It Can't be December!?!

Oh, yes it can! It's here already but it won't stay for long. Like all the other months before it, December will whisk by in a flash. December is an exciting month for most although it can be a difficult time for some. It is the end of the year and the end of the fall term. It is a time to look forward to what is ahead in the new year.

Are you ready for 2025?

"It is December and nobody asked if I was ready." ~ Sarah Kay

BLOG POST

Once again, this month's blog is not a blog! We are featuring an interview with Joy Cooper, First Year College Advisor at Nevada State University! You can read it here!

NDE Staff Professional Development

Our fall NDE PD is an online NCCEP Study Lab course. The deadline for completion is January 31st.

NDE Spring Training

January 27 & 28

Mark your calendars for our next staff get together for the NDE Spring Training. This training will be held on the CSN West Charleston campus. Exact times and the agenda are TBD.

NSHE Team Building Day

January 28 & 29

Once again the NSHE team will be gathering immediately following the NDE training for their annual Team Building Day. The highlight of this professional development opportunity, other than spending time all together (a rare treat) is that our sessions are lead by team members. Our staff have a variety of expertise and this is an opportunity to share and learn from each other.

NDE Spring Planning Day

On December 2nd we held our annual Spring Planning Day where the staff came together virtually to fill up the spring calendar with assorted services and important dates. We already have a calendar filled with interesting and helpful services to kick off the spring term! It doesn't get much more exciting than that!

The 1st Annual Nevada FAFSA Challenge!

A new and exciting opportunity has just been announced. NSHE along with partners at CCSD, CSN, UNR, UNLV, the Treasurer's Office, and the Nevada Association of Financial Aid Administrators (NAFAA) have organized the inaugural Nevada FAFSA Challenge which is a new FAFSA completion competition for the state. The winner will be the high school with the greatest increase in FAFSA completion rate, year-over-year. The winning high school will received $1000, a banner displaying their achievement, and of course, bragging rights! Schools that achieve 100% completion will be recognized at an upcoming NSHE Board of Regents meeting. All of our GEAR UP high schools are eligible to complete in this challenge! If you need more information, you can email Janet, jstake@nshe.nevada.edu.

Welcome Arlene!

We want to take a moment to welcome Arlene Herrara! Arlene is the new GEAR UP Research Administrator for the NSHE subaward. She is located in the NSHE EPSCoR office in Las Vegas. She will be helping with all grant fiscal and reporting matters. Arlene is a nearly lifelong resident of Nevada. She comes to us with a background in non-profit grant management. She is also a graduate of UNR. Arlene likes to keep moving because when she is not working she likes to take long walks, explore Nevada gems, and travel as much as possible.

Welcome to the GEAR UP team, Arlene! We are so happy you are here with us!

New NSHE Pathways Posters

By now, each of our high schools and colleges should have received a new NSHE pathways poster that lists all of the potential areas of study a student can undertake at an NSHE institution. This is an update to a similar poster project we did during the last grant. From Accounting to World Languages, students can find a lot of options to pursue their interests. Kudos to Ana Hernandez-Wong, our Communications Specialist/student worker for her work on this project!

You can get a better glimpse of the poster below.
