Let us Pray Without Ceasing

The NW Washington Synod is joining the Minneapolis Area Synod and others across the ELCA in becoming a “Pray Without Ceasing” community. As people who follow Jesus, we pray. Alone and together, we pray. And, in times of great change, we pray.

We can agree that 2025 has begun as a time of significant change, particularly in our federal government. Whether we agree or disagree with the changes, the very speed of the actions gives us pause. And so, we pray...

There’s nothing complicated or demanding about this initiative. Simply make a commitment as a congregation to do two things:

  • Gather for prayer in community (live, virtual, or hybrid) once each week.
  • Invite other congregations to join you in doing the same.

Many congregations are meeting at 5 p.m. (local time) on Sundays to pray together, but you can do it in whatever way and at whatever time meets your situation best - in person, online... Don’t overthink it, just pray without ceasing.

God of life and breath, you are our source of hope:

+ We give thanks for your gifts of life and love;

+ remind us who and whose we are - we are your beloved children;

+ remind us to breathe and settle into your peace;

+ sustain us when we are feeling weary, broken, lost, or afraid;

+ reform in us what needs reforming;

+ open our hearts and minds to hear your word and call;

+ inspire us to take action to seek justice for our neighbors;

+ grant us wisdom, courage, and creativity to be and share your Good News in the midst of anxious and frightening days.

We pray for your world and your people:

+ for your beautiful creation - guide us to be better caretakers;

+ for those who have been targeted and live in fear because of racism, homophobia, transphobia, and sexism;

+ for those who are unemployed, under-employed, or concerned their job is at risk;

+ for those whose benefits are being threatened;

+ for those who are unhoused - and those whose living situation is unstable;

+ for those living in or fleeing from areas impacted by violence - we pray for lasting peace between nations and for the healing of people who suffer conflict - in so many areas of our world, country and communities;

+ for those who have been affected by storms and disasters and for those who work to protect, respond, and help with recovery.

We pray for all who are grieving:

+ Gracious God, wrap your arms of love and hope around all who are experiencing any kind of loss, disconnection, or brokenness;

+ We lift up the family of Pastor Jim Jaeger who died on April 1. WE give thanks for Pastor Jim's service in a number of ministries in the northwest, including Prince of Peace, Seattle and Seattle Children's Hospital. Surround his family with your peace and hope. (Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7 at 2pm at Christ Lutheran Church - 2501 SW 320th St. Federal Way.)

+ We hold the family of Rev. Jack Hustad (retired), following his death on February 15. (Cards of care may be sent to his son, the Rev. Mikkel Hustad, 6470 South Humphrey Road, Clinton, WA 98236. His memorial service sill be held on Sunday, June 15 at 2pm First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach in Shoreline)

We pray for all who are in need of healing and strength:

+ We pray for those who are facing ongoing health concerns: Abi (daughter of Rev. Eric Griffith), Rev. Ron Melver, Rev. Marjorie Lorant, Rev. Pam Miles, Rev. Don Cornell, Rev. Dick Wendt, Rev. Deb Butler, Rev. Carol Jensen, Rev. Don Maier, and Nancy Davis (widow of Rev. Chuck Davis).

+ We pray for those who are awaiting diagnoses and treatment plans. Grant them peace and courage. Remind them that they are not alone.

+ We lift up those who are taking time away for rest and renewal - may those on vacation or sabbatical find renewal in their travels, re-connections, rest and learning. We lift up Synod Staff member Rev. David Hahn who will be on sabbatical until August 20.

We pray for your church:

+ From our prayer calendar, we pray for these ministries and their rostered leaders:

-- for Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center in Bellingham as they welcome their summer staff this weekend - bless them in their preparations for welcoming, supporting, and sharing your love with campers throughout the summer;

-- for First Lutheran Church (Bothell) and for their pastor: Rev. Tor Berg;

-- for St. Luke's Lutheran Church (Bellevue) and their pastor: Rev. Dr. Mark Griffith;

-- for our siblings in the Oregon Synod as they gather this weekend in assembly - and select a person to serve as bishop for the next six years;

-- for our Companion Synod: The Evangelical Lutheran Church in European Russia;

-- the people and ministries of the Southeastern Synod and their bishop, the Rev. Kevin Strickland (reelected this last weekend to serve a second term.)

-- the North/West Lower Michigan Synod and their current bishop, the Rev. Dr. Craig Satterlee, and their bishop-elect, the Rev. Julie Schneider-Thomas.

+ We give thanks for the many years of service of our retired pastors & deacons. Thanks be to God for the ways you continue to support ministers and ministries in your settled communities. This week we celebrate these retired ministers: Deacon Carolee Grumm, Rev. Stephen Grumm, and Rev. Anne Hall.

+ We pray for ministries and leaders in transition.

-- we pray for the leaders who are guiding ministries in a time of transition: legacy planning teams, transition teams, call committees, transition ministers, care pastors, congregational staff and lay leaders, and our synod staff;

-- we pray for Rev. Ryan Marsh and the congregation of Salt House in Kirkland as they share their final Sunday together - be their guide as they enter this new season. Bless Pastor Ryan and his family as they begin a new chapter in Arizona;

-- we pray for our neighboring synods - Montana and Oregon - as they elected bishops this last weekend. We hold Bishop Laurie Larson Caesar and the Oregon Synod in prayer following her reelection. We hold Bishop Laurie Jungling, Bishop-Elect Ben Quanbeck, and the Montana Synod in prayer as they prepare for a new season of leadership.

-- we pray for all who are in discernment and/or awaiting call.

May our prayers rise before you as incense.

+ Your mercy is everlasting and your faithfulness endures from age to age;

+ Sustain, uplift, and encourage us as we live into your calling;

+ Trusting in your mercy and grace, we lift our prayers to you.

Amen.
