Greetings!

It's September!!

While it may still feel like summer, fall starts tomorrow! By the time this issue of the Digest reaches your inbox, you are probably already settled into the new school year. Year 4 of the grant has just begun and already the GEAR UP team has hit the ground running! We are ready for an exciting, fun-filled, helpful, informative, and successful year! Check out some of the GEAR UP fun below!

GEAR UP Students in College!

Although it is still early in the semester, early reports indicate that there are over 400 GEAR UP students in our NSHE institutions as college freshman! Considering the last two years have been mired with COVID concerns and enrollment numbers nationwide are down, this is a great outcome!

NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs

September 2022

The NSHE Team is excited to announce the schedule for the upcoming NSHE College and Scholarship Fairs to be held at each GEAR UP high school during National GEAR UP Week. The fairs will include the seven NSHE institutions as well as tables on various scholarship programs such as the Promise, PEF, and Millennium to name a few. These events we be held on the following dates:

Mineral County HS: Tuesday, September 20th
Clark HS: Tuesday, September 27th
Pahrump Valley HS: Wednesday, September 28th
Bonanza HS: Thursday, September 29th
Durango HS: Friday, September 30th

Most of the events will be held during the lunch periods. This is a great opportunity for students to ask questions and find out information about the various colleges and scholarship programs. In addition, staff from Paradigm Shift may be joining in on the fun!

GEAR UP West Conference

October 23-25

Most of the GEAR UP Nevada staff will be heading to Salt Lake City for the annual GEAR UP West conference coming up in October. GEAR UP West is always a great conference! We look forward to meeting our colleagues and learning new ways to serve our students!! Early registration (until October 8th) is open: https://www.uvu.edu/gearup/gearup-west-2022/index.html

NCCEP Capacity Building Workshop

February 5-8, 2023

We are looking forward to the next NCCEP conference, the Capacity Building Workshop. We are also excited to hear about where it will be held. This event will be held February 5-8, 2023. Registration will open in November. Stayed tuned for more information as it becomes available.

School Kick Offs A Success!!

The first two weeks of the new grant year were busy, busy, busy! Each GEAR UP school held their Kick Off events, in many cases, there were multiple offerings. Students were introduced to GEAR UP and the many services it offers. These exciting sessions, hosted by Student Success Agency were designed to not only raise awareness of our program but to build enthusiasm amongst students and staff. Thank you to our staff and our colleagues at SSA for hosting these events! See below for some fun photos!

NSHE Team Building Day!

The NSHE Team held their first Team Building Day while all the staff was in Reno for the NDE training. Staff from the south had to fly up for the NDE training so the Team Building Day was planned adjacent to the training. We had a session on creative ways to collect data with Sarah from NDE; Tawnie from WNC led us in a very interesting session on Transformation of Relationships which was combining her recent training in social-emotional learning and yoga/movement; we revealed the results of a recent Team Appreciation Exercise; and we ended the day with a tour of the UNR campus! Thank you to the whole team for showing up and participating! Special thank you to Sarah and Tawnie for leading their specific sessions and for Emilly Borthwick-Wong, PI at UNR for leading the campus tour!

First You Haf-ta FAFSA!

NDE held their fall training day in August. A huge part of the NDE Training Day was an in-depth session on completing the FAFSA and the assorted questions staff may encounter while holding a FAFSA completion event. Kierstan DuFour from Get2College in Mississippi joined us in person to lead this training session. The whole team had to complete prerequisite training before the in-person session too.

Many of our staff will be able to put their training to good use as the FAFSA for the 23-24 academic year will be released on October 1st. We already have several FAFSA Nights scheduled to assist students and their families in completing this process!

So Long Amanda!!

We have to say good-bye, so long, farewell to Amanda Annan, our Research Administrator at the NSHE EPSCoR Office. Amanda managed all the fiscal processing and reporting for the overall NSHE GEAR UP subaward. Amanda is moving to California to take on a new role in Clinical Administration. This is Amanda's field of study so it is a good move for her.

Lot's of luck in your new role, Amanda! We will miss you!!
