Highlights from the 2018-2019 Academic Year

On August 14, NSU Law will welcome the class of JD 2022. Even as we gear up for the coming year, we are delighted to share the many accomplishments from the past year:
National Rankings
- NSU Law has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report with a Top 20 peer recognition for the Legal Research and Writing program, second in Florida.
- U.S. News and World Report has ranked NSU Law with a national ranking at 56 for the Health Care Law program, which places that program first in Florida.
- The ABA has changed its accreditation regulations and released national data on bar passage. NSU Law’s cumulative bar passage rate (measured after two years) is 93.3%, placing NSU Law among the top third (at 65th) in overall bar passage success among all U.S. law schools.
Law School Expansion:
To sustain the law school, expand its impact, and engage in the changing nature of the legal profession, NSU Law has become a leader across all aspects of legal education.
- LL.M.: NSU Law has launched its first LL.M. program, with tracks for in-person coursework in each of the JD concentrations and an online track in the Intellectual Property, Cybersecurity, and Technology concentration.
- MS: NSU Law’s Master of Science in Law has become one of the five largest in the country, with four degree programs and over 200 students.
- BS (Paralegal): NSU Law now offers a Paralegal Studies major, minor, post-baccalaureate certificate.
- BS Minor: Beginning January 2020, NSU Law will offer a minor in Law, Science, and Technology earned from the Shepard Broad College of Law.
NSU Law continues to make an impact in the legal community locally, nationally and internationally.
- 80% of the Broward County Bar Association Executive Board and BCBA Young Lawyers Officers are NSU Law alumni.
- John M. Stewart (J.D. 1997) was elected the President of The Florida Bar.
- The Honorable Ariana Fajardo Orshan (JD 1996) was confirmed as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.
- Keith Sonderling (JD 2008) appointed to the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
- Michael Fischler (JD 1978) elected President of the Broward County Bar Association.
- Rebecca Spitzmiller (JD 1985) presented with an officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella.

The NSUcyberlaw Blog provides focus on the overlapping hot topics in law, technology, cybersecurity, privacy, free speech, media, and similar issues of interest. The blog is intended to bring together significant ideas and resources on the intersection of law, science, and technology, including all aspects of data privacy and intellectual property.
In the first month, the blog has featured information on cryptocurrency, data breaches, social media, FTC regulation, digital publishing, and protection of critical infrastructure. For more information, contact

On-Campus Interviews have increased 50% since 2016
|
|
Each Fall and Spring NSU Law’s Office of Career Services and Professional Development (OCS) hosts the On-Campus Interview Program (OCI). This recruiting program allows employers to interview preselected NSU Law students for summer associate, law clerk and permanent employment positions.
Through targeted marketing and employer outreach, NSU OCS has dramatically increased employer participation and student engagement by 50% over the past two years. Some notable additions to OCI include Cole, Scott & Kissane; Shook, Hardy and Bacon; Gray Robinson & Cole and Kelley Kronenberg. Rising 2L, 3L and 4L students are provided group and individual counseling to review their cover letters, resumes and to plan for summer and permanent employment. A practice interview program is also held in August with alumni serving as mock interviewers to assist students in preparing for OCI interviews.

8-7-19 The William A. Van Nortwick Appellate Workshop 2019
A CLE workshop presented by The Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar and hosted by NSU Shepard Broad College of Law.
This is a three-day intensive workshop focusing on the appellate process. In advance of the program, attendees will draft an appellate brief. The brief will be critiqued by appellate court judges and board-certified appellate practitioners. There will be small-group instruction on brief writing, including framing issues, drafting the statements of facts, and formulating arguments. In addition, participants will perform oral arguments.

8-5-19 to 8-9-19 Fifth Annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI)
The NSU Trial Association will host its fifth annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI) during the first week in August at NSU Law. TASI is a five-day course taught by NSU Law faculty and members of our litigation community. Students practice oral advocacy, trial skills, opening statements and closing arguments, direct and cross examination, and evidence law in a trial setting.
The immediate and overwhelming response to the request for judges for Friday, August 9, 2019 was fantastic. Thank you in advance to all the NSU Law alumni and local friends of NSU Law that volunteered.

NSU Law students and attorneys from the International Arbitration and Litigation community will gather to network. A panel of attorneys from the Miami International Arbitration Society and local law firms will discuss topics related to International Arbitration.

On Campus Interview (OCI) Fall 2019 - Student Information
|
|
NSU Law invites students to participate in our Fall 2019 On-Campus Interview Program (OCI), held between August 26 and November 1, 2019. OCI allows students to apply to government, public interest, and law firm employers for summer associate, law clerk, and permanent employment. Employers may also choose to participate in our Resume Collection Program. This program allows employers to receive resumes and application materials from students. The employers then have the opportunity to contact interested students directly to schedule interviews.
Bidding for the program began in

on July 15.
To prepare, students should review the employer list and schedule an appointment with a career advisor to have their resume reviewed and to discuss their bid list.

