NW STEM Advisory Board Tours Cherokee
On August 23, the NW STEM Advisory Board toured the Sanford Museum and Planetarium and the Foundation Analytic Laboratory in Cherokee. We were amazed again to find that NW Iowa has such wonderful organizations and businesses. Both businesses shared with us their current partnerships with area school as well as exploring more avenues for partnerships.
The Museum and Planetarium has many local prehistoric artifacts and fossils in their  Archaeology vs. Paleontology exhibit. the Planetarium takes viewers on trips to space, local attractions, and even inside the human body.
The Analytic lab performs chemical and microbiological analysis testing on samples brought in by businesses and private citizens. Some of their customers are biofuel plants and animal feed. The lab is looking to expand and move into a larger facility next year.
STEM Day at the Iowa State Fair
On August 19, the Governor's STEM Council entertained and informed fair-goers at the Iowa State Fair.  Iowa Lakes Community College SERT department had an interactive exhibit and Mark Zababwa, instructor at ILCC and NW STEM board member, amazed a crowd of children with making snow in August! Governor Kim Reynolds spoke to the crowd about the great strides Iowa has made in the STEM initiative as well as the I.O.W.A. STEM Teacher Award opening the application process.
NW STEM at Iowa Lakes
Back to School Bash!
On August 22, NW STEM had a booth at the annual Iowa Lakes Back to School Bash in Estherville.  Around 1,000 children, parents, and community members visited the event.  NW STEM exhibited the Ramps and Pathways Scale-Up Program and a project dealing with circuits.  It was a great night of fun and excitement gearing up for another school year.
