NSU Law Receives $1 Million Grant to Establish Innovative Clinic for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

The Shepard Broad College of Law received a $1 million grant from The Taft Foundation to establish an innovative clinical program. The new clinic will address the legal needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (AIDD) and their families. The NSU AIDD Law Clinic will launch in the fall of 2016 and begin enrolling third-year students to staff it by January 2017.
"Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a myriad of legal issues that can impede their independence and infringe on their individual rights," said Jon Garon, J.D., dean of NSU's Shepard Broad College of Law. "This is an exciting opportunity for us to serve this vastly underserved population by partnering with The Taft Foundation to provide pro bono legal services." |

NSU Students Advance to Quarter Finals
Nelson Mandela International Negotiations Competition
The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) hosted a negotiation competition in Baltimore Maryland in March. NSU Students Mallorie Milord, Micheline Gros-Jean, Nahum Joseph, and Kristina Hornsby competed with law students from across the country. Nahum Joseph and Kristina Hornsby advance to the quarter final round. The NSU BLSA team thanks all who assisted them, especially Professor Jane Cross and Dean Garon for their support.

NSU Health Law Students Compete at
Loyola University Chicago School of Law
Alana Cano, Sean Linder, and Georgia Nicolle Pons, represented NSU Law on March 18, 2016 in the Edward Bryant, Jr. National Health Law Transaction Competition in Chicago. This is the fourth year the law school has participated in this competition.
Matthew Horton (JD 2013), a health law attorney, and adjunct professor Gerald Morris (JD 1977) helped prepare our team in December by discussing "hot topics" with them. Student Offers Inexpensive Solution to Animal Cruelty Issue with Florida Spiny Lobster
Christopher Hessen had an article published in The Florida Bar Animal Law Committee Animal Law Newsletter. The article, titled The Florida Spiny Lobster Harvest: Is there a better way?, spoke on the Florida spiny lobster and the unnecessarily cruel method divers use to kill them. The article is a shortened version of his Animal Law Legislation Seminar paper and offers an inexpensive solution to humanely hunting the animal.

Three Dual Degree Students Contribute to NITA Blog, The Legal Advocate
Three NSU Law Dual-Degree students have recently published articles on the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's (NITA) blog, The Legal Advocate: Andree Quaresima, Marina Tous Clots, and Tereza Horáková, in collaboration with Professor Michael Dale. These students have contributed three of the five articles written by an NSU Law student for The Legal Advocate over the past two years.

Winners Chosen for the 2016 "Write a Letter, Change the World" MLK Day Letter Writing Competition
In February 2016, many NSU Law students submitted letters addressing important social justice issues, raising awareness of an important issues, and offering a strategy for solving the problem. The first place winner is 1L John Poland who has earned a $400 cash prize, a plaque commemorating this award, and his submission posted on the law school website. The second place winner is Evelyn Batista who has earned a $100 cash prize and a plaque commemorating this award. Both students are in the part-time program and are invited to attend an awards dinner with Dean Garon and other judges.

Health Policy Attorney Daniel Dawes to Discuss ObamaCare at NSU
Nova Southeastern University will host attorney and NSU alumnus Daniel Dawes as part of Farquhar Honors College's Distinguished Speaker Series on Wednesday, April 13. Dawes is the executive director of health policy and external affairs at the Morehouse School of Medicine and a lecturer at Morehouse's Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine. He founded and chaired the National Working Group on Health Disparities and Health Reform and is the co-founder of the Health Equity Leadership and Exchange Network. Dawes is an instrumental player in a large coalition of organizations that helped shape the Affordable Care Act (or ObamaCare), and will explain the law through a health equity lens, focusing on what it is intended to do and how it affects various groups.

was invited to appear on Dateline Health, a public service show that airs on Broward Education Communication Network (BECON). Cassidy spoke on behalf of NSU College of Law regarding veterans' services through the Veterans Law Clinic and Legal Incubator program. The episode is slated to air March 28 - April 10, 2016. Olympia Duhart and Amanda Foster Lead Presentation on LRW Pedagogy at Capital Area Legal Writing Conference
Professors Olympia Duhart and Amanda Foster presented March 12, 2016 at the Capital Area Legal Writing Conference at the University of Maryland Carey Law School. The two joined Professor Hugh Mundy (The John Marshall Law School) in a presentation about teaching methods to legal writing faculty from around the country. The talk was entitled: "It's Alive! Breathing New Life into Old Topics." The professors also shared their specific teaching tips on revitalizing common topics through the use of smart phones in the classroom, the staging of an "LRW Lounge," and the incorporation of celebrity news stories in class.

Professor and Dean Elena Langan
published an article titled, The Elimination of Child "Custody" Litigation: Using Business Branding Techniques to Transform Social Behavior, 36:2 Pace L. Rev. 101 (2016).
In addition, Elena is on a panel for the 2016 Southeastern Association of Law Schools, Workshop on Legal Education Discussion Group titled, God Created the World out of Nothing in Six Days: I'm Only the Academic Dean. Finally, she was selected to serve on the Association of American Law Schools, Associate Deans Section, Planning Committee, which is working on the 2017 AALS conference program for the section.

Her piece honoring Professor Michael A. Olivas (currently serving as Interim President of the University of Houston) entitled The Olivas Guide: Navigating Through the Morass of In-State Residency Requirements for Higher Education was accepted for inclusion as a chapter in the upcoming book Law Professor and Accidental Historian: The Scholarship of Michael Olivas (Ediberto Roman, ed., Carolina Academic Press forthcoming 2016). She has accepted an offer of publication from Catholic University Law Review for her law review article entitled "Tears in Heaven: Religiously and Culturally Sensitive Laws for Preventing the Next Pandemic", 66 Cath. L. Rev. __ (forthcoming 2016-17) (co-authored). She has submitted the manuscript for the 3rd edition of the casebook entitled Florida Wills, Trusts, and Estates: Cases and Materials (Carolina Academic Press 3d ed. forthcoming 2016) (with Rodriguez-Dod, Richmond, Litman & Maurer).

Director of the Center for the Study of Youth Policy Judge Frank Orlando was named to the 2016 University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance Alumni Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the profession and to the children.
