The Christopher T. Byrd Environmental Law Fellowship;

2.      The Ferroli Family Public Interest Law Fellowship;

3.      The Martin A. Feinrider Summer Fellowship for International Human Rights;

4.      The Ovid and Clare Lewis Public Interest Fellowship;

5.      The Public Service Summer Fellowship; and

6.      The Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Summer Fellowship.

1977

The Honorable Joel T. Lazzarus has joined the panel of Mediar, Inc . During his time as a County Court Judge, Lazzarus presided over more than 900 jury trial. His accomplishments include receipt of the prestigious Ford Award as the Outstanding County Court Judge in Florida in 2010. He is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Circuit Civil Mediator and a Qualified Arbitrator.

 

1980

Eunice Baros recently participated in a humanitarian mission to Guatemala to bring water filters, blankets, and solar-operated lights to the remote village of Osuna for the descendants of Maya peoples who were affected by a recent volcano. She traveled with 20 others from South Florida as part of a project from the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, which partnered with the Jewish community in Guatemala City and Cadena, a committee of volunteers who help in national emergencies. The U.S. delegation also met with representatives of Guatemala’s congress, the country’s first lady, Patricia Marroquin, and attended the opening of Casa Shalom (House of Peace), a school for teenage indigenous students whose studies include working with local business people to learn trades.

The Honorable Lucy Chernow Brown 1982 of JAMS-Mediator & Arbitrator spoke on “The Do’s and Don’ts of Mediation — Insider Tips from Top Mediators,” at a Palm Beach County Bar YLS Sidebar Series.

1991

Steven “Steve” Clarfield has joined the firm of Lesser Lesser Landy & Smith . Clarfield will be working primarily out of the Boca Raton office and will be handling cases throughout Florida. Steve will concentrate his practice in personal injury, wrongful death litigation, and product liability cases including automobile liability, medical malpractice, and premises liability.

1992

Robin Rubens has joined the Miami office of Berger Singerman   as a partner on the Business Reorganization Team and the Dispute Resolution Team. Rubens specializes in handling business restructurings, commercial loan workouts and complex commercial litigation.

1993

Neal I. Sklar of the Miami office of Peckar & Abramson has been named to the board of directors of the Latin Builders Association. Sklar’s primary area of practice is focused on the representation of general contractors, construction managers and infrastructure contractors in a variety of construction related matters.

Stephen Zaccor has joined The Blaut Weiss Law Group as an associate. Stephen brings to the firm more than twenty years of legal experience as a Personal Injury trial attorney, a former Broward County civil judge, and a former Florida Assistant State Attorney in the Vehicular Homicide and Homicide Trial Units. His practice will be focused as a plaintiff’s Personal Injury attorney for cases involving wrongful death; traumatic brain injuries; drunk driving; car, truck, boating, biking, and pedestrian accidents; and firearms-related incidents.

2000

Jason Winn has been appointed to the Corporate Advisory Board of Canbiola, Inc. Winn is an active proponent for chronic pain management and tissue healing solutions. His current legal work includes areas affecting health care practitioners and dealings with licensed health care providers.

 

2003

Michele A. Lo Presti-Wouters has joined the Miami office of Chartwell Law  as a partner. Her practice is focused on insurance coverage defense, representing both domestic and international insurance carriers, directly and through third-party administrators.

2005

Nicolette Douglas is an Agency Attorney for the New York City Fire D epartment . Among the many facets of this exciting position, she regularly conducts investigations of alleged Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) violations and manages a large caseload of investigations involving complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation. She also performs compliance inspections of firehouses all over the city. Douglas shares that one of the benefits of working for FDNY is participating in a program called "Firefighter for a Day" where members step into the shoes of a Firefighter for an entire day. She now has a new appreciation for anyone entering a burning building to put out a fire or save a life.

William N. Lazarchick, Jr. announces the opening of his Marital and Family Law firm William N. Lazarchick, Jr., P.A. in Juno Beach, FL. He is a founding member and Past President of The Susan Greenberg Family Law American Inn of Court of the Palm Beaches. A family law attorney, Lazarchick is known for his proactive approach to divorce and family law who uses his background in Behavioral Psychology to guide his clients in reaching the best possible outcome whether through settlement negotiations or litigation.

2009

Jessica M. Feingold will be speaking on April 2, 2019 at 1:30 pm at the Cannabis Conference 2019  in Las Vegas, NV. Her talk will be “Learn to Navigate an Acquisition Deal.” Feingold is Senior Legal Counsel for Stem Holdings, Inc. and its operational affiliates. Jessica focuses her practice on regulatory compliance, lobbying for proposed marijuana rules and legislative reform, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, labor and employment, land use and zoning and commercial real estate.

Chad Van Horn , founding attorney partner of Van Horn Law Group, P.A. , has been invited to speak at the American Bankruptcy Institute’s 2019 Annual Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C. in April. Van Horn will discuss hot-button issues surrounding the student loan debt crisis, as a speaker and moderator for a panel titled, “Let’s Talk Student Loans (But Not Undue Hardship): Solutions to Help Your Clients.”

Gregory R. Eisinger has become a partner at  Eisinger, Brown, Lewis, Frankel & Chaiet   in the Hollywood main office. He focuses his law practice on condominium, homeowners’ and  community association law , real estate transactions and development and litigation.

Jonathan D. Karp has joined the Leadership Council Southeast Florida Chapter of The Alzheimer’s Association . The council is a community-based group of professionals who help foster awareness of the disease and initiate events to raise money for research.  Karp is an associate at The Karp Law Firm , an elder law, estate planning and estate administration firm with offices in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Port St. Lucie, FL.

2017

Emma S. Meyerson has joined Kelley Kronenberg in the firm’s West Palm Beach office. Meyerson assists in handling matters related to Insurance Defense Litigation, General Liability, First Party Property, Commercial Litigation and Criminal Defense.

2018

In Memoriam

Matthew Fiorello , age 36, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, passed away tragically and unexpectedly on March 8, 2019. He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 2008. Matt was a partner in the firm of Peterson Bernard in their Stuart office. Before joining the firm, Fiorello spent three years as an assistant public defender in Broward County, where he handled cases ranging from misdemeanor to first-degree felonies. He was also the lead singer of the all-lawyer tribute band, Disbarred . Matt is survived by his loving wife Rachel, two young daughters, his beloved dog, and many family members and friends. A Memorial Service was held at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home in Jupiter, FL on Thursday, March 14, 2019. A go fund me account has been created to assist Rachel and the children. You may visit it at https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-fiorello-family .

Edwin “Ted” Mortell III , age 54, of Stuart, Florida, passed away tragically and unexpectedly on March 8, 2019. He earned his JD from NSU Shepard Broad College of Law in 1989. Ted was the manager of Peterson Bernard’s Stuart office. He excelled in construction-defect and wrongful-death cases. Ted leaves a widow, Melissa, and three sons, all recently graduated from college. Visitation was held on March 14, 2019. Burial mass was held on March 15, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Stuart. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in loving memory of Ted can be made to The Coastal Conservation Association, CCA Florida - ( www.ccaflorida.org ) or The Pine School, Re: Development Office, 12350 SE Federal Highway, Hobe Sound, FL 33455.
