NVCT NEWS

Celebrating our Land Conservation Champions!

Last month, we held our first-ever Champions event, combining our landowner and Great Blue Heron appreciation events. We gathered at our Piney Run easement to honor these conservation champions, connect them with fellow supporters, and enjoy a guided nature hike through the property!

Both Great Blue Herons and Landowners commit to conservation, whether through annual support for NVCT or by dedicating their land to conservation. Our conservation champions make our work possible and elevate its impact through their consistent devotion to protecting nearby nature. We appreciate everyone who is a part of these groups and hope all those who attended felt that sentiment that day. Thank you!

End the Year by Making a Lasting Impact in Northern Virginia

This year, give where you live! Your donation will support volunteer events, community outreach, invasive species removals, tree plantings, park cleanups, and, most importantly, our core land protection work. Please join us and support the land trust working for you and Northern Virginia!

When the Climate Shifts, Invasives Move In

Climate change is intensifying the spread and impact of invasive species across Northern Virginia. Longer warm seasons, heavier rainfall, and more frequent storms create ideal conditions for invasive species to outcompete native species and disrupt ecosystems. From spotted lanternflies to aggressive invasive plants, these species weaken the landscapes that help buffer our communities from climate extremes.

Lore of the Land

Preserving Place, Honoring Community

After a tragic explosion claimed the life of firefighter Trevor Brown, neighbors Cheryl and Steve Honard made a deeply personal decision to ensure the site would become something meaningful for their community. Rather than see the corner lot redeveloped, they purchased the property and transformed it into a memorial park—a place for healing, remembrance, and connection.

Today, the park features benches, pathways, native plantings, and a memorial honoring Trevor’s service and sacrifice. Read more to find out how this park came to be and how it has already begun to heal the community!

2025 Land Wrap Up

How is the year wrapping up for NVCT? Read more to find out!

In this wrap-up, we highlight the properties whose stories represent the diversity in landscapes we protect and the unique individuals we work with to make conservation happen!

For us, every year is a record-breaking one because we make new connections with partners and landowners, and, of course, add more acres of NVCT-protected land. Every acre counts toward our more than 9,000 acres of NVCT protected land in Northern Virginia (9,138 to be exact!).

Conservationists of Color

Conservationists of Color is back!

Join fellow conservation enthusiasts as we read, listen, and learn about the people of color who opened the door for others.

The accomplishments of people of color in conservation have historically been overlooked, and this event aims to create a space to celebrate and honor their contributions. This is an opportunity to come together for conservation and create a space that recognizes everyone's role in it! We hope to see you there!

Virginia Pine

Virginia is home to its own version of a Christmas tree, the Virginia pine! This small evergreen makes a great tabletop or mini Christmas tree. The needles of this pine come in bundles of two and are relatively short (1–3 inches).

This pine is often referred to as a “pioneer species” because it’s one of the first trees to move into disturbed or open areas, helping stabilize the soil and pave the way for other plants to follow.