Rachael was the Chesterfield Smith Fellow with the Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. for the Summer of 2019. In her position as a law clerk with the Community Economic Development Unit, she assisted attorneys with legal services for non-profit organizations and affordable housing developers in low-income communities.
Rachael is a rising 3L, VP of the Association of Business Law Students, Treasurer of the Foreign Lawyers Association at NSU and Secretary of the Caribbean Law Students Association.

The Mission United Veterans Pro Bono Project at Broward Legal Aid was the main focus of Nabila's internship this summer. She was the Broward County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section 2019 fellow and the Ovid and Clare Lewis Public Interest fellow.
"It is an honor to assist U.S. military veterans and their families. I feel privileged to help those who have sacrificed so much for this country."
Nabila is a rising 2L and is chairperson of the SBA Elections Committee, VP of the Public Interest Law Society and Director of Programming for the Family Law Society.

Caitlin had the opportunity to work with the Broward County Public Schools Legal Department. Through her internship, she enhanced her writing and communication skills as well as her effective legal research on labor and employment law. Caitlin also participated in witness preparation for trial and attended the trial.
Caitlin is a rising 2L and VP of the National Security and Law Society, Director of Student Involvement with the Hispanic Student Bar Association and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Family Law Society as well as several other organizations.

The Rebecca Knox Public Interest Law Fellowship allowed Meagan to work this summer in the immigration unit at Legal Aid Service of Broward County.
"I was able to help assist the most vulnerable immigrants in Broward County. This experience was beyond rewarding, and made me realize that this was the type of law I want to pursue."
After earning
her LL.M. from Charles University, Meagan will receive her J.D. in December 2019. She is the VP of Finance for the Immigration Law Organization and a research assistant for Professor Michael Dale.

of Daytona Beach, is the chief assistant public defender of the Seventh Judicial Circuit. Dyer is reappointed to the Fifth District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission for a term ending July 1, 2023.
Judge Sandy Karlan
of the
Center for Conflict Resolution in Miami
won the Outstanding Champion for Children Award from Florida’s Children First. Judge Karlan is a certified mediator and is board certified by The Florida Bar in Marital and Family Law. She is member of the mediation panel and the commercial arbitration panel of the American Arbitration Association. She has mediated cases in the areas of family, bankruptcy and commercial contracts. Additionally she has served as an expert witness, a special magistrate on cases in the Complex Business Court Division as well as serving as a litigation consultant.

The Honorable Christopher C. Edwards is the Griffin Judicial Circuit Superior Court Chief Judge of Fayetteville, Georgia. Judge Edwards has been elected by the attorneys of Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties to serve on the Board of Governors of the 50,000-member State Bar of Georgia. He will serve in the Griffin Circuit, Post 2 seat on the Board. Judge Edwards was first elected to the Superior Court bench in 1998 and has been re-elected five times. He was previously a trial lawyer from 1986 to 1999 after serving as a prosecutor in the Brunswick Judicial Circuit from 1981 to 1986.

spoke at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American College of Coverage Counsel in Chicago about “How Great Minds Can Differ: Policyholder, Primary, and Excess Insurer Interests in Multi-State Litigation.” As founder and a shareholder of the firm, McIntosh has developed extensive personal experience in a wide range of areas—personal injury, product liability, commercial and professional negligence litigation, including legal, dental and medical malpractice defense, product liability and insurance coverage litigation—his current focus is on catastrophic damages and insurance coverage matters. Doug is a Chair of the Board of Governors of the Shepard Broad College of Law of Nova Southeastern University and has also served as chairperson of the Broward County Bar Association Professionalism Committee for many years.

He previously served a four-year term as Commissioner for the City of Parkland and is currently the Vice Mayor of Parkland.

Bascombe makes time in her busy practice to commit to pro bono community work due to her deep passion for helping local youth & families with legal and life matters. co-presented a course for The Broward County Bar Associations County Court Insurance Section. The program was titled
Ethics, The Attorney, and The Judge: "Can I ask a Judge to do that?"
and was a discussion on the relationship between the Bar Rules of Professional Conduct and the Judicial Canons, specifically focusing on interaction between attorney and judge.

Kyle S. Roberts

has been appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the Broward County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section. Roberts is responsible for assisting in handling matters related to Third Party Insurance Defense and General Liability for the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office.

Brandon Esquenazi
has joined
Kelley Kronenberg
in their Fort Lauderdale location. He assists in handling matters related to Third Party Insurance Defense and General Liability. Esquenazi has also served as a Legal Liaison with Settlement and Litigation departments where he negotiated with medical providers to procure reductions to further the ability to settle cases.

is now a member of the Palm Beach County Bar Association. Robinson’s practice focuses on insurance defense, declaratory judgment actions, and complex commercial matters.
