September 2025 Update

 Loudoun Chamber's Policy Maker Series

On September 3rd, the Loudoun Chamber’s 2025 State of Transportation address brought together top regional leaders to share key insights on mobility, infrastructure and what’s next for Northern Virginia. Phyllis Randall, Chair, NVTA and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, provided a keynote speech, and Monica Backmon, CEO, NVTA, joined a panel discussion about the county's and region's transportation priorities and future challenges.

 Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Events

In August, NVTA was proud to host the Atlanta Regional Commission's Leadership Involvement Networking Knowledge (LINK) Lab at our offices. Monica Backmon, NVTA CEO, moderated a panel discussion with Phyllis Randall, Chair, NVTA and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, and Jeff C. McKay, Chairman, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Authority member, discussing the vision, leadership, funding, community engagement and governance required to advance NVTA's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Action Plan and other transportation projects.

Additionally, Ms. Backmon participated in a separate panel alongside Anna Roach, Executive Director and CEO, Atlanta Regional Commission; Clark Mercer, Executive Director, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments; and Bob Lazzaro, Former Executive Director, Northern Virginia Regional Commission. They discussed the Capital Region’s key public policy issues, distinctive regional assets, and perspectives on regional growth, highlighting similarities and differences between NoVA and metro Atlanta. The conversation also focused on coordination across multiple jurisdictions, including strategies for successful collaboration and the challenges that can arise.

Thank you to the Atlanta Regional Commission for joining us in Northern Virginia!👏

 APTA Transform Conference

On September 16th, Ms. Backmon moderated a panel during the APTA Transform Conference in Boston titled What I Wish I Knew Before Stepping Into the C-Suite. Ms. Backmon led a candid discussion on the challenges and rewards of leadership in the transportation industry, with panelists sharing strategies that work and sometimes don’t, offering practical lessons for current and future leaders.
