R2D2 Makes an appearance at Spencer Elementary
Torrey Proctor, STEM teacher at Spencer Community School District, shared with elementary students the functioning R2D2 robot that he built from scratch.  The robot was constructed from wood, plastic,  motors, gears, LED lights, and and metal parts.  It weighs about 100 lbs and took about 11 months to build. R2D2 makes sounds, lights up, plays music and dances, moves and spins all controlled with a game controller.  Proctor encourages students to be makers and they too can make robots or anything they want, it just takes passion and perseverance.  Build on Mr. Proctor!!
Sioux Central Showcases Their STEM Club
Teachers, Troy Thams and Craig Cadman, shared with NW STEM their STEM camp that 4th and 5th grade students take part in.  Every Monday after school, 27 students participate in the camp.  Each month, the camp is given a new theme or project to work on.  Currently, they are working on building rockets to be launched at their track and field day in May.  Materials for the camp are donated from area businesses including the Ag Partnership Fund. The teachers are so impressed with the commitment from these students and their parents to be a part of this club. Way to go Sioux Central!! Thank you for sharing your story with us!
Energy Festival at 185th Air Refueling Wing
On April 11, 2019, NW STEM partnered with the 185th Air Refueling Wing and Jordan Menning, Northwest AEA to host an energy festival.  High school students from area schools joined in on the fun and exploration of building gliders, launching them, and redesigning them for better performance and distance.  With the helpful guidance of the 185th pilots, students were given some helpful advice about engineering the best gliders.  Students also tested their turbines in a wind tunnel.
Rocket Manufacturing - Education + Business Partnerships
On April 16, 2019, NW STEM Advisory Board held their monthly meeting at Rock Valley High School and toured Rocket Manufacturing, a STEM BEST program since 2014. Students work with area businesses and community partners to create products including welding, laser cutting, and construction.  Students also participate in marketing, accounting, and advertising their business.  Students are learning highly employable skills, especially in the Rock Valley area. The program is seeing growth, expansion and development. The sky is the limit for Rocket Manufacturing!
