President's Message
Nicholas W. Bennett, MAI
Over the past year, I was honored to be president of the Nevada chapter of the Appraisal Institute. When I was asked to serve again in 2023, I did not hesitate. That is based on the support, service and assistance from my fellow members. The past year was served with great pride and I hope we have moved forward in a positive direction. I would also like to thank my fellow officers and board members for their confidence in me and their expertise and knowledge in the coming year.
I’d also like to take a moment to loudly cheer Tina Anderson. She is the backbone of our chapter and her daily efforts often go unnoticed. However, she deserves to be lauded for herculean tasks she performs for us on a daily basis to keep the Nevada and Washington Idaho Montana chapters running smoothly. It is a pleasure to work with her and makes all of our lives much easier. As I said last year, I am truly honored to work beside her throughout the year.
Let’s recap last year: We held our first in-person USPAP class since COVID and it was well attended. The biggest news was the return of the Las Vegas Market Symposium. After two years, it was wonderful to see everyone in person again. The cherry on top was we had near record attendance and shattered our sponsorship goals! And just last month, we had the 2023 Symposium. It was great to see everyone and we once again broke our sponsorship numbers!
We also held the Northern Nevada Real Estate Overview in October of last year. I was honored to host the mic for the event. Due to the incredible team work of the NNVREO Planning Committee: Dan Brauning, SRA, AI-RRS, Bruce Hahn, MAI, SRA, Julie Ott, MAI, Ben Gregg, MAI and Sarah Fye, this program was a huge success!
Finally, we also had one of our best luncheons with the new director and associate professor of the Lied Center for Real Estate at UNLV, Dr. Shawn McCoy. I can’t remember another meeting that was more engaging!
I’d like to take this time for a brief update on the plans I outlined last year. As chapter president, I represent the Appraisal Institute on the Commercial Alliance Las Vegas (CALV) board. Last year we joined with the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth for a beautification project.

What started as a small project rehabilitating one residence has grown due to the commercial real estate communities overwhelming support.
NPHY has an Amazon Wishlist (https://a.co/a8XT3T5) that goes directly to assist these young people and make their transition most comfortable. For more information about NPHY, visit https://nphy.org/.
One goal during my presidency is to establish a relationship between the Nevada Chapter and the Lied Center for Real Estate at UNLV. I’d like to announce the formation of the NVAI UNLV Outreach subcommittee. Joining me on this subcommittee is Bart Bowers, MAI, Terry Farr, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, CCIM, and Brenda Cazares. A special thanks to Dr. McCoy for helping facilitate this joining of the minds. With our first meeting in early January, I’m very excited to strengthen our relationship, increase awareness to students, and introduce the world of appraisal to the nation’s most diverse student population.
It is through this partnership that I was exposed to the Lied Mentorship Program at UNLV. I was paired up with a senior in the program and it was a rewarding experience sharing the details of our profession. I have signed up to be a mentor for the spring semester and encourage anyone interested to reach out to myself or Paul Chaffee at the Lied Center for more information.
One issue that we are encountering in our profession is a shortage. With the industry as a whole seeing a shrinking workforce, several opportunities are available. If you are looking for an intern, please let us know! We can post on our website your contact information.
Our local chapter is only as successful as we make it. Volunteering your time and effort by members helps our chapter grow and succeed. Please considering serving on one of our boards or committees, service is what makes us strong. The list of committees with openings are listed below in the newsletter.
As we enter into the new year, my hope is that our chapter finds the best ways to serve its members. We can grow stronger, closer and be ready to meet the challenges of appraising in today’s world. I want to thank all the members who graciously give their time to this chapter. I look forward to serving as your 2023 Nevada Chapter President.
