Please join us in congratulating 192 JD and 61 MS students who will graduating with their respective degrees from NSU Law. Commencement is a recognition and celebration of academic achievement and the lasting contributions that students have made to the university. In addition, NSU Law will be recognizing the three NSU Paralegal Studies and Paralegal Certificate Program students at their undergraduate commencement on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 2:30 p.m.
Members of the JD Class of 2019 provided more than 10,019 hours of pro bono service to the local community. Sixty-One candidates participated in the Pro Bono Honor Program, earning Gold (300+ hours each), Silver (125-299 hours each) and Bronze (50-124 hours each) honors.

Alumna Hilary Creary took the STUEY university-wide honor as Alumni of the Year. Hilary
received her B.A. (1993) and J.D. (1997) from Nova Southeastern University. She practices in all areas of family law, and is also a Guardian ad Litem and Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator. She is currently a member of the Florida Bar Board of Governors representing the 17
th
Circuit, and has held leadership positions in multiple voluntary Bar Associations including T. J. Reddick Bar Association, and the Broward County Women Lawyers Association. She currently also serves on the Boards of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, the Caribbean Bar Association, and is a founding member and Legal Advisor to the Jamaican Women of Florida organization, which is dedicated to educating and empowering Jamaican Women. She also believes in supporting her larger community and received the 2018 Florida Bar President’s Award for Pro Bono Service in the 17
th
Judicial Circuit for her tireless representation of clients who could not otherwise afford legal services. In her “spare” time, Ms. Creary is the legal advisor to the Greater Pompano Beach Margate and Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce.

NSU Law students Kelly DesRosiers, Stacey Marquez and Jeremiah Romano along with coach C. Wes Byrum (JD 2017) earned the National Champion title at the Show Me Challenge Voir Dire Competition at the University of Missouri Kansas City. Jeremiah Romano earned Best Overall Advocate at the 2019 competition.

NSU Law students Hanna Bez, Dana Weinstein and Olestine Turenne with coaches Professor Marilyn Uzdavines and Professor Donna Litman earned Third Place overall in the 2019 Eighth Annual L. Edward Bryant, Jr. National Health Law Transactional Moot Court Competition.
The competition was held at the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.

The panel of judges followed up Oral Arguments with a question and answer session with students and alumni in the courtroom.

3rd Annual Legal Master's Degree Conference

Shepard Broad College of Law hosted the 3rd Annual Legal Master’s Degree Conference on March 28-30, 2019. More than 75 law school deans, faculty members, and administrators from across the United States gathered for engaging and relevant discussions concerning the present and future of graduate-level legal education for non-lawyers. Topics presented included engaging faculty and students, focused learning outcomes and assessment for non-JD courses, curriculum planning, branding and digital marketing, student services, and the future of legal education.

The topic, “Navigating Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,” was an in-depth training designed to cover the basics of Social Security Disability, Medicare, and Medicaid and its various programs for the aging / disabled population.

Also in April, NSU Law hosted a panel discussion that explored sexual harassment within the educational setting and the workplace. Panelists included Laura Bennett, NSU Title IX Coordinator, Scott Limmer, Esq. (JD 1993), Cathleen Scott, Esq. and Professor Michael Masinter. The panel was moderated by Desmond Daniels, NSU Title IX Investigator and Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
The panel discussed the impact of Title IX and Title VII in these environments, as well as the opportunities which exist for law students and practicing legal professionals to create and sustain discrimination-free academic and workplace environments.

06-14-19 Law Connect Plus - New Considerations in Immigration Practice
The Program and presentations will focus on the latest changes in immigration policies and how these changes affect immigration practice. Presenters will focus on a wide range of issues relating to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), employment based petitions, family based immigrant petitions, citizenship, and refugee and asylum petitions. The program and presenters will outline the latest challenges in these areas and make recommendations on how best to handle these challenges.

Their panel presentation took place at the fourth National People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference at American University Washington College of Law (March 21-24, 2019). The panel focused on the creation of a Legal Writing Pipeline called WAR – Writing as a Resistance. The purpose of the pipeline is to foster a conducive writing environment for women of color interested in teaching Legal Writing and Skills courses. The panel also celebrated and honored the launch of the social media movement @blackandbluebook on twitter. The social media movement will highlight and provide resources for legal scholars of color.

The Broward County Women Lawyers' Association (BCWLA) presented three NSU Law JD students with a gold (Alvarez) and silver (Gozlan and Ciccosanti) scholarship awards in the April ceremony. This scholarship is presented to 2L or 3L female or male NSU Law students that exemplify the ideals of an individual who can strike the perfect balance between their legal studies, legal practice or current career (if applicable), legal community involvement, civic involvement and familial relationships.

NSU University School Shepard Broad College of Law Fellowship Launched
|
|
The inaugural cohort of the NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Fellowship is composed of NSU University School students who share a passion for law, civil rights, and social justice. The students participated in a unique learning experience that grants them access to NSU Law Moot Court society mentors, experienced legal professionals, and the real-world applications of their classroom education.
The Law Fellows were given a Supreme Court case dealing with Constitutional Law and privacy issues and were asked to write a brief. The briefs were edited under the guidance of NSU Professor Heather Baxter (JD 2000) and the NSU Law Moot Court society mentors. After participating in information sessions on oral advocacy and argument, the Law Fellows delivered their brief during a final presentation where they argued their positions in front of the NSU Law Moot Court society.

. In his new role, Rosen will be responsible for all strategic development, brand innovation and leadership initiatives for the famed tiki brand’s expanding portfolio. Rosen will also oversee the continued growth of Trader Vic’s Mexican inspired brand, Señor Pico, with the new location set to open in Dubai later this year.

discussed the latest legal update regarding the thousands of Essure cases that are filed across the country. Susen is board certified in Civil Trial Law and serves as lead counsel for the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee for the Essure mass tort litigation and was the first to file a lawsuit against Bayer in this case, having overcome the device’s pre-market approval.

One with the New York Giants, another with the New England Patriots, and lastly with the Buffalo Bills.
