January ~ New Month, New Year!

January marks the start of a new year - a new chapter full of possibilities. It's time to set goals, take on challenges, and build momentum for the months ahead. January is a clean slate, an opportunity to refocus energy, welcome a fresh perspective, and align our personal and professional aspirations. As the days grow longer and warmer, we can harness the spirit of renewal to inspire growth, collaboration, and positivity. Every step forward counts, and together we can make this year our most successful and rewarding for our students and our team!

"The ticking clock of the New Year reminds us: time is not to be spent, but invested wisely in purpose and meaning." ~ Aloo Denish Obiero

BLOG POST

This month's blog is not a blog! We are featuring an interview with Kat Burdick, First Year College Advisor at UNLV! You can read it here!

NDE Staff Training

January 27 & 28

The upcoming training will be held at CSN West Charleston, Student Union ballroom. We will be meeting both days 9:30-2:30. Lunch will be provided on both days as well - Yum!

NSHE Team Building Day

January 28 & 29

The annual NSHE Team Building Day will be held immediately following the NDE training on January 28th at CSN West Charleston and again on January 29th at the NSHE office on Maryland Parkway. Several interesting activities and professional development sessions are planned. We will have academic advising sessions led by Kelly Briggs, FYCA at GBC. Kelly came to us with over 10 years experience in this area. We will also feature a financial literacy session from TMCC's FYCA, Jairon Castellanos Boteo. He is current taking a financial literacy certification program. One of the goals of the Team Building Day is to share in the assorted expertise that the team has and learn from each other while also enjoying our limited time together.

Welcome Back!

We are about to launch into the spring term! We already have several exciting and impactful services and events planned. In addition to our regular College Corners and Power Hours, in the coming weeks, we have Mad City Money events planned at most of our schools. This is budgeting/lifestyle/adulting event that is highly interactive and a bit of an eye-opener for students. We also have ACT Boot Camps coming up as well. These services help prepare students to take the ACT. Over the years, these opportunities have grown quite a bit as more and more students take advantage of this opportunity. Come March, we will once again have the annual College and Career Fairs at each of our schools. These are probably our largest and most exciting events as they are shared not only with each other and our students but also with several members of our local communities. Stay tuned for confirmed dates for the above mentioned activities.

Dependable Strengths

Are you familiar with Dependable Strengths? If not, you will be soon! The Center for Dependable Strengths offers training in a novel approach to working with students as well as each other, building on the strengths and talents of the individual. NSHE College Coordinator, Jana Burd will be taking this certification program beginning this month and will share some of what the program is about during the NDE training later this month. Then at a later date, she will facilitate a professional development session for the team which is designed to increase our potential for success!

FAFSA Events!

Now that the holidays are behind us, and the FAFSA was released as promised, we anticipate holding a few FAFSA events to assist students and families in this process over the course of the spring term. These events are happening at our high schools and our colleges. Often, completing the FAFSA can be confusing or overwhelming for both students and their parent(s). We can rest assured that the help received during these events is very much appreciated. Even though the FAFSA has been streamlined and it is not as cumbersome as it used to be, it can still be a challenge for some, but with the help of our knowledgeable staff and a few experts on hand, it can be accomplished. Thank you for helping our students take the next step beyond high school and into their future!
