A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Dear NWSMTA members,

You have probably met many people telling you how much they enjoyed music once they found out that you were a music teacher. No doubt, some shared fond memories of studying and performing music while others shared regrets, wishing they had practiced and continued their music lessons when they were young.

A few years ago, I had a chance to start taking piano lessons again. It’s been a great privilege to study under Dr. Janice Razaq at Harper College. At the end of each semester, I even get to perform my pieces alongside other students at the “Adult Student Musicale”.  These “adult students” aged from their 20s to 80s are mostly not music majors, but instead come from various educational and professional backgrounds. However, there is one thing in common among us - the love for learning piano playing. Over these past few years, I have witnessed the fun that everyone shared and the progress everyone made. It’s such a joy learning to make music with them.

As music educators, we hope to provide our students with an exciting and memorable learning experience. To ensure our successful teaching, we should continue to explore, discover, and find fresh new ideas ourselves. Like living water, our teaching will be alive and fresh and exciting when we continue to discover and develop.

NWSMTA is a place where we can explore new ideas together. Our monthly program provides an opportunity to enhance old ideas and discover new ones. We can also learn from each other by working and serving together. Please consider coming to the monthly meetings and programs. Please also consider joining a committee and serving together with other wonderful members.

CLASSICAL RECITAL DEADLINE AND SUBMISSIONS

Dear NWSMTA members,

This is a reminder that the submissions for the Classical Recital are due April 14.

Please send them to Yoko Amano at yoko.amano@yahoo.com.

This is a change to what is printed in the yearbook.

Due to a change in work and personal circumstances, I will not be in the Chicago area to chair the Classical Recital during the two weeks prior to and including the date of the scheduled recital.

Rather than try to move the date for submissions earlier, Yoko Amano, the former Classical Recital Chair has graciously offered to take over the duties for the April Recital.

Thank you, Yoko!

Sincerely,

Lois Guderian

A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear NWSMTA members,

I have something you are going to enjoy this month. A fabulous book that was written for musicians by a musician. The author, Brendan Slocumb, is a violinist and teacher. His first book was The Violin Conspiracy. It was a thrilling book, but his book The Secret Symphony will amaze you on many levels. Both books are expected to be made into movies. Although, the movie cannot possibly match what the book offers.

It takes place in two time periods. Bern, a music professor from North Carolina is chosen to do musicological research on a previously lost opera written by the most famous American composer from the 20th century. Bern and his gifted technology expert friend, Eboni, work together to unravel a secret that unfolds about the piece and the composer. We also follow the composer and the unique woman, Josephine, who had rare gifts and challenges of her own. Slocumb is incredible at developing his characters. You will care about them and recognize the struggles in their lives. We all have our own journey with music, but it is fascinating to see how it has changed through the years.

Slocumb wrote about experiencing music in his novel so well, you will feel the different beats of multiple jazz forms, the raw sweat of dancing to it and the wonder of having it take over your whole being. Slocumb said in an interview that a musician’s instrument is an extension of himself.

Slocumb's book also contains a compelling storyline. Caught in a trap, Bern and Eboni fight a powerful force in search of the truth. I don't want to give away the story, so I will stop here.

Just one more thing before I quit. I will say their game of "search for the perfect New York pizza" made me want to get on a plane to check out New York’s pizzerias. I think there were several times I could taste the sauce and cheese, hear the crispy crunch of the crust and smell the Italian fragrances in the restaurant. I also imagined the taste of the wine.
