Welcome November!

It's time to get cozy as the temperatures outside cool in November. That means it's time again to enjoy warm drinks and fuzzy blankets too. Of course as the holidays approach, we also take some time to reflect on the past year and realize all the things we have to be thankful for in our lives, including our friends and families, our colleagues, our students, and the important work that we do everyday.

“Don't wait until the fourth Thursday in November, to sit with family and friends to give thanks. Make every day a day of Thanksgiving!” ~ Charmaine J. Forde

BLOG POST

This month's blog is not a blog! We are featuring an interview with Meshanna Merrow, GEAR UP Specialist at Mineral County High School! You can read it here!

NDE Staff Professional Development

November 18

Our fall NDE professional development session has been turned into an opportunity to take an NCCEP Study Labs course. Please review the available courses and let Josh know your selection(s). Sometime in the near future, NDE will be giving us the deadline for course completion.

Spring Planning Session

Monday, December 2

It won't be long and the team will be meeting virtually to begin the planning of the spring term. It seems like we just started the fall term but we try to plan ahead to ease scheduling and make sure we are providing all the services we need to provide at each school. This is a half-day activity. Although the calendar invites have not gone out as yet, it typically runs from 8:00 - 12:00 noon. Stay tuned for more information to follow.

NCCEP Academy

GEAR UP West Success!

Last month, the 18th annual GEAR UP West conference was held in Albuquerque, NM. This conference has been a part of the GEAR UP Nevada program for quite some time and this year was no different. Nevada had a large contingent of staff from NDE, NSHE, and the school districts attend. The conference highlighted some remarkable young people as keynote speakers and the audience got to enjoy several cultural dances and demonstrations from local cultural groups. Of course there were several interesting breakout sessions and vendor displays too. Congrats to Vannessa Apo and Amanda Tapia, GEAR UP Specialists from Bonanza High School, for presenting at the conference. Their topic was Building Bridges: Strengthening GEAR UP Partnerships with Community Stakeholders.

New NSHE Intro Events!

This year, we did things a little differently to (re)introduce our GEAR UP students and families to our team at Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and the resources that they provide. Over two weeks, we hosted GEAR UP For Your Future family events at each school district that we serve. Students were able to learn about scholarships, receive assistance with FSA IDs, and submit college applications, while families learned more about what GEAR UP does and how we can support students all the way through their first year of college in Nevada. So much information was provided, as well as food and giveaways, from our NSHE institutions. Each event was designed differently to better fit the needs of the school district and families in the area. The NSHE GEAR UP team did an amazing job working with over 100 attendees! Special thanks to the GEAR UP Specialists that helped to make these events happen as well!

ASPIRE is Getting Slimy!

This October, UNLV GEAR UP ASPIRE built connections through so many community events! Our annual favorites are Dinoween with the Las Vegas Natural History Museum and Monster Mash at the College of Southern Nevada Henderson campus. We saw over 2,500 students and families over two days. At Monster Mash, we shared a coding Halloween activity and created slime for the LVNHM Creepy Crawly Carnival event.

Good-Bye to Meshanna!

We will be saying good-bye to Meshanna Merrow, the GEAR UP Specialist at Mineral County High School, in early December. Meshanna returned to GEAR UP after being the MCHS staff member for the last grant cycle. Unfortunately, she is unable to continue in her current role at this time.

We wish you all the best, Meshanna!

So Long Destiney!

We also need to wish Destiney Duff, the GEAR UP facilitator at Pahrump Valley High School, a fond farewell too. Destiney has been a part of the program for several years now. She has moved on to do her student teaching as part of her studies. We wish Destiney the best of luck in this phase of her program! Thank you for all of your help with the many GEAR UP events!
