A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear NWSMTA members,

Correction without saying "no

or "but." Effective teaching extends beyond imparting knowledge and skill; it involves nurturing a supportive environment where students feel encouraged to grow. For music teachers, providing corrective feedback to students is an essential aspect of the teaching process. However, the way feedback is delivered can greatly influence a student's motivation and self-esteem.

I thought that I had mastered the skill to deliver encouraging comments to my students until a lesson with a young girl who was about 9 years old. As usual, I praised her playing first. Instead of feeling pleased, she said to me, pouting, that I was going to tell her “But” afterwards. Here is another example of how I failed to correct in a non-confronting method. A 5-year-old boy who loved to play piano, got very anxious whenever he heard me saying “No”, even like “don’t touch the air purifier.” He would shut down and play poorly. These were some of the awakening moments for me to seek better ways to give encouraging feedback.

Luckily, there are many resources; observing other teachers’ teaching and training for me regarding this aspect of my teaching. I have applied some of them in my lessons. Patiently listen to the whole song without interrupting or making comments until the end. Try to limit the correction to one point each song. Of course, it depends on the age pf the child and the length of the song. Asking questions to promote self-discovery can motivate the students to realize their own mistakes and maybe even find a different way to play a certain passage. Here is my favorite one. Without saying a word about the mistake, just smile and demonstrate the correct way and let the students discover for themselves.

I am certain that there are many other strategies to deliver encouraging feedback. I am still learning so that I can effectively provide corrective feedback in a positive and constructive manner. In hope that I can nurture not only the knowledge and skill, but the love and confidence to play the music. Would you like to share your thoughts on this subject with our group and me? Maybe we can have coffee and pastries over our conversations?

The AIM committee has worked hard to provide a positive and smooth experience for both teachers and students. Please let the chairpersons know how much you appreciate them and maybe join their workforce. Thanks to Helen Grosshans and Vonnie Mrozinski for hosting the AIM Level 3-9 Performance Exam in March.

Please join me for the April meeting in Rolling Meadows Library. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

CLASSICAL RECITAL DEADLINE AND SUBMISSIONS

Dear NWSMTA members,

This is a reminder that the submissions for the Classical Recital are due April 14.

Please send them to Yoko Amano at yoko.amano@yahoo.com.

This is a change to what is printed in the yearbook.

Due to a change in work and personal circumstances, I will not be in the Chicago area to chair the Classical Recital during the two weeks prior to and including the date of the scheduled recital.

Rather than try to move the date for submissions earlier, Yoko Amano, the former Classical Recital Chair has graciously offered to take over the duties for the April Recital.

Thank you, Yoko!

Sincerely,

Lois Guderian

APRIL PROGRAM - DR. JEFF KLEINSORGE: "HOW TO TREAT A FIVE-YEAR-OLD AS A PIANIST RATHER THAN AS A STUDENT"

What if I were to treat a beginning pianist – from the very first lesson – not as a student, but as a pianist? That thought experiment changed the nature of my teaching. The result was a novel sound-before-symbol approach that emphasizes artistic interpretation, sight reading, playing by ear, and an especially heavy emphasis on technique, while slipping in strong doses of ear training and paving the way for important theory follow-ups. It creates independent and informed learners who are capable of polished, gold-medal performances. The presentation will lay out the lesson structure, and then deep-dive into several levels of detail on each of the items: interpretation, sight reading, etc. Examples will come mostly from the first two years of lessons, since these – in the right hands – lay the foundation for everything a pianist will ever do. We’ll nonetheless make important excursions into upper levels, through advanced high school, to see this lesson strategy’s end game.

Dr. Jeff Kleinsorge is the Director of the Preparatory and Community Music Program at Concordia University Chicago, where he also teaches Piano Pedagogy and Keyboard Skills. He spends his summers as a member of the Piano Faculty at the Interlochen Arts Camp. He blends his eclectic academic background in performance, pedagogy, and composition into a unique approach to teaching that produces informed, creative, expressive, and accomplished pianists. Dr. Kleinsorge is currently the president of ISMTA.

OAKTON SIX PIANO ENSEMBLE

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear NWSMTA members,

It is not too late. You can still participate in NWSMTA’s upcoming programs. We have a program planned for you this coming Monday. Jeff Kleinsorge, President of ISMTA, will present his own way to develop students from five years to advanced high school musicians. A fantastic opportunity to pick up some new ideas to incorporate into your own teaching.

April 28th, students are welcome to perform in a joint NWSMTA recital. It will be held at St. Michael’s in Barrington. There’s room for a large audience, great acoustics and a fantastic instrument. You are always invited to attend.

The May luncheon is the place to be. Friends and colleagues have so much to talk about and share. It is time to take a moment to enjoy yourself.

All that Jazz will be coming up on Fathers’ Day. Get your students ready to hit the stage under the lights with a pro jazz ensemble to back them up. Whatever their level, they will remember their first gig forever.

MTNA has an archived treasure available. And it is free to members! Webinars have been saved and catalogued for you to watch at your convenience. They date back to 2015. To check it out, go to MTNA.org and log in.
