Potluck for Democracy

As division, fear, and conflict continue to grow in our communities, nation, and world, Paths to Understanding (PTU) and the Seattle University Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement (CEIE) are partnering to create the “Potluck for Democracy.” With a toolkit and supporting resources, we want to provide everything you need to gather people to share a simple meal with the primary goal of building relationships that foster hope for and belief in our common humanity.

75% of the nation is worried about the future of our democracy. Over 50% of Americans are lonely. Many groups are isolated from other groups.

People don’t know each other and often hear only negative things about each other. We don’t recognize the good hearts and good deeds of our neighbors because we don’t know each other.

It is time to change that. But what do we do?

Churches, mosques, temples, community groups, service clubs, book clubs, and quilting groups are in every neighborhood and community in our nation. We have the power to come together across lines of difference to see each other as human, to reduce the loneliness and isolation we are suffering from. We have the power to gather over a meal, get to know each other better, and strengthen our democracy.

Download your toolkit today! pathstounderstanding.org/potluck

We have the power to meet this moment, together!

Sincerely,

Paths to Understanding

Donations Needed from NWWA Synod for Disaster Relief Kits - to be created at the ELCA Youth Gathering

In the aftermath of a storm, hurricane, or tornado, New Orleans residents regularly find themselves without electricity. This quickly becomes a health crisis as people try to manage life in the hot, humid Gulf Coast summers. City leaders and community organizers identified the eight most-requested items to help residents as they wait for the power grid to be restored.

One of the goals of the Gathering is to create 3,000 disaster relief kits filled with these items to help New Orleanians get through the days immediately following a natural disaster.

It takes about $100 to create an entire disaster relief kit. Each region is asked to bring a different item to build our kits and Regions One and Two have been asked to bring small personal fans (AA battery powered). Another region is assigned the batteries, so we just need to provide the fans!

Here is where we need your help….. It's a COMPETITION... which region will be able to bring the most items to #ELCAYG2024 to donate to our neighbors in New Orleans in preparation for the next disaster?

I’m thinking Region 1 can win, but we are going to need your help to do it!

Not going to the gathering? Your participants won’t have extra space in your suitcase? Shop through our Amazon and Target wish lists and have your items sent directly to our partners in the Big Easy.

More information (and the link to the wish lists) is online at https://www.elca.church/gathering/about/offering.

(NOTE: those who may have trouble hearing, are invited to sit in rows closest to the front, while they navigate a sound issue)

FAN Spring Summits - online

Sunday, June 9, 3:00-4:30pm

FAN staff are moving into what we call our Spring Outreach season, where we get to be present at your community gatherings and denominational conferences, and talk with you about what happened this legislative session. Most importantly, we seek to hear your concerns and priorities for what we might do together in the months ahead.

Essential to this outreach is our annual Spring Summits, which we have one more coming up on June 9, 3:00-4:30pm. We’ve opted to host these summits online to allow more people to join and to enable advocates from across the state to hear from each other. During this year’s summits, we’ll be able to celebrate legislative wins and hear about stalled legislation and what is needed to move forward next session. FAN staff will share an update on the three ballot initiatives that will have an impact on everything we do this year. And you will have a chance to meet in issue groups to discuss with others what policy changes you would like to see in the future.

Your voices matter to us! Last year, many attendees expressed concerns for young people and mental health—we heard you and worked with NAMI this year to advocate for some important bills that passed!

Register at the June 9 links or learn more on our Spring Summit page, link, and bring your voice and your advocacy to the FAN table!
