Advocacy Updates
NYAIL joined a statewide coalition in celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act and other anniversaries of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The theme was “Keep Them Strong, Make Them Better, & Pass Them Along!" A celebration of these vital programs and advocating for federal representatives to preserve, protect, and improve them.

Senator Schumer joined as the opening speaker and Senator Gillibrand provided a video message. Cliff Perez of Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley co-hosted the event with Maria Alvarez Executive Director of StateWide Senior Action Council. The event was organized by Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, StateWide Senior Action Council, Medicaid Matters, New York Association on Independent Living, New York State Alliance for Retired Americans, Metro New York Health Care for All Campaign, and Citizen Action of New York.

ADA 31
Independent Living Centers across New York celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Celebrations included virtual, hybrid, and in-person events that demonstrated the ongoing commitment to advancing the ADA in New York State and celebrating what we all have accomplished so far. We encourage everyone to celebrate, advocate, and be engaged with your local ILC. Below is a small sample of ADA event videos.

The New York Association on Independent Living administers several statewide and regional programs in collaboration with its member ILCs, all of which are focused on helping people with disabilities live independently in the community.
