CISA Region 10 is hosting a Protecting Houses of Worship Resources Webinar to enhance participant’s understanding of CISA resources that assist houses of worship in securing physical and cyber infrastructure and to provide an overview of the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).

Topics for discussion and information sharing will include physical security and cybersecurity considerations as well as CISA guidance and resources to inform Faith-Based Organizations (FBO)-Houses of Worship (HOW) security-based decisions (a guide, a self-assessment tool, trainings, exercises, and other materials focused on a wide range of man-made threats) that could be used against the FBO-HOW community.

Given the rise of hate crimes, this may be especially relevant for those who may be targeted because of day cares, those that have a robust LGBTQ+ ministries, or those hospitable to immigrants.

Survey for those who handle money/finances

A doctoral candidate at William Howard Taft University is conducting research for their dissertation, “Evaluating the Efficacy of Internal Control Policies in Preventing and Reporting Fraud and Embezzlement in Churches.” They are seeking participants from various regions nationwide to address this pressing issue. If you are involved or have direct oversight of church finances, please consider adding your voice to this survey. The QR code on the pic included here will take eligible participants directly to the survey.

An ELCA Survey for Rostered Ministers Regarding Educational Debt:

The burden of educational debt has had a profound impact on many rostered ministers in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. At its spring 2022 meeting, the Executive Committee of the ELCA Church Council approved the formation of a task force to study the issue and shape recommendations for providing relief to as many pastors and deacons as possible. One of the first steps in this work is to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how educational debt is impacting our leaders, their families, their call processes, and their ministry.

We’d like to hear from you. All rostered ministers, active and retired, are invited to participate in this survey. Even if you no longer carry or have never carried educational debt, we want to hear your experiences and perspective.

Take the 10-minute survey HERE by February 9th.

Annual Congregation Report

Each year, every congregation, synod-authorized worshiping community (SAWC) and new start is asked by our partners at ELCA Churchwide to provide information about its people, finances, and resources through the Annual Congregation Report.

This provides the churchwide organization and synods with a record of the congregations and worshiping communities that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO TAKE TIME TO COMPLETE THIS FORM.

Now is a great time to gather the info needed - as many of our congregations are preparing for annual meetings and reports... All ELCA congregations, SAWCs and new starts should now have received the 2023 Annual Congregation Report packet through the mail. If your congregation or worshiping community would like to begin compiling information for the report before receiving the packet, electronic versions of Form A and several supporting documents are available below. A set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) will help you navigate the process. The online system is open now!

Author Event: Go and Do Likewise: Following Jesus into our Common Humanity, with Pastor Terry Kyllo

Thursday, February 1, 6:30pm-8pm

at Burlington Lutheran Church, 134 E Victoria Ave, Burlington

Seven in ten Americans feel the nation is dangerously divided. We are living in bubbles, isolated from people of other perspectives, traditions, and cultures. We are also dangerously unequal. Many people do not have equal access to opportunities to care for their family and community. We know we are walking on a dangerous road, but what can we do? In conversation with leaders of many traditions, Pastor Terry Kyllo of Paths to Understanding realized we can all make a difference when we know, work with, and honor people of diverse traditions and cultures.

But many Christians are hesitant to relate to people of other traditions as many have been taught:

·      Christianity is the only way to God

·      Christianity is God’s only way to us

On his own journey as a follower of Jesus, Terry slowly realized that Jesus taught no such thing. He writes: “I was born into White Christian Supremacy. But I was not born for it. You weren’t either. The Creator has more beautiful ways for us to live and is restoring what was taken from us. Jesus invites his followers to take the long, painful, joyous, and healing journey of daily baptism to find our identity among all the Creator’s children, all made in God’s image.”

Join us for a conversation with the author at Burlington Lutheran Church.

Rest & Renewal Retreat:

Ministering in an Age of Mental Health

Saturday, February 3rd, 9am-3pm

at Our Saviors Lutheran, Everett

We are noticing the burden of mental health overwhelming many of those in our churches and broader communities. How are we being called to respond to these instances where and when we notice them? As lay leaders called to care for the children, youth and adults in our congregations, how are we navigating this important dynamic?

The retreat will provide space for learning, reflection, and embodied practices to accompany all of us who are working toward wellness in ourselves, our communities of faith, and the world. How is the Spirit calling us, and those we we minister alongside of, to wholistic healing for the body, mind and spirit? After all, we know that caring for ourselves holistically, allows us to better care for others.

Hear from various leaders and practitioners in this field, including:

  • Certified Mental Health Therapist, Justus D'Addario - has worked in community mental health for five years and has been in private practice for 13 years (Renton Family Therapy). He specializes in attachment and Lifespan Integration. He has been meditating and practicing tai chi for over two decades and attends St Matthews Lutheran, Renton.
  • Certified Mental Health Therapist, Ruth Foster Koth - a Clinical Social Worker in the University of Washington Medical Center system. She counsels patients in coping with chronic illness, emotional eating and managing complex medical systems. In her private practice, she cherishes walking alongside clients as they improve their mental health. She attends Faith Lutheran, Seattle.
  • Rev Kacey Hahn - Pastor at St Matthews, Renton, Kacey will present "Spirituality of Body & Breath."
  • Rev. Shannyn Fuerst - Pastor of Faith Lutheran, Seattle, Shannyn will address "Spirituality of Health & Wellness."
