NVD Fall Newsletter
Personalized, Prepared, Confident
November 2015
Dear Parents, Faculty and Staff,

Thank you for your support during the opening of the 2015-2016 school year.  As discussed at Back to School Night, we have many exciting things happening at Northern Valley Demarest (NVD),  including, but not limited to:

1:1 Laptop Teaching and Learning Initiative   - The program has exceeded all expectations.  The students appear to be more engaged and our teachers have been working tirelessly to prepare lessons. We are redefining the way we view education.  This year, we have dedicated all of our Professional Learning Community time towards 1:1 professional development in an effort to provide our teachers with all the tools they may need.

Academic Performance - NVD had 62 students recognized as AP Scholars from the 2015 AP Test Administration. Our PSAT and SAT scores remain among the highest in the state as evidenced by our National Merit Semi-finalist and 24 Commended students.  Our students continue to gain admissions to the colleges and universities of their choice.

Assessment - In the spring 2015 Principal's Newsletter and in our Back to School Newsletter, we communicated guidelines for posting grades and providing feedback to students.  We continue to work on strengthening assessment literacy of teachers, staff, students, parents and community by conducting analysis of our summative assessments and developing an assessment guidebook designed for all stakeholders.  We are also closely monitoring the unit assessment pilot program being conducted in our History department.

Advance Placement Program - With the scheduling season right around the corner, we want to remind everyone about the adjustments made to the AP program.  Effective for 2015-2016, the AP exam is optional for the 8 open enrollment courses:  Art History, Computer Science A, English Language and Composition, European History, Studio Art, Statistics, US Government and Politics, and World History.  Every student taking at least one AP course must sit for a minimum of one exam, even if this is an open-enrollment course.  All AP students will take a summative assessment as part of the final course grade to provide data and meaningful feedback in order to evaluate the program.  New courses include AP Computer Science A for 2015-2016, as well as AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Environmental Science, AP Computer Science Principles and AP Economics for 2016-2017.

Writing and Math Centers - We are proud of the efforts made by our teachers to assist students with mathematics and writing. Students can sign up for math outside of H205 and B122 for English help during lunch.  We also have National Honor Society tutoring available in G221 during lunch for all subjects.

We thank the Board of Education and Dr. Gordon for supporting these efforts and our students.  We look forward to our continued partnership with our parents in teaching life skills to our students.   Please take some time to read this newsletter as it highlights many of the great things our students and staff have accomplished.

Sincerely,
James M. Santana
Principal

This image depicts an innocent girl who has experienced pain and torture that no one deserves.  The tears portay sorrow and pain that will forever remain in her memory.  The pins illustrate both the physical and emotional pain she has endured.  She was treated as an animal, a tool used for her enemy's greed.  Despite the suffering she had to undergo, there are butterflies to represent the hope for freedom beyond the barbed wires holding her in.
