NDE's Spring PD

In response to specific requests, NDE's virtual professional development session scheduled for earlier this month was cancelled. In lieu of this session, NDE is contracting with a vendor to provide a course on Time Management. This is a topic that several staff members requested. Information regarding the course will be forthcoming. All staff should complete the training course by June 30th.

SSA Summer Bridge

July 16-18

We are trying something new this year for our Summer Bridge programs. NDE has contracted with the Student Success Agency (SSA) to host our program. Although typically in the past we have held these events in the high schools, this event will be held off-site and out of state! Students and some staff will be traveling to Prescott, AZ for this event! We're excited to learn more about it! NSHE's Jana Burd and TMCC's Jairon Castellanos Boteo will be joining in the fun with the students!

NDE Fall Training

August 7 & 8

Reno

In just a few months we will be kicking off Year 6 beginning with our annual NDE Fall Training in Reno. The dates have been set although the location is still TBD. For those traveling to Reno, this is the same week as the very popular, Hot August Nights event so you may want to book your travel early!

GEAR UP NV Out and About!

There is so much to do not only in Las Vegas, but all around the state! Nevada GEAR UP students had opportunities to travel locally through different field trips offered this year. Our First-Year College Advisors provided campus tours at our NSHE institutions, collaborating with various offices to provide GEAR UP students with personalized information and resources. Along with making these college visits happen, our GEAR UP Specialists also collaborated with school staff and community partners to offer additional field trips to other local places like Ichthyosaur Park, Capriotti's Headquarters, Smith Center of Performing Arts, Red Rock, Springs Preserve, OmegaMart, Bellagio Conservatory, Neon Museum, Illuminarium, Railroad Museum, Hoover Dam, and the Bodies Exhibit. Not only were we busy in the classroom, but outside the classroom too!

Recurring Services Summary for Year 5

We have officially wrapped services for the 2023-2024 school year! Our college corners had significant improvement as students looked forward to asking questions and participating in activities provided by the NSHE GEAR UP team and guests during these drop-in times at the high schools. Scheduled Power Hour presentations also provided college and career exploration opportunities for students, with guest speakers from Boys and Girls Club, Nevada State Board of Architecture, Inc Marks the Spot Tattoo Academy, various law enforcement offices, multiple military branches, and more! Nevada GEAR UP First-Year College Advisors, College Coordinator, and Specialists worked hard all year to provide these recurring services and have already begun planning for next year. We can't wait to share what we have in store! Next up: summer programs!

NCCEP National Conference!

Registration in OPEN! It's time to start planning for attending the NCCEP National Conference to be held in Washington, DC, July 21-24! This year NCCEP is celebrating its 25th anniversary so this is bound to be an extra special conference. As always, it will be a great opportunity to meet GEAR UP colleagues from all across the country. You can look forward to amazing keynote speakers and a large selection of breakout sessions. In addition, you can visit the exhibit hall and meet with a large number of vendors that can help your program with many different areas of services. Nevada will be well represented by Jana Burd, Jairon Castellanos Boteo, and Janet Stake are scheduled to present in three different sessions during the conference!! We are hoping to see you there!
