What a joyful occasion we had on January 28th at Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria for our second annual Conservationists of Color event, just in time to kick off Black History Month! It was an absolute blast, and we're so grateful for the fantastic turnout, with special guests like Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson and former Mayor Allison Silberberg joining us.

We had a great time celebrating the vibrant and diverse voices within the conservation community. Huge thanks to our partners at Port City Brewing Company for helping make this day so memorable! Cheers to many more celebrations of diversity and conservation ahead!

Annual Great Blue Heron Nest Count

On January 26th, we once again collaborated with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Stafford County to conduct an annual Great Blue Heron nest count at the Potomac Creek Heronry within Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve. This year, a total of 212 nests were tallied, marking an increase of 32 nests compared to 2023. The resiliency of the herons to come back after difficult years marked by severe weather events is inspiring, and this heron preserve continues to be one of our region's most important nesting sites.

In partnership with Stafford County and DCR, we remain committed to expanding land protection and enhancing this critical heronry into the future.
