Dear NWSMTA members,
Pass the Baton
Once a parent shared with me that her son enjoyed piano lessons so much that he wanted to become a piano teacher one day. I was overjoyed upon hearing that student’s declaration. As a music educator, besides fostering the love for music, knowledge and skills in my students, I also desire to see some of them who can take the baton and pass on what they have learned to the next generation.
As I recall my own path to becoming a music educator, I am reminded that in addition to what I have learned from the classroom, much of my teaching skills were formed during private piano lessons. It makes me realize that whatever I do in each lesson may become a blueprint or foundation for a future music teacher. It makes me feel excited and more mindful of what I do or say in each lesson. Did I set a good example of being a good teacher? Did I respect my students and their parents and communicate well with them? Was I encouraging to them? Was I clear and firm about what I teach? How do I help them discover the joy of learning and performing? Did I cover most of the material that they need to learn? To model being a good teacher is not just a transfer of knowledge but a continuation of a legacy—a commitment to fostering creativity, expression, and excellence in music education for generations to come.
Talking about the passing the baton, it has been almost two years since I took on the position as NWSMTA president. At the end of this two-year term, it will be time for me to pass the baton to our next president. With great joy, I am glad to announce that NWSMTA has elected our next president, Lois Veenhoven Guderian. We are looking forward to her leadership.
It has been a humbling experience for me the last two years. I can honestly say that I would not have been able to accomplish anything without so many people’s help and encouragement. Hopefully, we will do the same for Lois, our next President, working alongside her, offering her encouragement and experience. NWSMTA has also elected our next 1st vice president, Justyna Weirich, and the recording secretary, Helen Chang. Thank you all for stepping up to serve our group.
With heartfelt gratitude, I want to thank all board members who have served our group and made it and our events wonderful. I also want to thank those who agreed to take on committee positions. With all these wonderful members, our group will continue to shine.
Chyi-Ling Evans
President, NWSMTA
