Have you responded to the 2020 Census?

Responding to the 2020 Census is underway! Households have received their invitations to respond by phone, mail, or for the first time - online.

As of April 8, Oklahoma had a response rate of 41.4% compared to the national average of 46.2%.

In Northwest Oklahoma, response rates are average around 27.1%.

Top 3 Counties:

Garfield - 47.3%
Kay - 46.1%
Major - 40.4%

Bottom 3 Counties:

Cimarron - 6.9%
Harper - 11.6%
Beaver - 12.2%

Now, more than ever it is important that Northwest Oklahoma has a complete count. Census data provides funding that supports our hospitals, schools, fire departments, police departments, human services, and roads.

It will take a group effort to help spread the word about the importance of the Census. After you fill out your survey, please encourage your friends, family members, and co-workers to do the same!

Census and COVID-19

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the U.S. Census Bureau has modified their operations for the safety of all individuals. Enumerators are now scheduled to follow up with households that have not responded starting May 28.

To help this effort it is important to encourage individuals to complete the Census online.

Your Information is Protected

By law, all Census responses are private and cannot be shared with the FBI, CIA, ICE, IRS or any other agency that isn't the Census Bureau.

You do not have to be a U.S. Citizen to participate.

Benefits of a Complete Count

A complete count of every person living in the United States has tremendous benefits for you and for your customers and employees.

Census data:

• Provide the basis for distributing grants for economic development and inform business decisions, such as local business expansion.

• Create projections of growth and help you identify prime locations to open new operations or shut old ones.

• Help business owners enhance hiring practices and identify skilled workers.

• Offer valuable information on your customer base, including income levels, household size, and homeownership, which can further inform business strategies such as pricing and locations.

• Determine how much funding your community receives and its representation in government.

Avoiding Fraud and Scams

Phishing is a criminal act in which someone tries to get your information by pretending to be an entity that you trust. Phishing emails often direct you to a website that looks real but is fake—and may be infected with malware.

It is important to know that the Census Bureau will not send unsolicited emails to request your participation in the 2020 Census. Further, during the 2020 Census, the Census Bureau will never ask for:

Your Social Security number.
Your bank account or credit card numbers.
Anything on behalf of a political party.
Money or donations.

In addition, the Census Bureau will not contact you on behalf of a political party.

Staying Safe at Home

If someone visits your home to collect a response for the 2020 Census, you can do the following to verify their identity:

First, check to make sure that they have a valid ID badge, with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.
If you still have questions about their identity, you can call 844-330-2020 to speak with a Census Bureau representative.

Reporting Suspected Fraud

If you suspect fraud, call 844-330-2020 to speak with a Census Bureau representative. If it is determined that the visitor who came to your door does not work for the Census Bureau, contact your local police department.
