LEADING EDGE: Business Planning for Startups

This newly-designed LEADING EDGE: Business Planning for Startups course has been curated with Western Slope entrepreneurs in mind. The program is conducted online and features eight on-demand learning modules paired with live weekly forums hosted by expert SBDC consultants. During the 8-week series aspiring rural business owners assess the viability of their startup ideas and learn what it takes to succeed. They’ll refine their business models and complete their experience with a strategic business plan to secure financing and guide their business ventures.


LEADING EDGE: Access to Capital

Led by Northwest SBDC consultant and former banker, Lisa Woods, LEADING EDGE: Access to Capital is a six-week program with in-depth finance education modules paired with weekly small group discussion sessions and one-on-one consulting. Participants learn to identify and calculate their capital needs, assess their cash flow, create and use financial documents, find funding sources, and prepare for a loan application or funding pitch.

Federal Opportunities


HUD Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing Grant Program

Deadline: Oct. 15 | Details here. This funding opportunity will provide $100 million in funding for communities across the country to identify and remove barriers to housing production and preservation.


EDA Build to Scale Program

Deadline: Oct. 28 | Details here. The program aims to increase the capacity of entrepreneurs in regions to demonstrate, deploy, and deliver new technologies by starting and growing new companies and creating and sustaining new, good jobs.


EPA Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Grant

Deadline: Nov. 14 | Details here. Grants offered by the Brownfields Program may be used to address sites contaminated by hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants (including hazardous substances co-mingled with petroleum), and petroleum.


FEMA National Resilience Guidance

Details here | FEMA has recently announced the release of the National Resilience Guidance (NRG). The NRG offers a unifying vision of resilience and the principles and steps all communities and organizations can take to increase their resilience in every sector and discipline. U.S. Department of Energy Clean Energy in Rural Areas Grants

NOFA anticipated release date Fall 2024 | Details here. Funding to spur innovative, community-focused clean energy solutions in rural and remote areas across the United States. Overseen by the Energy Improvements in Rural and Remote Areas (ERA) program, the anticipated funding plans to support energy technologies that provide clean, resilient, reliable, affordable power, while also aiming to increase local economic development. 


Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) Grant

Deadline: Oct. 28 | Details here. Colorado Energy Office. The federal BEAD Program will invest $826.5 million into Colorado’s broadband infrastructure and connect unserved and underserved homes and businesses.


Raise Grant Program

Deadline: Jan. 13, 2025 | Details here. The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE Discretionary Grant program, provides a unique opportunity for the Department of Transportation to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve national objectives.


Watersmart Small-Scale Efficiency Projects

Details here. The WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Projects provides 50/50 cost share funding to entities with water or power delivery authority for small water efficiency improvements that have been identified through previous planning efforts. Projects eligible for funding include installation of flow measurement or automation in a specific part of a water delivery system, lining of a section of a canal to address seepage, or other similar projects that are limited in scope.


Community Facilities Direct

Details here. This program provides affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. Funds can be used to purchase, construct, or improve municipal buildings, public safety facilities, museums,libraries, food pantries, child care centers, and more. Rural areas including cities and towns with no more than 20,000 residents are eligible for this program.


Community Change Grants

Deadline: November 21 | Details here. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This funding is for environmental and climate justice activities to benefit disadvantaged communities through projects that reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, and build community capacity to address environmental and climate justice challenges. These place-based investments will be focused on community-driven initiatives to be responsive to community and stakeholder input.


Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas Funding

NOFA to be released soon | Details here. U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) for up to $400 million to spur innovative, community-focused clean energy solutions in rural and remote areas across the United States. The anticipated funding plans to support energy technologies that provide clean, resilient, reliable, affordable power, while also aiming to increase local economic development.

Forest Restoration & Wildfire Risk Mitigation Grant Program

Deadline: October 10 | Details here. The Forest Restoration & Wildfire Risk Mitigation Grant Program supports community-level actions to reduce the risk of wildfire, promote forest health and forest restoration, and encourage the use of woody material.


Community Accelerated Mobility Project (CAMP) Grant Program

Deadline: October 8 | Details here. Through the Community Access Enterprise (CAE) and the Colorado Energy Office (CEO), the Community Accelerated Mobility Project (CAMP) grant program provides funding for community-driven projects with an electric mobility component.


Colorado Grid Resilience Grant Programs

Details here. The U.S. Department of Energy Grid Deployment Office has formally awarded the Colorado Energy Office and Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) electric grid resilience formula funding totaling $25.6 million to date. This federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) will support three grant programs and one study focused on preventing outages and enhancing the resilience of the energy grid.
